NORSU HEALTH ADVISORY FOR COVID-19

1 | TITLE
(Coronavirus Disease 2019 Prevention/ 2nd Edition: August 2020)
How to Protect Yourself and Others
As of August 2020, there are currently no vaccines available and no proven antiviral
drugs to protect us against COVID-19. However, we may be able to reduce possible risk of its
infection by doing the following:
1. Wash your hands anytime as needed with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. You
can also use a hand sanitizer or an alcohol with 70% solution antiseptic disinfectant if
soap and water are not available.
2. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
3. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing (a cough
etiquette), then throw the tissue into the trash bin. Do not forget to wash your hands
after.
4. Use face mask while in public areas. This face mask has to be used when we feel sick
with fever, cough, colds, sore throat and other respiratory symptoms. The use of face
shield is recommended as an additional protection.
5. Clean and disinfect objects and surfaces using alcohol with 70% solution antiseptic
disinfectant or 0.5% chlorine solution (DOH: 900ml water mixed with 100ml bleach or
90ml water and mixed with 10ml bleach) Note: Chlorine solution is not recommended for
misting and spraying as well as hand washing or for any skin contact. Wiping objects
with cloth for disinfection is recommended by the Department of Health (DOH).
6. Maintain social distancing especially in public areas by observing 1 meter space (DOH
Recommendation) apart from each other (front and back) to comply with the social
distancing protocol.
7. Avoid handshaking, touching, hugging, kissing or any form of physical contact. These
are definitely discouraged.
8. Avoid unnecessary travel.
9. Postpone mass gathering to curb the spread of the virus. It is suggested strongly that
you follow the recommendations of the DOH/Local Government with the number of
people allowed to gather following social distancing.
10. Without proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), avoid close contact with sick
people.
11. Seek advice and get proper assessment from City Health doctors/Hospitals or any
equipped and accepting physician if you have fever, cough, colds, sore throat, difficulty
breathing, and any respiratory illness.
12. Be aware that OFWs and LSIs are subjected to fourteen (14) Days self-quarantine with
proper coordination with the Inter Agency Task Force (IATF)/City Health or Barangay
Health Unit starting from the date of arrival in this province/country for proper guidance
and assessment.
13. Seek advice from the Inter Agency Task Force (IATF)/City Health or Barangay Health
Unit if you have possible exposure to a probable or confirmed COVID-19 patient.
14. Be aware that a “No Smoking” health advice is encouraged because smokers are more
vulnerable to COVID-19 infection as it increases the chance for bilateral viral pneumonia
in which 25% of them have been admitted to ICU (Intensive Care Unit) needing
mechanical ventilation or, worst, they could die once infected with COVID-19 based on
recent studies.
15. Drink enough water and eat healthy foods like fruits and vegetables.
16. Cook food thoroughly.
17. Wash spoon, fork, and other eating utensils properly.
18. Avoid close contact with sick or dead farm/wild animals. Avoiding contact with live wild
animals is also recommended (e.g., bats, snakes, etc.).
19. Try not to worry too much if you are not truly at risk.
20. Stop posting or sharing false/fake news as well as inaccurate information that may lead
to panic and undue distress.
21. Pray always for each other, for our families and friends as well as for our community,
country, and loved ones. Seek divine protection from Him against this COVID-19
pandemic.

Discussion:

1 | TITLE
The term entrepreneurship is derived from a French word ‘Entreprendre’ which means ‘to
undertake’, ‘to pursue opportunities’, or ‘to fulfill needs and wants through innovation and
starring businesses’. The word first appeared in the French dictionary in 1723.

It is believed that the Irish Banker operating in France, Ricardo Cantillon (Kent, 1984) was the
first person who used the word ‘entreprendre’ in economics as “an agent who assembles
material/inputs for producing goods at a specific price and through coordination of those inputs
produces goods whose sales price is uncertain in comparison with production cost”.

It is also believed that the Frenchman J.B. Say (1824) first used the term ‘entrepreneur’ as an
economic agent who brought together the factors of production in such a way that new wealth
can be created.

Oxford English dictionary adopted the word ‘entreprendre’ as “entrepreneur” in 1897 and meant;
“director or manager of a public musical institution; one who gets up entertainments, especially
musical performance”.

Webster’s Third New International Dictionary (1961) takes it as; ‘an organizer of an economic
venture, especially one who organizes, owns, manages, and assumes the risk of a business’.

The Oxford English dictionary has revised the meaning of entrepreneur in / 1933 and meant ‘a
contractor acting as an intermediary between capital and labor”.

Today, entrepreneurship is used with different meanings such as innovating, risk-bearing,

adventurism, wealth creation, thrill-seeking, etc.

The term ‘entrepreneurship’ was defined as follows:

1. “Entrepreneurship entails bearing the risk of buying at a certain price and selling at
uncertain prices.”- Ricardo Cantillon.
2. “Entrepreneurship is any kind of innovative function that could have a bearing on the
welfare of an entrepreneur.”-Joseph A. Schumpeter (1934).
3. “Entrepreneurship is that form of social decision making performed by economic
innovators.” -Robert K. Lamb (1952).
4. “Entrepreneurship is the purposeful activity of an individual or a group of associated
individuals, undertaken to initiate, maintain or aggrandize profit by production or
distribution of economic goods and services.” – A.H.Cole (1959).
5. “Entrepreneurship is the dynamic process of creating incremental wealth.” – Robert C.
Ronstadt (1984)
6. “Entrepreneurship is the process of creating something new with value by devoting the
necessary time and effort, assuming the accompanying financial, psychic and social risks
and receiving the resulting rewards of monetary and personal satisfaction and
independence.”

The concept of Entrepreneurship has gone through evolution or process that commenced with
providing service in a feudalistic society. Even in its early beginnings or inception, there was no

1 | TITLE
indication that Entrepreneurship or Entrepreneurism was not purely a business activity with
profit as the primary motive or purpose.

There are two basic elements involved in entrepreneurship. Let us understand what these two
terms mean.

1. Innovation

Innovation, i.e., doing something new or something different is a necessary condition to be called
a person as an entrepreneur.

2. Risk-Bearing

Starting a new enterprise always involves risk and trying to do something new and different is
also risky.

An entrepreneur is an innovator or developer who recognizes and seizes opportunities;

converts those opportunities into workable/marketable ideas; adds value through time, effort,
money, or skills; assumes the risks of the competitive marketplace to implement these ideas; and
realizes the rewards from these efforts.

Albert Shapero pointed out that entrepreneurship is a dynamic process of innovation and
new- venture creation through five major dimensions – individuals, organization, environment,
process and institutions. It also includes the following characteristics of an entrepreneur:

l. Personal initiative

2. The ability to consolidate resources

3. Management skills

4. A tendency toward autonomy and risk taking

5. Competitive

6. Goal-oriented behavior

7. Aggressiveness

8. Ability to employ human relations skills

Entrepreneurs serve as agents for change, provide creative, innovative ideas for business
enterprise, and help businesses grow and become profitable.

Moreover, an entrepreneur is an inventor and developer of ideas, change agent, creative,

persistent, and a class of his own having his own value system. Entrepreneurship is now

1 | TITLE
prevalent in various professions from education, engineering, law, and other areas of orientation,
including those who never had any formal schooling in business education. Further
characterization of Entrepreneurship is that it is an approach and a dynamic process. The
approach of an entrepreneur is focused on growth and expansion orientation. As a dynamic
process, an entrepreneur goes through a stage that is nurtured by his immediate environment and
the kind of scenarios and experiences he has gone through. Entrepreneurship is a culture that is
not a fad, but a very promising career option than can prepare a person for a prosperous future
and a nation that is progressive and prosperous as well.

Suggested Learning Activities/Exercises:

Activity No. 1: Characteristics of an entrepreneur

After discussing the characteristics of an entrepreneur, consider which of those

characteristics might describe you. Think about how you may have demonstrated some of the
entrepreneurial characteristics through your schoolwork, extracurricular activities, or part-time
job. Record your personal entrepreneurial characteristics in the table below.

Personal Entrepreneurial Characteristics

In our first semester in second-year level we had a project where we make a floating
tea cup. Our teacher let us decide on how we design our project, what I did was I thought of
an idea of fast food. So, I plan everything on how I will make my project by improvising
some stuff so I can visually see what the outcome of it. Upon making this project there were
many things that I didn’t expect to happen, like the yarn that represent the spaghetti fell of
and the roll newspaper that present as meat ball did not look like it. So, I start over again in
making the spaghetti and meat ball and painted them and it turn out to look like a real
spaghetti. I can say that I have the personal initiative one of the characteristics of an
entrepreneur because I was able to make my project even though at first try was a failure.
Every time I make my project, I always have a plan on how to build them, I list all the
materials that I needed and the procedure on how to make. In making them I always in
counter failing at first try but that failure turns to opportunity in reversing some stuff so I can
enhance and beautify my project so it will look more beautiful.

Practice Task/Assessment:
I. Read each statement carefully and identify the correct answer. Write your
answer on the space provided.

II. In your own understanding, explain Entrepreneurship a process and approach.

Every skill has its process on how to master it same as entrepreneurship it also has a
process. In starting a business, you must have your own idea and initiative. We may
copy or do what the other business men did. It is normal to observe the success of
some business men as your guide in pursuing your business. Since business especially
a big one is not just a joke, if you will not study well on it, it may result to bankruptcy
or failure. One of the most important things in business is to have a feasibility study
before starting a business.

Assignment:
In a one whole sheet of paper or in the space provided answer the following questions.

1. Why do you think we have to study Entrepreneurship?

There are times that we inherit the skill from our ancestors, but if we are willing to learn
any skill can be mastered. We live in the world were abundant information is everywhere
we can find it through the book, internet, scroll, artifacts and just by asking someone.
Here we lived in the world were things always changing and uncertain that’s is why it
important for us to learn and study entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship serves as an
excellent foundation for the types of creative, innovative ideas we need to succeed.
Studying entrepreneurship benefits student and learners from different social and
economic background because it teaches them to cultivate unique skills and think outside
the box. It creates opportunities, instill skill, confidence and knowledge to come up with
business ideas and develop their own venture. Helping them to learn about core business
areas such as finance, sales, marketing, management and accounting, not to mention,
broader ranging skills such as adaptability, effective communication, and confidence.
2. What traits make someone a good entrepreneur?
Passion – They are successful because they love what they do. These entrepreneurs put all
the extra hours they have into the business to make it successful and flourish
Determination – from failure is not a loss to them but an opportunity in being open to fresh
new ideas that can help their company rise to success even though approaching to success
comes from failure.
High openness – always open to new ideas and technique
Moderate agreeableness
Creativity - They usually come up with the solutions of these problems that are a
combination of other things.
Competitiveness – never settle for less always seek for what is the best for the company.

3. Do you agree on this statement. “Entrepreneurs are Made Not Born”. Defend your
answer.
1 | TITLE
Many people have question what’s behind the success of an entrepreneur, whether you are born
to become an entrepreneur or disposition comes from your environment, conditioning or other
external influences. What ever it is, as long as you have enough practice, experience and
conditioning can help you become successful.

Abundant of resources is around us, all we have to do is to do our part. In gathering all the
information and learn from it. In starting a business, it always starts from the bottom where we
question the what, who, how, when. We question what do people need and what kind of
prototype do they need to help them from their troubles. From there we do some research,
interview, survey and gathering data. From our research we now know on what are the solution
on how we can help our people.

Upon the process of making and starting a business we met struggle in achieving our goal.
Behind those struggle we in counter failure same as those successful entrepreneurs they also
experience that. What comes from failure is opportunity, and that opportunity comes an idea on
how to improve our product. With that said “entrepreneur are made not born” I agree on it since
it is within us on how we approach or handle situation cause everything can be learn but for us to
become successful we must do our part to help ourselves in achieving our goal.

EDUCATION IS THE BEST WEAPON
