RATIONALE FOR SBA

The SBA is designed to give students the opportunity to demonstrate, on a timely basis, their ability to solve problems
using computer applications such as:

Database Management
Spreadsheet
Word Processing & Web Page Design
Programming Language

Students must ensure they have the necessary backups of their work as this will alleviate any undue delay of submission
caused by malfunctioning thumb drives, hard drives, etc. A good backup is for students to email their work to themselves
periodically.

The SBA project is marked out of 85 and is worth 25% of your final CXC-CSEC examination grade.
The 85 marks will be distributed as follows:
Word-Processing (20 marks)
Web Page Design (10 marks)
Spreadsheets (20 marks)
Database Management (20 marks)
Problem-Solving (15 marks)

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT

Carnival has long been a traditional cultural festival in several Caribbean territories. Every year, thousands of costumed
masqueraders parade through the streets, dancing to the pulsating sounds of steel band, calypso and soca. Most of these
revellers register to participate in the band of their choice months before the festivities begin. Organizers of these bands
must utilize management and organizational skills in order to stage a successful event.

As a bandleader of one these carnival bands, you are required to utilize suitable Word-processing, spreadsheet, database
management as well as a programming application to design and implement computer-based solutions to the tasks
involved in the management of your carnival band.

|2
SPREADSHEET (Due: September 30,2021)
Email to: [email protected]

The financial records of the band are maintained using a spreadsheet application. The names of the Masqueraders are
listed by section. Both men as well as women may register to play in each section. There are five (5) sections in the band.
The cost of costumes is quoted in US dollars. The cost by section is $560, $620, $680, $750 and $825 respectively.
Masqueraders are given the option of paying for the costume in three equal installments or paying the full cost in one
payment. Not all masqueraders have paid all their installments. Single full payment attracts a discount of 10% while
payment by installments attracts an interest of 15%. The band must register between twenty-five (25) and fifty (50)
masqueraders.

Each masquerader also pays an ‘Inclusive’ fee. A $150 Premium Inclusive Fee entitles the masquerader to food, non-
alcoholic drinks and access to portable bathroom facilities during the carnival parade through the streets. However, a
Basic Inclusive Fee of $50.00 entitles the masquerader to portable bathroom facilities and non-alcoholic drinks only.

Expenditure is incurred in the provision of several amenities for masqueraders during the carnival. The bandleader must
supply food, non-alcoholic drinks, portable bathroom facilities, transportation, music, security personnel, and artiste fees.
In addition, the costs of material for the manufacture of costumes as well as labour costs are incurred.

You are required to:

1. Design a worksheet(s) which accepts income and expenditure costs for the band.

a) Your worksheet must record all payments made by masqueraders, (a few persons have only made ONE or
TWO of the required THREE installments on costumes), the total amount paid by each person as well as the
grand total collected must be calculated. Costume payments are made in US dollars. The total payments
made by each person however, must be converted to the equivalent amount in Jamaican Dollars (Use the rate
US$1= JA$128).
b) In an appropriate row, count the number of masqueraders in the section; and calculate the total payment on
costume, Inclusive fees and the total overall payment.
c) The expenditure incurred for each section must also be calculated. Food is $60.00 per person; drink is $40.00
per person; material is $150.00 per person and labour is $75.00 per person. Other services are provided at a
flat rate for the entire band. These are as follows: bathroom- $3000.00; transport $2500.00; music -
$4000.00; security - $1800.00; artiste - $5000.00. Calculate the total expenditure and the profit obtained.
d) Food and drinks are increased by 15% of the starting per person cost for each successive section; material is
increased by 12% of the starting cost for each successive section while labour is increased by 8% of the
starting cost for each successive section.
e) The total cost for each section =( cost of service * the number of masqueraders in the section).

Save your spreadsheet as Masqueraders1.

2. Modify your spreadsheet to effect the following changes:

a) Insert a masquerader before the last person in each of the first three sections.
b) Delete the third masquerader from each of the last two sections.
c) Create a table that shows the total income and total expenditure by sections.
d) The cost of raw materials has decreased. Change the initial cost of raw materials from $150 to $135.
e) Labour costs however, have increased. The starting cost of sewing costumes for the first section is now $95.
f) Due to inflation, it has become necessary to increase the cost of food and drink from 15% to 20%. However,
the first section is spared the price hike.
g) Sort the sections in descending order by Total Amount Paid and Name.
h) Create a pivot table to show the sum of the costumes and the sum of the total amount paid for each section

|3
i) Create a complex criterion to select all information on revellers for section 2 who have paid in full for their
costumes.
j) Create a bar/column chart which compares the income and expenditure of each section.
Give this chart a suitable name.
k) Create a pie chart with appropriate data labels which shows the distribution of expenditure for any ONE
named section.

Save your spreadsheet as Masqueraders2.

DATABASE MANAGEMENT (Due: October 27,2021)

Email to: [email protected]

You should use a suitable application to manage data on persons who have registered to play in your band. Personal data
on each applicant, such as name, sex, address, age, size and telephone contact must be stored. Masqueraders’ payment
data must also be stored. The cost of costumes varies by section. Costume prices range from US$160 to US$425. In
addition, the section of the band in which they choose to play must be recorded. The band has five named sections. Each
section has a specific four-digit section code. Your database should contain three tables. Using data from your
spreadsheet populate your database with data on at least twenty-five but no more than fifty persons.

Personal Data Bands Income

MasqueraderID Section Code MasqueraderID/
/Registration # Registration #
FName Section Costume Price
LName Costume Price Payment Status

You should test your database by performing queries to show:

Queries
1. The name, age, size and address of all persons registered to play in a named section. Name this query Qry1Section.
2. The ID Number, name, sex and age of all female masqueraders between twenty and thirty years old. Name this query
Qry2TwentiesLadies.
3. The bandleader has experienced difficulty in securing the advertising material for the costumes in the third section.
He has therefore decided to give a 15% rebate on the total payments made to all persons in this section. Calculate this
rebate and show it along with the name, address, and total payment of all persons in one named section. Name this
query Qry3Rebate.
4. As an incentive to attract more female masqueraders to his band, the bandleader has decided to give a gift voucher to
the value of 12% of the total payments to all females registered in the band. Show the name, sex, total payment and
voucher value for all female revellers. Name this query Qry4GiftVoucher.
5. Two revellers have asked to be refunded their payments, as they were forced to travel prior to the date of the carnival.
Delete all records that pertain to these two named persons. Name this DeleteQry.

Report
6. Generate a report that shows the names, ID Number, section, age and total payments for all revellers who have paid in
Full for their costumes. The report should be grouped by section and sorted in descending order by Last name then by
First name. The report should calculate and show the total amount of funds paid by the revellers of each section. The
|4
grand total of payments made should be generated as well. This report should be given a suitable title utilizing two
lines as follows:
Name of Band
Paid in Full
Forms
7. Create a form to display information about each reveller

WORDPROCESSING (Due: November 17,2021)

Document 1
a) Create an advertisement brochure for a local newspaper that informs the public about your carnival band. It is of
immense importance that your brochure be professional-looking and appealing to the prospective customers. This
must be designed on letter size paper using landscape orientation and 0.5” margins. Use different font styles and
sizes wherever is appropriate in your design of your advertisement.

Document 2
b) Using a suitable feature of your word-processing application
i. Create a document which should be mailed persons to persons who have paid in full for their costumes.
The document should inform masqueraders of the parade route, the time of assembly and departure of the
band onto the parade.
ii. Design a suitable letterhead for your document which should be placed in a header and a suitable footer
must be inserted, with the words center aligned.
iii. The report from the database should be inserted into your document.
iv. The final paragraph should express the bandleader’s gratitude to the masqueraders for choosing to join his
band for the carnival celebrations.
v. The left margin must be 1.5”
vi. Ensure that your documents have been spell-checked and is suitable for sending to the various
individuals.

WEB PAGE DESIGN (Due: December 3,2021)
Email to: [email protected]

A web page should be created using a word processor or a free online web service.

|5
The web page should contain at minimum:

a) the band’s logo

b) display information about the band
c) defined areas on the page for navigational links and content
d) at minimum two hyperlinks of the following:

 link to a location within the web page

 link to an email address
 link to another web page (which may or may not exist)
 link to user-created files

Students can insert screenshots or create the design of the web page in a word-processed document.
Alternatively, they can use the last page in their word-processed document to paste the link to the online web
page. Only the candidate number placed near the top of the page should be used as a form of identification for
the web page.

PROBLEM-SOLVING (Due: December 15,2021)

Email to: [email protected]

1. Using information from the spreadsheet, students should provide a statement of the problem.

2. Develop a pseudocode algorithm that accepts as input the names of masqueraders who have paid the full cost of
their costume and the amount each paid. A masquerader may have paid for a costume in any of the FIVE sections
in the band. The algorithm should also determine the number of masqueraders who have paid for costumes in
each section. The names of persons and the section for which they have paid should be printed. A listing of
section and the total number of persons registered to play in each section should also be printed, along with the
money paid in each section.

3. Trace Table - Using sample data from your spreadsheet make a random listing of persons who have paid in full
for their costumes. No more than ten (10) persons should be selected. This listing should contain the IDNumber
and the full amount paid by each masquerader for his/her costume. Using this listing, design a trace table that
traces the number of masqueraders in each section, the amount paid, and traces the total amount collected in each
section.

The trace table is also to be used as test data for the program implementation. Students are required to supply
the test data that produced the output. This information will be necessary to determine whether the tasks have
been performed correctly.

PROGRAM IMPLEMENTATION

4. Using the programming language Pascal, write program code to implement the algorithm above. Students are
required to submit screenshots of working program showing data entry and results produced using the trace
table above.
