13 Essentials of Optimum Combustion

This document outlines 13 essentials for optimal combustion in a furnace. They include having an oxidizing furnace exit around 3%, balancing fuel lines to burners within 2-5% accuracy, ensuring fuel line particles are less than 0.1% at 50 mesh, accurately controlling primary and overfire airflows within 3%, maintaining minimum fuel line velocities of 3,300 fpm, and keeping mechanical tolerances of burners and dampers within 1/4 inch. It also recommends secondary air distribution be within 5-10% and fuel feed to pulverizers be smooth and accurately measured and controlled.

3. Fuel lines balanced by “Dirty Air” test, using a Dirty Air Velocity
Probe, to ±5% or better.
4. Fuel lines balanced in fuel flow to ±10% or better.

12. Fuel feed to the pulverizers should be smooth during load changes and
measured and controlled as accurately as possible. Load cell equipped
gravimetric feeders are preferred.

13. Fuel feed quality and size should be consistent. Consistent raw coal
sizing of feed to pulverizers is a good start.
