Problem 3 & 4

1) The document describes how to calculate the velocity and discharge of flow in a circular sewer with a diameter of 1 m laid at a gradient of 1 in 400. 2) Given a depth of flow (h) of 0.6 m, the proportionate depth and velocity are calculated using Manning's formula. 3) The proportionate velocity is calculated to be 1.077 times the velocity calculated by Manning's formula, which is 1.65 m/s. Therefore, the velocity of flow is 1.77 m/s. 4) The proportionate discharge is calculated to be 0.6711 times the actual discharge. With an actual discharge of 1.295 m3/s, the

Design a standard egg-shaped sewer to carry a discharge of 1.

60 m 3 per second
with a velocity of flow 1 metre per second.
Solution:
Q =A. V
where Q = discharge in m 3 per second
= 1.60 m3 per second
A = area of a standard egg-shaped section
= 4.64D2 = 1.15 D2
v = velocity of flow in metre per second
= 1 metre per second.
Assume, sewer runs 80% full
Substituting, 1.60 = 1.15 D2 X 1 X 1 ii
D2 = 1.739
D = 1.3188, say 1.40 m ........ . .. . .... Ans.
Depth of sewer = 1.5 D
= 1.5 X 1.4

Standard egg-shaped sewer

Calculate velocity of flow and corresponding discharge i a circular sewer having
a diameter of I m laid at a gradient I in 400. The sewer is running at 6.0 m
depth. Take N = 0.012 in Manning's formula.
Solution:
As sewer is running at 0.6 m depth,
h = 0.6 m,
D = 1.0 m
... h = 0.6
