1. Find the extreme values (absolute and local) of the function 𝑦 = 𝑥 3 + 𝑥 2 − 8𝑥 +


5 over its natural domain, and where they occur.
2. The sum of two non negative numbers is 20. Find the numbers
(i) if the product of one number and the square root of the other is to be as large as
possible.
(ii) if one number plus the square root of the other is to be as large as possible.
3. 𝑦 ′ = 𝑥 𝟐 − 𝑥 − 6 gives the first derivative of a function. At what point, if any, does the
graph of function have local maximum, local minimum or inflection point?
4. Determine that constant a and b in order that function 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 3 + 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐
has relative minima at 𝑥 = 4 and a point of inflection at 𝑥 = 1.
5. Give the intervals where the given functions are increasing and decreasing
(i) 𝑓(𝑥) = (𝑥 2 − 3𝑥)/(𝑥 + 1)
(ii) 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 𝑒 −3𝑥
(iii) 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 3 − 𝑥
(iv) 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥𝑙𝑜𝑔𝑥
6. Find the volume generated by revolving the given region about the given axis
(a) The region bounded by 𝑦 = 𝑥 4 , 𝑥 = 1 and 𝑦 = 0 about Y axis.
(b) The region in the first quadrant bounded by 𝑥 = 𝑦 − 𝑦 3 , 𝑥 = 1 and 𝑦 = 1 about X
axis.
7. Find the area enclosed by the line y  x 1 and the parabola y 2  2 x  6 .
8. Find the limit of 𝑓 as (𝑥, 𝑦) → (0,0) or show that the limit does not exist for the
following functions
