A few of the most common faults include:

 causing the ball to touch the ground outside the opponents' court or without first passing over
the net;
 catching and throwing the ball;
 double hit: two consecutive contacts with the ball made by the same player;
 four consecutive contacts with the ball made by the same team.
 net foul: touching the net during play.

Libero is a defensive player who can replace any player in back row.

Origin : In 1895, in  Massachusetts (USA), William G. Morgan created a new game


called Mintonette as a pastime to be played preferably indoors and by any number of players. The
game took some of its characteristics from tennis and handball.

An international federation, the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB), was founded in 1947,


and the first World Championships were held in 1949 for men and 1952 for women. [7] The sport is now
popular in Brazil, in Europe (where especially Italy, the Netherlands, and countries from Eastern
Europe have been major forces since the late 1980s), in Russia, and in other countries including
China and the rest of Asia, as well as in the United States.

Volleyball is one of top 5 sports gloablly.

Since 1996, both men's and women's events count twelve participant nations. Each of the five
continental volleyball confederations has at least one affiliated national federation involved in the
Olympic Games.

USA is the winner of 2008 olympics in men, Brazil in women.

Both beach and indoor volleyball played in olympics.


Height : at the top of the net is 2.43 meters (7 feet 11 5/8 inches) above the center of the court for
men's competition, and 2.24 meters (7 feet 4 1/8 inches) for women's competition.

ball must be spherical, made of leather or synthetic leather, have a circumference of 65–67 cm, a
weight of 260–280 g and an inside pressure of 0.30–0.325 kg/cm2.

Japan has won gold many times .

2010 : japan won gold. Iran silver and south korea bronze. Dominated by japan, china and south
korea over the years.

Woman Asian games volleyball

Started in 1962.
China, s Korea and Japan has dominated the event.

2010: china was gold medallist, S Korea silver, Kazakhstan bronze.

Volleyball is a optional game at commonwealth games.

It is a popular game which is inexpensive and can be played in all seasons in all parts of the
country - indoor or outdoors to suit the situations and the season.

Popularity of sports depend on the success at international level, some iconic player, number of
people playing the game, media friendliness, financial and other resources.

Which player is most critical according to you?

Setter: backbone of the offense and makes the decisions about who gets the ball when. touches the ball on the second
contact and delivers it to her hitters. She needs to be able to take in a lot of information at once and to make good
decisions in a split second. Consistency here is key.

Problems of volleyball:

widely played at school/ college level and in rural area too. But lack of support system at higher
level; lack of sponsorship; scientific training; awareness of sports need to be increased at all levels.

It is not only volleball which has suffered but other sports have also suffered because of uni
dimensional focus on cricket.

Role of corporate house, media groups, and frequent national level touraments, more recogniton.
Volleyball tournaments at national and international level:

FIVB men and women world championship, Asian championship, National championship at different
levels to be held in 2011.

Volleyball world championship:

Oldest and most imp tournament of volleyball – founded in 1949

24 teams play, most recent champion is Brazil in male and Russia in Female.

Held every 4th yr – after 2 yr of Olympics. Was held in 2010 in Italy.

Semi-finals and finals played according to Olympics format.

Volleyball world cup:

Started in 1965, 12 teams, held ever 4th yr in Japan on permanent basis.

3 Olympic spot selected from this tournament – held 1 yr before Olympics.

Current champion is Brazil in male and Italy in female.

FIVB world league

Founded in 1990. Number of teams – 16, Held every year. Brazil id last year champion.

Richest event of Volleyball.

Women event is called FIVB world grand prix.

- India ranks 44th in Men FIVB ranking, 41st in women


ranking.

Secured 4th rank in u-21 volleyball world
championship held in pune, 2009.
- Brazil is ranked 1 in both male and female group.
