Windows Server 2016

2.1 Windows Server History

Windows Server is a series of Microsoft server operating systems. Windows servers are
more powerful versions of the desktop operating system and are designed to more efficiently
handle corporate networking, internet and intranet hosting, databases and similar functions. A
server Operating System (OS) is specifically designed to run on server hardware. Servers are
specialized in computers that operate with client/server architecture to serve requests of client
computers on the network. The first Windows server OS edition released under that brand was
Windows Server 2003. However, the first server edition of Windows was Windows NT 3.1
Advanced Server, and then followed by Windows NT 3.5 Server, Windows NT 4.0 Server, and
Windows 2000 Server. Moreover, Windows 2000 Server was the first server edition that
includes Active Directory, DNS Server, DHCP Server, Group Policy, as well as many other
popular features used today.
Windows Server 2003 R2 is the update of Windows Server 2003. It is an edition of
Windows NT 5.2 and released on December, 2005. On February 2008, Microsoft released
Windows Server 2008 with Windows NT 6.0 version. Later year, Windows Server 2008 R2
was released with the new version of Windows NT 6.1. In 2012, Windows Server 2012 released
with the version of Windows NT 6.2. Windows Server 2012 updated to Windows Server 2012
R2 with new version of Windows NT 6.3 in 2013.

2.2 Windows Server 2016

Windows Server 2016 is developed as part of the Windows NT family of operating
systems, developed concurrently with Windows 10 (NT 10.0). Windows Server 2016 was
released on September 26, 2016 at Microsoft's Ignite conference and became generally
available on October 12, 2016.
Windows Server 2016 is available in three editions:

2.3 Minimal System Requirements

The following table shows the minimum requirements for Windows Server 2016. The
actual requirements depend on system configuration and installed applications and features.

2.4 Windows Server Installation

Windows Server 2016 has two installation options. These are Windows Server and
Windows Server (Server with Desktop Experience).

1. Windows Server – A Server which is a core OS without local management tools or

local Graphical User Interface (GUI). Administrated remotely using management tools
and PowerShell.
2. Windows Server (Server with Desktop Experience) – A Server which installs with,
management tools, local GUI and the Desktop Experience components giving the same
experience as Windows client.
When you install Windows server 2016 OS on a physical device, plug a boot drive
(DVD or USB) to the computer and boot your computer.

To install a server using Windows server 2016 ISO disc image in a VMware
Workstation Pro by the following steps:

1. Click Power on the virtual machine installed in the previous chapter in the top left.

2. When the virtual machine is powered on, specify the language, time and currency and
keyboard, and then click Next.

3. Click Install now for starting installation.

4. Select one of the following Windows Server editions what you have decided and click
on Next button. Select Windows server 2016 Datacenter (Desktop Experience)
edition in this session.

5. Read the license terms and accept I accept the license terms, then click on the Next
button.

6. Next, select Custom: Install Window only (advanced) for clean installation. Be
careful backup your files before you continue. The custom option can be made changes
to partitions and drives.

7. Select a drive, namely Drive0 Unallocated space to install Windows and click Next.

8. At first, Windows files are copied to the disk. Now is ready for Windows Installation.
It will take a time. When finished, the server will reboot automatically.

9. After the reboot, press Ctrl + Alt + Delete (in Real) or Ctrl + Alt + Insert (In Virtual),
type a password. Now the installation of Windows Server 2016 is successfully
completed.
