MATH 1201 Written Assignment Unit 7

The document contains a written assignment with 3 questions. The first question asks to find the length of an arc subtended by a 50 degree central angle in a circle with a radius of 10 cm. The answer is 8.73 cm. The second question asks to graph two functions on specific intervals and describe how they vary and compare. The third question asks to find the height a 23 ft ladder reaches up a building at an 80 degree angle using trigonometry. The answer is 19.7 ft.

Written Assignment Unit 7

March 18, 2020

Complete the following questions utilizing the concepts introduced in this unit.
1.  Find the length of an arc in a circle of radius 10 centimeters subtended by the central
angle of 50°. Show your work.
Use the formula for the length of the arc of a circle (Abramson, 2017, p. 581):
θ
l= (2 π r)
360 °
θ = the angle subtended at center
2πr = circumference of a circle
Substitute the known values in the circumference:
2πr = 2π(10) = 62.83 cm
Substitute the known values into the length of the arc:
50
l= (62.83)
360 °
50
l= (62.83)
360 °
l=8.73 cm
Answer: The length of the arc is 8.73 cm.

2.  Graph   on [-4π, 4π] and verbalize how the graph varies from the
graphs of  .

Graph    on the window [−5π, 5π] and describe freely what the graph shows.
You can use www.desmos.com/calculator to obtain the graphs.
The graph f(x) = x sin x shows two curved lines on the negative side of the x-axis and two other
curved lines on the positive side of the x-axis. If a line was drawn right along the y-axis on 0,
then you can see that the negative side is flipped to create the positive side. In other words, it
shows a symmetry. The graph of f(x) = ±x shows a linear equation passing through (0,0) and
(1,1). The f(x) = ±x function touches the f(x) = x sin x curves along the positive I quadrant and
negative III quadrant. The farther f(x) = x sin x is from (0,0), the higher the curved lines (or
parabolas) are. The comparison of the two function are shown below:
The graph f(x) = (sin x)/x has bigger and shorter curves as soon as it gets to (0,0). A line can be
drawn along the y-axis, which would show that both sides are symmetrical to each other.
Desmos shows that its highest point is at (0, undefined).

3. A 23-ft ladder leans against a building so that the angle between the ground and the
ladder is 80°. How high does the ladder reach up the side of the building? Show the steps of
your reasoning.
Let h equal the height of the ladder. This means that we can draw a triangle to each of the three
point. The angle where the building starts from the ground is 90°. To find out h, use the rule of
sine to get the value.
h
sin 80 °=
23
h=20(sin 80 ° )
h=20(.9848)
h=19.69
Answer: The ladder reaches up 19.7 ft the side of the building.
