Week 1 Discussion Assignment - Sample

The document discusses Kahneman's theory that human minds process information using two systems - System 1 which is fast, automatic, and emotional, and System 2 which is slow, logical, and effortful. It explains how the two systems interact and sometimes conflict, as System 1 can create biases that System 2 has to override. The conclusion is that while System 2 can catch some errors, constantly using it is impractical, so the best approach is recognizing situations where biases are likely and exerting more conscious effort where stakes are higher.

Week 1 Discussion Assignment

Thesis: “According to Kahneman, we are unable to avoid certain cognitive biases because so
much of our thinking happens automatically in ways that do not activate the logical centers of
our brains” (p.134).
1. The human mind processes information with System 1 and System 2:

 System 1- “fast, effortless, instinctive, emotional, and largely subconscious”

(134)
 System 2- “slow, logical, difficult, plodding, and the product of conscious effort” (134)
 System 1 finds the sum of 2+2, while System 2 finds the products of 74x83.

2. How the two systems work together:

 The effortless impressions and feelings from System 1 are the main sources of System 2’s
created beliefs and thought out choices.
 Both can take up one’s attention but System 2 actually requires it.
 System 2 kicks in when System 1 doesn’t automatically and can overrule it’s set
impulses.

3. The conflict between System 1 and System 2

 Though efficient, System 1 comes with biases and cannot be turned off.
 Automatic reaction and the intention to control it buttheads; such a forcing yourself to
read a boring book.
 Using System 2 and knowledge/facts, one learns to mistrust some of their impressions
and the illusions from System 1.

Conclusion: We cannot live our daily lives constantly questioning our thinking so System 2 is
not going to always catch our errors/biases. The best solution is to “compromise by recognizing
situations in which mistakes are likely and try harder to avoid significant mistakes where stakes
are higher” (p. 144-145).
