Quarter 1: Week 2 -3

Classifying Substances as Elements or Compounds

Background Information
Elements are the simplest complete chemical substances. Each element
corresponds to a single entry on the periodic table. An element is a material that consists of
a single type of atom. Each atom type contains the same number of protons. Chemical
bonds link elements together to form more complex molecules called compounds. A
compound consists of two or more types of elements held together by covalent or ionic
bonds.

Elements cannot be divided into smaller units without large amounts of energy.
Compounds, on the other hand, can have their bonds broken with practical amounts of
energy, such as the heat from a fire.
Matter can be broken down into two categories: pure substances and mixtures. Pure
substances are further broken down into elements and compounds. Mixtures are physically
combined structures that can be separated back into their original components.

KEY POINTS
A substance is simply matter with definite chemical composition and distinct
properties. A substance can be an element or a compound but NOT a mixture. It can also be
matter that exists in its pure form, usually called a pure substance.

A compound is a Letters, numbers,

substance formed and symbols are
when two or more used to represent
elements are elements and the
chemically joined number of elements
in each compound.

Water, salt, and sugar are examples of compounds. When the elements are joined,
the atoms lose their individual properties and have different properties from the elements
they are composed of. A chemical formula is used as a quick way to show the composition
of compounds. An element is the simplest form of matter that has a unique set of properties.
Examples of well-known elements include oxygen, iron, and gold Elements cannot be
broken down into a simpler substance. Likewise, one element cannot be chemically
converted into a different element.
USES OF ELEMENTS

1. Carbon C Found in coal, oil gas, living things, & inks

2. Gold Au A metal used for jewelry & precious decorative pieces
3. Silver Ag Used in tableware, jewelry, photography, medicines, &
coins
4. Copper Cu A metal used for electric wires, pots, pans, & pennies
5. Tin Sn Used to make cans
6. Aluminum Al A light metal used in making airplanes, buildings, pots &
pans, etc
7. Oxygen O A gas necessary for respiration; aids burning
8. Mercury Hg A heavy, poisonous liquid used in some thermometers
9. Silver Ag Used in tableware, jewelry, photography, medicines, &
coins
10. Iron Fe A strong metal used in the construction of buildings, steel,
& machines

USES OF COMPOUNDS

1.. Water H2O For drinking, cooking, household activities and agriculture.
2. Table Salt NaCl Basic ingredient that can be used in many ways like seasoning for
food and one of the most effective preservatives.
3. Sucrose (Sugar) C12H22O11 common sugar which again forms the major ingredient in baking
and cooking.
4. Toothpaste CaCO3 or It is a basic compound which reduces the bacteria present in our
NaF mouth.
5. Baking Soda NaHCO3 Baking powder is the compound consisting of sodium, hydrogen,
and carbonate ions. It is used in baking cakes and desserts. It is also
used in neutralizing stomach acidity. Moreover, it can be used as a
natural deodorant.

Learning Competency:
Recognize substances are classified into elements and compounds

Activity 1: Who am I? And what am I?

Directions: Fill in the missing information below, write the symbol or name of
compound/element then determine whether it is a compound or element in the
last column.

Name Symbol Classification (Elements/Compounds)

Ex: GOLD Au Element
Na
Hydrogen
Methane
Sodium Cloride
Cl
Iron
H2O
Ag
NH3
Iron

ACTIVITY 2: Name an Element

Directions: Using the periodic table of elements, answer the following.

A. Choose 4 elements in the Periodic Table that came from first letter

Activity 4: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?
An Element is a substance that is made from one kind of atom only. It cannot
be broken down into simpler substances. A Compound is a substance that is
made from more than one element.
Directions: Complete the table below. Classify the substances into elements
and compounds.
