STS Module 2..

Charles Darwin's theory of evolution established that all life has descended from common ancestors and that natural selection drives evolution by preserving adaptive traits that increase organisms' chances of survival. His theory, published in On the Origin of Species, completed other scientific theories and influenced modern Western society. It explains adaptation and the diversity of organisms through natural laws and natural processes like the accumulation and sorting of spontaneous variations via natural selection, rather than design.

Assessing Learning

Activity 4
Name: Christian Cunanan Date: ________________________
Course/Year/Section: BSIT 1 Score: _______________________

Directions: One of the focus of intellectual revolution is to highlight the different scientific
ideas that define the present society. Have you ever ask yourself about the relationship of
science and society? With this, answer briefly the following questions by writing on spaces
provided: (5 points each)

1. As student, how do you see connection between science and society?

As a student, I see the connection of science and society just like technology which often
develops because there is a need for it, science helps solve the needs of society. While a
major goal of science is to simply better our understanding, many people leverage science
to help solve real world problems in society. Science has specific role, as well as variety of
functions for the benefit of our society, creating new knowledge, improving education, and
increasing the quality of our lives. In some ways, the influence that technology has had on
society is obvious. The ability to create materials that we use in our everyday life, the
ability to feed a massive amount of people, and so on, are all thanks to the development of
technological innovations.

2. How science shaped the society?

Science finds solutions to society’s problems, and then society finds new uses for the
science. This allows advancing. As we advance society discovers more problems for science
to find solutions to. They shape each other as they continue through the cycle of creating
problems and finding solutions.
3. Cite two (2) scientific ideas that defined our society.
 Knowledge is an increasingly important resource in our society. Science contributes
significantly to the production of knowledge and thus contributes to the functioning of
democracies, drives innovation and helps countries to be competitive in the global
economy.

 Science can never offer a universal truth or an objective representation of the world.
However, it can question the conditions of validity and trigger reflection. Science thus has
an important social role to play.

Directions: Before you begin writing, read the passage carefully and plan what you will say.
Your essay should be as well organized and as carefully written as you can make it.

Discuss your insight on the quotation made by Charles Darwin: “It is not the strongest the
species that survive nor the most intelligent but the one most responsive to change.”
Write your answers on the spaces provided.

The first thing that comes in my mind when I read the quotation of Charles Darwin is
adaptability. For example, the pandemic we are facing right now which is the spreading of
the COVID-19, let’s say that we are all the species that not the strongest nor the most
intelligent but we are the most responsive to change, why? Because all of us are
accustomed to do face to face activities but with spreading of the Covid-19 pandemic we
are all need to adapt the new normal, all of the children, adults all of us needs to adjust to
adapt the new normal which include online classes, mandatory use of face mask and other
protocols and laws.

CHARLES DARWIN EVOLUTION THEORY

An English naturalist, geologist and biologist,

He is Charles Darwin
Best known for his contributions to the science of evolution
Established that all life have descended from common ancestors.

In a publication paper he called The Origin of Species,

A scientific theory that completed other theories
A book that influence
By modern western society.

With Darwin’s discovery of natural selection

Adaptation of organisms
Were brought into realization
And adaptive features of organization will now have explanation.

Explanation through natural laws

In the modern sense of the word
Darwin’s theory of natural selection
Accounts for the design of organisms,

And for their wondrous diversity,

As the result of natural processes,
The gradual accumulation of spontaneously arisen variations
Sorted out by natural selection.
