Lesson 1.4 Answersheet

Necessity drives invention as humans will go to great lengths to solve pressing needs. Many innovations throughout history can be traced back to fulfilling a necessity - the need to hunt led to sharpened stones, the need to communicate drove the development of language, and the need to record information resulted in the invention of printing. In short, necessity is indeed the mother of invention as humans create new technologies and ideas to overcome challenges they face.

Lesson 1.4
SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

Activity # 1-D. Discuss briefly: “Necessity is the Mother of all invention.” Send on my
Messenger.

“Necessity is the mother of all inventions” means that when we have a pressing need for
something, we will go to whatever length to get it. When we do not require anything, we are
unconcerned with it. However, although we are desperately in search of it, we are compelled
to find a way to get it. Man has produced a number of practical inventions. Any one of these
innovations can be traced back to a need. In other words, the invention arose from a pressing
need. As the saying goes, "necessity is the mother of invention." This could be illustrated in a
plethora of ways. The need to battle and destroy animals drove man to create sharp-pointed
stones. The need to communicate with one another drove men to discover languages in the
early days of humanity. Later, the need to maintain some kind of log emerged, which led to
the advent of printing. As a result, we can correctly conclude that necessity is the mother of
innovation.
