Linear and Non-Linear Systems Concepts
Linear and Non-Linear Systems Concepts
one variable or equation (Abramson, 2017). Linear equations refer to algebraic equations
whereby every term is either a product of a constant and a single variable or just a constant.
Conversely, a non-linear system of equations comprises of at least two equations that have at
least two variables that have equations of degrees greater than one. The non-linear equations may
have a line equation and curve and is used to solve complex problems that involve multiple
relations that are known. A non-linear equation with two degrees resembles a parabola, while of
three degrees resemble a curvy x-shape.
The linear and non- linear systems concepts that I needed to accommodate include;
parabola, relation, variable, linear function, ordered pairs, coordinate, zero, root, y-intercept, x-
intercept, x-axis, y-axis, slope intercept form, point- slope equation, slope intercept form,
standard form, conic section, intersection, linear, superposition, non-linear, superposition
principle, elimination method, substitution method, tangent, complex, recurrence relations,
inverse variation, vertical lines, and horizontal lines (Abramson, 2017).
The simplest linear system function that I can imagine of takes the form of Y=X, and an
example of a linear system is;
X+2Y= 3… (i)
X-Y= -1…. (iii)
The simplest non-linear system function that I can imagine of takes the form Y=X^2, and
an example of a non-linear system is;
X^2+2Y=5
X^2-Y=1
Linear systems and non-linear systems have many applications in day to day real life. For
instance, the rates of pay compilations whereby formulating a linear equation to assist in
comparing the pay rates can be interpreted as linear systems and non-linear systems. Another
typical example of linear systems is in financial modelling whereby profits can be projected
when some variables are already known, with some variable being dependent on others. An
example of a real life situation that can be interpreted as a non-linear system is the calculation of
space that can fit an item whose measure is already known. Another know example of a non-
linear system is a curve road which is more of a straight line but takes a small curve on either
side of the road.
The strategy are I use to get the graph of linear systems and non-linear systems includes
using Desmos calculator which is simple and accurate. Alternatively, I can achieve this by
simplifying the equations on both end and then placing similar variables together, after which I
make the variable term coefficient equating to zero.
