Worksheet 3 - Parabola With Applications 1

This document contains a worksheet with multiple questions about parabolas and their properties. It asks students to find the vertex, focus, directrix, latus rectum, and equation of parabolas given different conditions. It also asks students to find the equation of a parabola given specific properties like the vertex, focus, or directrix. The final question asks students to solve a word problem about a suspension bridge cable and satellite dish receiver placement using parabolic equations.

Worksheet #3: Parabola and its Applications

Name: ____________________________________________ Date of Submission: _______________

Section: __________________________ Teacher: ____________________________

A. For the following items, find the (a) vertex, (b) focus, (c) equation of the directrix, and
(d) length and (e) endpoints of the latus rectum of the parabola. (10pts)

1. 3 y2 +25 x=0

(a) vertex: _______________ (d) length of latus rectum: __________

(b) focus: ________________ (e) endpoints of the latus rectum: __________
(c) equation of the directrix: _______________
2
2. ( x+5 ) =20 ( y−2 )

(a) vertex: _______________ (d) length of latus rectum: __________

(b) focus: ________________ (e) endpoints of the latus rectum: __________
(c) equation of the directrix: _______________

B. Find the equation of the parabola satisfying the given conditions. Write the answer in
(a) standard form, and (b) general form. (10pts)

1. vertex at the origin∧ passing through ( 2,−3 )

(a) y²=9/2x

(b) y²-9/2x=0

2. vertex at ( 1,5 )∧directrix is the x −axis

(a) (y-5) ²= 4(x-1)

(b) y²-4x-10y+29=0

3. vertex at (−4 ,−8 )∧directrix is x =0

(a) (y+8) ²=-16(x+4)

(b) y²+16x+16y+128=0
4. opens ¿ the¿ focusat ( 4,3 ) ∧one endpoint of thelatus rectumis ( 4,7 )

(a) (y-3) ²=-8(x-6)

(b) y²+8x-6y-39=0

5. opens upward with vertex at (−12,−6 ) ∧with directrix y =−17

(a) (x+12) ²= 44(y+6)

(b) x²+24x-44y-120=0

C. Solve the following problem completely. (5pts)

1. The towers supporting the cable of a suspension bridge are 1200m apart and 170m
above the bridge it supports. Suppose the cable hangs, following the shape of a
parabola, with its lowest point 20m above the bridge. How high is the cable 120m
away from a tower?
(x-h)²=4p(y-k)

h,k = (0,20)
x,y = (600,170)

(600-0)²=4p(170-20)
600²=4p(150)
p = 600²/150(4)
p = 600

x = 600-120 = 480
y=?

(x-h)²=4p(y-k)
(480-0)²=4(600)(y-20)
480²=2400y-48000
y = 480²+48000/2400
y = 116m

2. A satellite dish in the shape of a paraboloid is 10ft across, and 4ft deep at its vertex.
How far is the receiver from the vertex, if it is placed at the focus? Round off your
answer to 2 decimal places.
