Arts and Crafts of Cagayan
3 Valley and Central Luzon

Cagayan Valley is home to the longest river in the country – Cagayan River and
is composed of the provinces of Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela, Nueva Viscaya and
Quirino. Central Luzon on the other hand is composed of the provinces of Bulacan,
Pampanga, Zambales, Nueva Ecija, and Bataan. Just like on the first module, you will
gain a deeper understanding of our culture by analyzing the salient features of arts in
the culturally-diverse communities in our country.

Introductory Message
Modules are self-contained and independent learning package of learning
instruction aligned to the learning competencies of the K-12 Curriculum and
objectives. These are designed to facilitate learning through the creative, substantial,
and sequential development of activities considering the students to independently
manage his own learnings. Varied activities are provided to challenge student to
interact actively towards independent and self-guided learning experiences.

For the facilitator:

To maximize the functional use of this module, conduct an orientation to guide

the students, parents, or guardians the proper care and use of this module.

Each student will need an answer sheet or notebook for their pre-test, activity
check-up test and post-test. Return the module with the answer sheet to the teacher
after completion for assessment.

Let me give you a simple definition of the terms you will encounter in studying
the different arts and crafts of Cagayan Valley and Central Luzon. Please read them
before proceeding to the next challenge.

Limestones – a rock that is formed chiefly

by accumulation of organic remains (such
as shells or coral), consists mainly of
calcium carbonate.

Trinket – a small ornament (such as

jewelry or ring).

Landmark – a structure (such as building)

of unusual historical and usually aesthetic
interest.

Column – a supporting pillar consisting of

base.

Brick – a handy size unit of building or

paving material typically being rectangular
and made of moist clay hardened by heat.

Architecture – the art or practice of

designing and building structures and
especially habitable ones.

Fronds – a large leaf usually with many

divisions.

ACTIVITY 1: Let us Travel

The following are the distinct arts and crafts of Cagayan Valley and Central
Luzon arranged by their province of origin:

CAGAYAN VALLEY

Batanes

- The Ivatans are the people living in the Batanes

Group of Islands.
- Their houses have unique architectural forms made
up of limestones walls, reed, and cogon roofs. The
design and material are chosen because they are
strong to withstand the numerous typhoons and
earthquakes that hit the group of islands because of
its geographic location.

- Vakul is a head gear used by the Ivatan women to

protect them from the heat of the sun and the rains.

- The men on the other hand, wear soot, a rain cape

made from fronds. This special clothing is made up of
woven fibers of the vuyavuy palm – a plant like
coconut.

Isabela

- Isabela is one of the largest provinces in the

Philippines. It is host to several historical sites.
- Tumauini Church is a Roman Catholic Parish Church
of San Matias Apostol. This Baroque Church was built
in 1873 and can be found in the municipality of
Tumauini, Isabela. It is made from red bricks
ornamented with carvings of flowers, leaves, scallops,
saints, religious symbols, and other fanciful motifs.
The unique cylindrical belfry of the church looks like
a huge wedding cake because of its design motifs like
laces, hearts, and beads.

Nueva Viscaya

- Nueva Vizcaya is located near Ifugao, Benguet, and

Quirino. The Gaddangs of Nueva Viscaya are known
for their crafts and textiles.

- One of the clothes they make is the bakwat, a belt

used by mothers after giving birth. This cloth is
usually adorned on the central portion with white
beads as accents embellished in patterns that
represent rivers and mountains.

CENTRAL LUZON
Bulacan

- Bulacan arts and crafts includes the singkaban,

pastillas wrapper, firecrackers, and goldsmithing in
Meycauayan.
- The women cut intricately designed pastillas wrappers
adorned with different linear, curvilinear, and
geometric designs that depict local floras and scenes
of everyday rural life.

- Singkaban is a local term for bamboo arches designed

with kayas or wood shaving. These are used as
decorative arches that adorn the entrance of a
barangay or town during fiestas and other grand
celebrations.

- Meycauayan , Bulacan is known for its jewelry

industry. Craftsmen fashion trinkets from precious
metals such as gold and silver, and precious and semi-
precious stones, pearls, and diamonds.

- A jeweler is a person who makes, repairs, or sells

jewelry; traces jewelry designs to the metal; cuts,
bonds, and shapes it to form jewelry pieces. Some
designs (such as those found in antique jewelries) are
completely done by hand because these cannot be
done by machines.

Pampanga

- Pampanga is known for its giant lanterns or parol. Its

special feature is its dancing lights in several shapes,
and colors that form intricate geometric patterns. The
patterns change with the rotation as a special rotor
that controls the lights inside the parol. The parols are
used to adorn houses, streets, and buildings, not only
in Pampanga but all over the Philippines during the
Christmas season.
- These are created from steel frames and other locally
available materials. The Pampanga lanterns are
progressively developed as they become bigger and the
designs become more complicated.

Famous Architectural Landmarks in Olongapo, Zambales, Nueva Ecija

and Bataan
- The Spanish Gate is one of the historic landmarks
located in Olongapo City, Zambales. It was built in
1885. It faced the Spanish era settlement of Olongapo
and used to serve as the west gate of the armory of the
town.
- It has high walls made from locally quarried stone
connected to the south gate that faced the waterfront.
- Aside from being used as an entrance and exit to the
naval station, it was also used as a jail during the
Spanish and American occupations.

- The San Andres Apostol Parish Church of Masinloc,

Zambales is known for the use of coral stones instead
of adobe. It was founded by the Augustinian Recollects
in 1607.

- The front of the church is divided into the triangular

pediment, two horizontal sections and three vertical
ones. The left portion is extended to form the bell
tower.

- The lowest level contains niches for saints. The

second level has rectangular windows and curve
niches of the patron saints. Carvings of a medallion
and other geometric shapes can be found on the
pediment.

 - The belfry is composed of circular columns topped by
a lantern and a cross

- The Parish of the Three Kings in Gapan City is one

of the biggest and the oldest churches in Nueva
Ecija. This Roman Catholic Church was built in
1800’s. It has huge side doorways, two standing
images of the patron saints on both sides of the
doorways, and a mural of the Holy Trinity on the
ceiling, all of which are characteristics of a western
architecture.

- Abucay Church or the Saint Dominic De Guzman

Parish Church, established in 1587 and
administered in 1588 by the Dominicans, is an
example of Renaissance architecture because of its
vertically single- or double-divided columns, and
triangular pediments. It has a five-layer bell tower
ornamented with semicircular arched windows.

Art of Paper Cutting

Pastillas wrapper designers are not as they were before. However, paper
cutting in the Philippines, through online media, is slowly getting popular again. It
has taken a different turn and is not only being used for pastillas wrappers but also
used in invitations, party favors, and other forms of gift items. It is time for you to
try it and help pastillas or paper cut designing popular again!
