Effects of Watching TV
Discoveries and invention of devices are always welcome until humans find a way to abuse its
benefits and be adversely affected by it. TV was sure to be invented with positive thoughts in mind.
Without any doubt, the inventor of the TV thought, there would be no national borders, education and
communication would be worldwide. However, it turned out to be the fact that people have become
this most popular invention’s slaves. What has caused to this type of addiction? What are the reason
people can’t spend a day without turning their TV on? The answer is simple: habits. This essay will
explain the causes of watching TV excessively and look at some of the effects. The causes of this both
habitual and emotional watching TV include getting away from stress and antisocializing. These, in turn,
come back effects on psychology and physiology. Nowadays people are now trying to overcome TV’s
physiological and psychological adverse effects on human beings.
There are several reasons for TV addiction. One of the main causes of people can’t help
watching it is they want to get rid of daily stress. Because of some children seeing their parents watch
TV all day long, they do the same action. To make it clear, Turkish fathers are generally stereotypical in a
way they turn the TV on right after they come home from work. This habit has been the same
throughout the years and not surprisingly the children of this kind of family will see the TV as a
relaxation activity. Another contributing factor of watching TV too much is antisocializing. Although
there may be good movies at some specific hours, people turn the TV on whenever they feel emotional.
To specify, elder people are obsessed with soap operas and even some of them are talking with the
characters. These mentioned people do not prefer to talk to each other. In fact, they see the TV a way of
communication. This rule also works for younger generations. In their mood swings, they try to fit some
characters which are present on some TV series in their lives. Some of the teenagers act like these TV
characters and follow their actions no matter how far they can get.
One of the physiological effects of watching TV in excessive amounts is eye-strain. It is true that
there are specifications for watching TV; TV should be 5 m. away from the eye, the room should be
adequately lit, TV should be placed at the same height with our eyes, etc. However, these do not
prevent our eyes from getting tired if we keep watching TV for a long time. Another effect is obesity,
which is widely observed in people who like watching TV and eating snacks everyday (there is even a
term “TV snacks” to refer to fast food that is suitable for eating in front of the TV). TV is such a powerful
machine that people cannot get away from it – it is addictive. Apart from the physiological effects, TV
also causes psychological effects. One is a result of being exposed to violence. After seeing so many
violent scenes on TV, people start considering violent actions normal and they lose their sensitivity to
their environment. Partly connected to this effect, the interpersonal communication among people
decreases. Being insensitive to the suffering of other people causes people to become alienated. Also,
after coming home from work people seek to relax in front of the TV, and generally people prefer
watching TV to talking to each other. This issue is very important since lack of interpersonal relationships
mostly end with divorces.
In conclusion, inventions are meant to be beneficial for human beings, if we know how to
benefit from them. TV is one of such inventions that need to be used for the right purpose only – being
educated and entertained for a reasonable (according to age) period of time. We may, then, be safe
from or at least reduce the adverse physiological and psychological effects of watching too much TV.
Since it seems a bit hard to get away from this kind of addiction, people should set time limits before
they sit in front of this device.
