LESSON #1 SCIENCE (Chemical Bonding)
INCLUSIVE DATE:

In this unit, the standards are:

The learners demonstrate an understanding of the

1. development of atomic models that led to the description of the behavior of
electrons within atoms
2. how atoms combine with other atoms by transferring or by sharing electrons
3. forces that hold metals together

The learners shall be able to analyze the percentage composition of different

brands of two food products and decide on the products’ appropriate percentage
composition

For Lesson 1, we will have the following learning targets. At the end of the lesson, check
the column that best describes your assessment of your own learning relative to the given
learning targets.

LET’S GET STARTED!

Good Morning/Afternoon! How are you today?
Before we start the lesson, join me in praying one Hail Mary and a Glory Be.
Atoms are a part of our everyday life. Even though people might not realize it, they contribute to
more things than people may think. From small things such as a small pebble, to something huge,
like a castle. They inhabit our lives in more ways than one.

Do you want to know what are we going to tackle today?

If your answer is yes, answer the riddle below.

QUANTUM MECHANICAL MODEL

Erwin Schrödinger proposed the quantum mechanical model of the atom,
which treats electrons as matter waves. Electrons have an intrinsic
property called spin, and an electron can have one of two possible spin
values: spin-up or spin-down. Any two electrons occupying the same orbital
must have opposite spins.

The electron configuration of an atom is the representation of the arrangement of

electrons distributed among the orbital shells and sub shells. The next activity will help us
understand the electronic configuration of an element.

ELECTRONIC CONFIGURATION

As we go through the next activity, let us keep in mind this question: Why do we follow certain
patterns in chemistry and in life?

QUESTION #1

Valence electrons can be determined

from an atom’s electron configuration
and the position of elements in the
periodic table.

Elements in the periodic table are arranged in groups. Each

group has the same number of Valence electron.

7|Page
Let’s try!
Using your periodic table, determine the number of Valence electron of each element.

1. Hydrogen - _______ 2. Flourine - ________

3. Aluminum - ________ 4. Radium - ________

5. Sodium - ________ 6. Helium - ________

7. Francium - ________ 8. Iodine - ________

9. Antimony - ________ 10. Bismuth - ________

Science

Gilbert Newton Lewis pioneered the explanation on

the relationship between electron structure and
chemical bonding. Thus, Lewis structures are being
used to monitor the valence electrons and to assure
that the number of electrons does not change
before and after a chemical bond has been formed.

Now, let us take a look at the example given below. You will notice that the number of their
electron is same with the group number they belong. After analyzing the given examples, try to
draw the LEDS of the given elements.

other similar materials.
3. DO NOT make any stray/ unnecessary
marks on the Answer Sheet.

Based on our lesson, what are your new learning and realizations as a child of God? In
the box below, write your lesson’s reflection through a prayer. A related Bible verse is also
provided below to help and guide you more on the prayer you will formulate. Together, let us
do things toward His Holiness because we are precious in His eyes.

“Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed, or

hidden that will not be known. Therefore whatever
you have said in the dark shall be heard in the light,
and what you have whispered in private rooms shall
be proclaimed on the housetops”

Luke 12:2-3

MY REFLECTION

We would like to hear from you and your parent/guardian comments and
observations of this module. If you have suggestions, please feel free to write it o the
