Optimise Power Resiliency Performance by Design

A robust electrical design increases the power availability of the infrastructure

In this design the continuity of services is optimised using:
• Multiple power sources:
- Separate utilities sources that can each supply power for the two buildings
- Generator backup system (24-hour autonomy) spreads over the two buildings for power supply in case of a utility or

RESILIENT & HYPER EFFICIENT

Reinforce Power Resiliency & Efficiency by Digitization

Digitization helps the facility manager reduce downtime and improve efficiency
Even with a robust electrical design, the electrical distribution in a hospital is a living infrastructure that must be monitored
to maintain a high level of availability, safety and efficiency during the whole life of the Hospital Buildings.
A Power Management System helps the facility manager know the current status of the electrical installation from the utility
source to the final loads, as the operating rooms, at any time and from any location . This way, actions can be anticipated,
reducing downtime, mitigating disturbances and improving efficiency.

Electrical Distribution Monitoring and Alarming

Monitor the status of the electrical distribution with a real-time dynamic
single line diagram, which immediately provides a current view of the
electrical sources and paths powering the final loads.
If issues arise, time-stamped alarms and events are logged in the system
and visualized in intelligent grouping to minimize clutter. Optionally, a digital
service can analyse alarms to optimise alarm views.

Dynamic Single Line Diagram

Power event Analysis

Help diagnose the root cause of power events across the entire system by
plotting events on a timeline to identify the initial issue and take prompt
action.

Power event Analysis

Electrical Asset management

Specific attention must be taken on critical equipment as Transformers,
Generators, UPS equipment and batteries, Circuit Breaker, isolated panels.
Dedicated dashboards and reports related to the health status of these
assets are presented.
This helps the facility manager schedule the maintenance at the right time
and at the right location, thus avoiding some potential issues.
UPS Performance Dashboard
Services using predictive analytics can provide additional maintenance
recommendations.

Power Quality
Some power quality disturbances can affect critical or sensitive equipment
as well as the overall health of the infrastructure’s electrical network.
Continuously measuring the power quality of the network helps the facility
manager identify over/undervoltage, sags/swells, transients, harmonics...
and then take appropriate actions as example add harmonics filters using
AccuSine equipment.
Power Quality Dashboard

Energy Efficiency & Sustainability

Hospitals are huge energy consumers, the power management system
helps detect errors in energy bill, reduce power factor and identify possible
areas of abnormal power consumption.

Mitigate Fire Risk from Electrical cause

Risk of fire must be considered throughout the life of the hospital infrastructure
The risk of fire due to electrical cause (over-current, over-voltage, over-heating, high short circuit, arc fault, power connection
issues...) can result in catastrophic damage and must be considered throughout the whole life of hospital buildings, at all
levels of architecture. A risk assessment must be performed to define precautions from design to maintenance.
Here are some examples.

Optimise maintenance and electrical asset life

Moving to condition-based maintenance increases asset life and avoids disturbance

By receiving advance alerts of abnormally operating devices, the maintenance team can plan maintenance activities at the
right moment and at the right place. This proactiveness helps save operating, maintenance, and down time cost, optimises
asset life and reduces occurrences of crisis situations.

Capacity management
The electrical distribution infrastructure in
hospital is always evolving. Since electrical loads
often increase over time, particular attention
must be taken to not exceed the rating of
electrical devices as transformers, generators,
UPSs, circuit breakers…
While exceeding the rated capacity may means
nothing more than nuisance trips, it can also
result in overheating or fires.
Circuit Breaker capacity dashboard Equipment capacity report
Collecting electrical load data from these
devices, allows the monitoring system to
highlight some over capacity usages via trends,
dashboards and reports with historical loadings
as regards to equipment capacity.

Circuit Breaker Settings monitoring

The circuit breaker protection settings are
essential to ensure the total selectivity between
circuit breakers.
Collecting and presenting these settings in a
synthesis report (with changes highlighted)
during the commissioning phase and
periodically, thereafter, help the facility manager
identify the root causes of any settings or
co-ordination problems. Circuit Breaker setting report

RESILIENT & HYPER EFFICIENT

Optimise availability & efficiency avoiding Power Quality

disturbance
Monitoring power quality and acting on issues make the building more resilient
& efficient
Power quality disturbances can affect critical or sensitive equipment as well as the building electrical network, potentially
jeopardizing the power availability of the hospital.
By monitoring the power quality of the infrastructure, incidents can be detected and actions taken to help prevent outages due
this situation. In addition, optimising the power factor could also make the hospital more efficient, saving cost on energy bills.

Power Quality monitoring

Monitoring persistent steady state and event-
based power quality disturbances such as
harmonics, current unbalance, flicker and over/
under voltage conditions, transients and
interruptions, provides information to the facility
manager to take the proper corrective action at
the right place.
Power quality performance dashboard
Power Monitoring Expert collects data from
devices to present the power quality situation
of the hospital using: Single line with Power Quality
Disturbance Direction
• dashboards, trends and reports to understand
potential issues that could affect operations
• event details such as timeline and waveforms
for deep analysis
• indication of Disturbance Direction Detection
to locate the origin of the disturbance
Power quality incident dashboard
(information collected from ION9000 or
Waveform related to Transient
PM8000 power quality devices) on an events
list or single-line diagram.

Compliance with standards

Reports provided by Power Monitoring Expert
are compliant with such, international standards
as IEC 61000-4-30, EN 50160-2000 and
EN 50160-2010 which address allowable
power quality limits and durations.

Dedicated UPS for sensitive

equipment
Some hospital medical equipment, such as MRIs
... and IEC 61000 reports
or X-Ray scanners, is very sensitive to power
disturbances. If this equipment does not have an
embedded UPS, a dedicated UPS shall be
provided.

Power Advisor and cloud services

Executive analyses for both data quality and
electrical network analytics provide high-level
insights into the health of the power monitoring
system and help support the validity of its data
for targeted decision making.
They prioritise power quality issues based on
severity and recommend expert methods for
optimising system performance through
corrective service actions.

HYPER EFFICIENT

Optimise efficiency detecting opportunities

for energy saving
Awareness of energy consumption and usage is the first step for improvement
“You can’t change what you don’t measure!". Studies show that buildings or facilities with sub-metering and cost allocation
use less energy than those that allocate energy cost by area per m² or other non-metered allocation methods.
Typically, a 10 to 20% reduction in usage can be achieved due to behavior change and conservation.
Energy management monitoring which collects energy data from standalone power meters or embedded circuit protection
meters, highlights areas of improvement.

Utility Billing Verification

By comparing energy consumed during the billing period,
shadow bills can be used to provide evidence to illustrate
errors to the utility company, which can quickly provide a
return on investment.
Understanding the billing "levers" can help change behavior
(peak shaving, demand response...).

Energy cost allocation

Find the biggest energy savings opportunities by allocating
energy cost by department, business unit, area, floor or
building to make each aware of their energy consumption
and potential improvement. Energy Usage Mapping per branch

Power Factor Correction

Measuring and correcting the power factor caused by inductive
loads with Varset capacitor bank and VarPlus Logic power
factor controller, can result in a quick return of investment (ROI)
by eliminating penalties charged by many utilities.
Power Factor Trend
Energy monitoring and performance
Becoming aware of energy usage by turning data into
information and representing energy usage and consumption
through easy-to-interpret graphical dashboards and reports
to help the energy manager optimise energy usage:
• By comparing and visualising hourly, daily, weekly, monthly
and yearly energy usage, and detecting abnormal
consumptions
• By identifying and prioritizing which load types, areas
or hospitals provide a better return on investment (ROI)
for energy conservation initiatives.
Energy Usage Mapping per areas

Energy modelling and verification Power Factor Trend

Heat map to detect quickly abnormal consumption
Provide a feedback loop between energy managers and
operations by analysing the energy performance of the facility
or building against a modelled baseline which considers all
relevant energy drivers such as outside temperature or patient
occupancy number.

Energy efficiency compliance

Enable a systematic approach to achieving continuous energy
performance improvement:
• By making energy usage visible at all stages of an energy
management and improvement plan
Energy regression analysis
• By providing transparency through reporting on Energy
Performance Indicators (EnPI) to regulators or company ISO 50001 Certificate
leadership, and demonstrating continuous improvement.

SUBSTAINABLE

Increase Sustainability & Reduce carbon footprint

Sustainability is a key concern that shall be considered from the design phase
Actions such as integrating new renewables energy, selecting efficient products and solutions, optimising the power factor...
help make the building more sustainable. Below are some examples.

Rooftop solar production for self-consumption

By adding solar energy production, the hospital could
produce part of its own energy. This would help reduce its
energy bill and optimise the building environmental impact.
The photovoltaic system operates in parallel to the utility
supply and provides electricity to the electrical installation
during the hours of photovoltaic production.
The photovoltaic inverters may also operate in back-up mode,
in parallel to the diesel generators. In this case, for network Connext CL-60A
3-Phase String Inverter
stability reasons, the photovoltaic production shall be limited
to 20% of generator production.

Galaxy UPS with ECOnversion mode and AC in

Lithium-ion batteries Bypass Switch

With its multiple operating modes, double Conversion Mode AC in Load

(96% efficiency at 30% load) and ECOnversion Mode (up to

99% efficiency), the Galaxy UPS optimises efficiency and PFC Rectifier Inverter

lowers operation costs.

In addition, the Galaxy’s Li-ion batteries significantly reduce + +
the footprint and weight of the power storage. This technology Battery

doubles the life of power storage and simplifies maintenance Galaxy VS in ECOnversion mode

vs. traditional batteries.

Greenhouse gas reporting

Greenhouse gas reporting is based on equivalent tones of
CO2 emissions in saved trees, km driven, etc.
The Building Energy Rating is directly linked to energy
consumption per square meter.
Carbon emissions are reported and segmented by source,
scope and pollutant, and can be indexed to various metrics. Building energy rating dashboard
