Differentiating Falling Objects From Free-Falling Objects Activity

1. The document describes a home laboratory activity to observe how different objects fall at different speeds due to factors like air resistance and surface area. 2. Three pairs of objects were dropped from heights of 0.5m and 1m, including a paper vs. crumpled paper, paper vs. rock, and crumpled paper vs. rock. The crumpled paper and rock reached the ground at the same time due to their small surface areas limiting air resistance. 3. Wider surface area objects like paper encountered more air resistance and fell slower than objects with smaller surface areas, demonstrating how surface area and air resistance impact fall time differently than weight alone.

I’m Falling for You. . .

Home-Laboratory Activity

I- Introduction:
The universe is vast and complicated. For us to understand and know more about it, we need those
scientists and philosophers for us to know and to dig deeper about the studies of our universe. Even how
objects move is one of the studies of Galileo’s concept of motion regarding falling objects. Which one of
his studies, which is the free-falling objects that objects with different weights can reach the ground at the
same time.

In this activity will discuss about the explanation of Galileo’s concept of motion regarding falling
objects. Here we can visually observe the effect of different forces on the given materials. We will know
what objects will fell faster into ground and the objects that will fell slower into the ground with the same
distance and the same time it was released. And the difference between falling objects from free-falling
objects.

II- Objectives:
1. Observe which of the objects did reach the ground first;
2. What kind of forces resists an object to fall;
3. Observe the effect of different forces in different objects present in the activity;
4. And differentiate falling objects from free-falling objects.

III- Materials:
a. pair 1: a piece of paper and a crumpled paper

b. pair 2: a piece of paper and medium-size rock

c. pair 3: a piece of crumpled paper and medium size-rock

IV- Procedures/ Steps:

Step 1: Set both of the objects (pair 1) same distance from the ground using the meter stick and
measurement.
Step 2: Let the two objects fall together towards the ground.
Step 3: Record and observe your data in the given table.
Step 4: Do the same for the remaining 2 pairs of objects.

V- Data and Observation Table:

0.5m drop 1m drop Observations

Set-up/ Pairs of Objects (What fell (What fell (keen visual observation
faster?) faster?) only)
1. Piece of paper and Crumpled paper Crumpled paper I notice that the crumpled
crumpled paper. paper fells faster than the
piece of paper.With the
same distance and at the
same time, it was released.
2. Piece of paper and Medium-size Medium-size I noticed that the medium-
medium -size rock. rock rock size rock hits the ground first
before the piece of paper
landed into the ground. With
the same distance and at
the same time, it was
released.
3. Piece of crumpled paper Both of the two Both of the I noticed that both of the two
and medium-size rock. objects fells into two objects fells objects fells into the ground
the ground at the into the ground at at the same time. With the
same time. the same time. same distance and at the
same time, it was released.

Guide Questions:
Explain the following comprehensively.

1. Based on your observations, what factors do you think affect the fall of the objects?

Based on my observations, the factors that affect the objects to fall is gravity and with the presence of the air
there will be an air resistance. With air resistance, the two objects cannot easily reach the ground faster
because there will be a force that will resist them, while the two objects where falling. And the only force that
pulls them to the ground is gravity. Which is also called free-falling objects which is the claim of Galileo. In
conclusion, free-falling objects are falling objects without the presence of air resistance. While the Falling
objects are falling objects with the presence of air resistance.

2. What pair/s of materials did reach the ground at the same time? What do you think is the reason
for this occurrence?

The pairs of materials that did reach the ground at the same time is only the last pair which is the crumpled
paper and a medium-sized rock. The reason why the two objects reached the ground at the same time. With
the same distance and the same time, it was released. Because both of the objects have small surface
areas. This means if there is a small space of surface area, also there is a small space of air resistance that
will resist the objects from falling. The wider the surface area, the more that there is air resistance. That is
why both of the objects reached the ground at the same time even with different weights because the two
objects have a small space of surface area.

3.
What pair/s of materials did not reach the ground at the same time? What do you think is the
reason for this occurrence?

The pairs of materials that did not reach the ground at the same time are pair 1 and pair 2. The reason why
the two pairs did not reach the ground at the same time. With the same distance and at the same time it was
released. Because both pairs have a wider surface area which is the piece of paper unlike the crumpled
paper and the medium-size rock with a small space of surface area. With a wider space of surface area, also
there is a wider space of air resistance. Unless if we remove the air, there will be no air resistance no matter
how wide is the surface area of an object.
VI- Conclusion:
Therefore, I conclude that both pairs 1 and 2 did not reach the ground at the same time because of the piece
of paper that has a wider space of surface area. When the surface area is wide the wider the air resistance
will be. Unless if we remove the air no matter how wide is the surface area there will no air resistance. Also,
the only force that will pull the objects downward is gravity. Only the last pair of materials did reach the
ground at the same time.Which are the crumpled paper and the medium-sized rock. With the same distance
and at the same time, it was released. The reason why the two objects have reached the ground at the same
time because both of them have a small space of surface area. The small space of surface area, the smaller
space of air resistance will be. Which makes the two objects reached the ground at the same time. I also
know how to differentiate falling objects from free-falling objects. Falling objects are falling objects with the
presence of a wide space of surface air and a with wider space of air resistance. While Free-falling objects
are falling objects with the presence of a small space of surface area and a small space of air resistance. Or
sometimes without the presence of air, there will be no air resistance that resists the objects from falling
