Y N X (N: ECEP 353 Quiz # 2

This document contains questions about system properties and classifications. It asks the reader to determine if a given system is time invariant, write a difference equation, and classify several other systems as static/dynamic, causal/noncausal, linear/non-linear, and stable/unstable. Examples are provided to analyze time invariance by applying an input signal and comparing the output to a time-shifted version.

I. Consider the system

y [ n ] =x [n2 ]

a. Determine if the system is time invariant.

b. To clarify the result in part (a) assume that the signal
x [n]= 1,∧0 ≤ n≤ 3
{0 ,∧elsewhere
is applied into the system.
1. Sketch the signal x [n].
2. Determine and sketch the signal y [n].
3. Sketch the signal y ' 2 [ n ] = y [n−2].
4. Determine and sketch the signal x 2 [ n ]= x [n−2].
5. Determine and sketch the signal y 2 [ n ] =x 2 [n ].
6. Compare the signals y 2 [ n ]and y [n−2]. What is your conclusion?

II. Write a difference equation that relates the output y [n] and the input x[n].

III. Classify the following systems and state the reason why.
a. y [ n ] =odd { x [n ] } (static or dynamic)
b. y [ n ] =x [−n] (causal or noncausal)
c. y [ n ] =even { x [n] } (linear or non-linear)
d. y [ n ] =n2 x [n] (stable or unstable)
