English Reading Passages

UNIFORM OR ANYFORM No. of Words: 279

Lirio G. Parale

Uniform is having the same dimension and aspect. It also means

similar shade and form. The same goes with the wearing of uniform in school.
In which it would require every student to wear prescribed color and cut. But
the point is, is wearing school uniform sensible?
Wearing school uniform means identity. Students can be recognized
easily as part of the educational institution where they are currently enrolled.
Wherever they are, whether in mall or even in any public places, they will be
easily identified a student of a particular school. However, it would be
discerning for the students if shade and cut of the uniform varies. They will
become subject to bullying amongst other students. Inaptness might arise as
well as the feeling of discomfort seeing that the uniform worn differs from the
rest of the group. Thus, variety in shades and cut will no longer be called
uniform but would mean any form.
Wearing school uniform means unity. Students in uniform would have
the feeling of belongingness. Students will have the culture of “It is ‘US’ ” when
students are gathered during students assembly. Like for instance during a
contest or any event which was participated by their school, students eyed for
their uniform and cheered for their schoolmates while booing against
contemporaries. On the other hand, school-based mandate of wearing uniform
will be divisive specially among indigents. The mandate to wear school uniform
deprived their right for the recognition of culture and identity.
Wearing uniform is good particularly when it appeals for common good.
Yet, it will be a respectable school-based discretion if it will not violate students’
right to learn , thus resulting to prejudice.

KIPING of LUKBAN No. of Words: 295

Lirio G. Parale

Lukban, Quezon – a town situated near the foot of majestic Mt.

Banahaw is known for its “Kiping” specially during the celebration of Pahiyas
Festival every 15th of May in honor of the patron saint of farmer, St,Isidore the
Labrador. This is the way of giving thanks for the bountiful harvest of the
people.
“Kiping” comes in different colors and shapes. Townspeople placed it in
layers of colors and design into what people called it “arangya”. Kiping
becomes beautiful and attractive when placed infront of the houses. These
“arangya’ were artistically design in facade of the houses as the procession
passed by.
“Kiping” is a leaf shaped in different exceptional colors. Behind these
beautiful “arangya” is the making of “Kiping.”
First, put the rice in a bowl with water. Leave for 30 minutes. Then,
remove the water and let it machine grind to become rice paste. To give color
mixed the rice paste with food dye depending on the desired color. Allow the
rice paste flows on the leaf shaped leaving definite amount of on top of it. Steam
the leaf shaped with rice paste for a minute or two. Not less than minute for it
will be half steamed. Not more than a minute for it will melt. Amount of
steaming time depends both on the thickness of applied rice paste on the leaf
shaped or the amount of heat during steaming. Let the steamed leaf shaped
air dried. Moderately air dried, slowly and gently remove the rice paste on the
leaf shaped. It is now the “kiping” removed from leaf shaped. Place a string on
the bottom of leaf shaped.
Aside from the artistic benefit of “Kiping” when design into
“arangya” it is also a healthy snack when fried or cooked over burnt coal.

NO TREES NO LIFE
No. of Words: 289
Richalle Ann P. Lim

Trees play a major role for human survival in many various ways.
Trees release oxygen as byproduct of photosynthesis and humans need oxygen
to breathe in order to live. Moreover, trees also give us clean air as it absorb
pollutants in the air like carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide.

quality. Trees are habitat for many living things including those in extinction.
Trees also stabilize the soil thus preventing soil erosion and floods. A good soil

Trees are not only essential to one’s survival. Being the longest species
living on Earth, trees connect us from the past and the future. The oldest trees
remind us to live life to the fullest and to protect what we have in the present for
our future generation.

the disastrous consequences of our actions. We benefit the most in our trees, but

UNSUNG HEROES No. of Words: 380

Richalle Ann P. Lim

When you are asked to name national heroes in our country, typical
answers are those which we commonly learn from history books such as Jose
Rizal, Apolinario Mabini, or Andres Bonifacio.
While they play key figures in our historic events, there are those heroes
that remain unknown and forgotten. Unless, we take time to rediscover some
of them.
Teresa Magbanua was best known among those female revolutionaries
and was dubbed as “Visayan Joan of Arc.” Born in 1863, Teresa is a school
teacher and a revolutionary leader. She was the only woman in the Visayan
area to lead troops during the revolution. She was one of those few heroes who
consistently joined revolutionary movement during the Spanish, American, and
Japanese colonization.
Captain Jose Cabalfin Calugas was a member of the Philippine Scouts
and was the first Filipino soldier to have received the WWII Medal of Honor
after his heroic act during World War II. He was captured along with the other
unit member and was held a prisoner. He was released in 1943 and was
secretly assigned to a guerilla unit to liberate the Philippines from the
Japanese.
The founder of the Girl Scouts of the Philippines, Josefa Llanes Escoda,
was also considered the country’s “Florence Nightingale.” She was known as
“Pepa” by her friends. As a social worker, she rendered service to war
casualties together with other women she organized. Pepa together with her
husband Antonio Escoda gave food to Filipino and American soldiers who were
fighting in the frontline. Both of them are held captive and it is said that Pepa
didn’t stop helping other Filipinos in the prison. In January 1945, she and her
husband were executed by the Japanese.
Gliceria Marella Villavicencio was an ilustrado who was given a title
Madrina-General de las Fuerzas Revolucionarios (Matriarchal-General of the
Revolutionary Forces) on June 12, 1898 for her heroic participation in the
revolutionary movement. She helped disseminate pamphlets and copies of La
Solidaridad along with her husband, Eulilo Villavicencio. She also donated her
residence and her ship, Bulusan to support the revolutionary.
These heroes may not be well-known, but let us not forget the great
deeds and sacrifices they made for our nation. And they deserve the same
recognition with those with big names like Rizal and Mabini.

BILLY AND HIS NIGHTMARE No. of Words: 365

Richalle Ann P. Lim

Billy is a smart and active student but one thing you can never like about
him is his habit of littering.
One time, he was asked by his teacher to clean the room. Billy swept
the floor but he was thinking of what to do with the trash. Near their classroom
was a creek. Billy went out of the room and dumped the garbage there without
any second thought. His classmate saw him. “Why did you throw the garbage
there?” he asked. “Don’t worry. The water will just carry them away. And what
do you care, by the way” he replied arrogantly. “Be careful, nature might get
back on you,” his classmate exclaimed. Billy ignored him.
Billy decided to rest for a while because he felt tired. While resting, he
opened a lollipop he bought earlier and threw the wrapper outside the room. A
janitor saw him.
“Young man, don’t you know where to throw your trash properly?” the
man asked.
Instead of picking up the trash, Billy said arrogantly, “That’s just one
wrapper, sir. It won’t do you any harm!”
“One wrapper is enough to pollute the environment, young man”
explained the man. Billy ignored him and walked away.
Billy fell asleep inside the classroom. Immediately, he woke up realizing
that he was still in the classroom all alone. He decided to go home but it
became darker and a heavy rain came. Because of the heavy rain, he noticed
the water on the creek started to overflow. Suddenly, he saw the trash he had
thrown on the creek filling the room until he almost was drowned.
Billy was even more shocked when he saw a bunch of people that
looked exactly like him. They were throwing wrappers of candy at him! He
screamed and called for help. All of a sudden, he was awakened with his own
noise and realized it was just a bad dream. He hurried home and thought,
“Those trash.”
Next morning, he went to the creek and picked up those junk that he
dumped. Billy, realizing his fault, also apologized to the janitor.
From then on, Billy became responsible and started helping taking care of
by keeping it clean.

MY MOTHER IS A TEACHER No. of Words: 464

Richalle Ann P. Lim

My mother is a teacher. As her child, I am able to observe all of her

daily routine as a teacher. After preparing our dinner, my mother is always in
a hurry to her study table to write lesson plans. After that, she creates and
produces her own visual aids and then jots down sensible questions for her
lesson the next day. Then, she checks and records the score of the outputs of
her students. She has almost 250 students that’s why it takes a lot of time to
do these stuff. She’s lucky enough to sleep early if she’s able to finish her
task before midnight. Then she wakes up early to prepare breakfast for us
and she’s required to go to school early for the flag ceremony.
My mother is a student. Even though teachers are already equipped
with knowledge, learning should be continuous for them. This profession also
requires that teachers never cease to study. She spends her weekend in
school not to teach but to study.
My mother is also a nurse, a counselor, a tutor, a mother, and a friend
to her student. They say that a teacher is not just a teacher. They can also
fulfill other jobs for their students.
She’s always busy most of the time that we seldom spend time
together. I know she’s always tired especially during sleepless nights. I know
that she strives harder than any other worker. But despite of it, she’s still
dedicated in her job. I really don’t understand how much dedication she puts
in her job.
One time, I was given a chance to chat with my mother for a while. I
had a chance to express what I feel about her job. Then, I ask her about her
profession. She stared at me then answered, “I have decided to become a
teacher not only because of monetary consideration or the prestige of this
profession but I preferred to be a high school teacher because it is the
fulfillment of my childhood dream. I have a chance to impart my knowledge to
my students and open their eyes to the golden rule of life. I have a chance to
lead a wayward youth to his right path and I could save a few misguided
souls from the clutches and evils of life. My greatest reward in my profession
is my students; knowing that I am a part of their success in life. Even though I
find difficulties to my assigned task, but I consider it a challenge on my part
because I love being with my students. They made me alive and active all
day long.”
From then on, I never ask my mother again.
I am Venus, 25 years old, a teacher at San Diego National High
School.

In spite of the modern technology that we have today, still there are
many people who are left behind, homeless and depressed. A lot of foolishness
still surmount in the street.
Maybe, my eyes work like a movie camera seeing the cinematic angle
of everyday life. I observe a lot of “desperate” scene on my way to school daily.
I don’t know if my observation is also your observation. Of course, a lot of
questions come into my mind on the different walks of life.
Have you ever seen those street children every day? Have you ever
shared even a single penny to them? What did you feel when you give them a
little bit of help such as foods, clothes and small amount of money for their
basic needs? Is this enough to give them money as sort of aids? I don’t know
how long they will stay that way. Begging alms to everyone comes as the
source of their income.
How could these group of people elevate from their current state of
living? Is there any hope for them that life will be better soon? How could it be?
If they are always begging alms and do nothing. Who will help them to improve
their life? Who is responsible for their present situation, the government or
themselves?
The question is, how could we push them to work for themselves if they
are used to ask alms for their living? How could they find a good job if they are
not a graduate of any course? How could they have a shelter if they haven’t
any amount from their pockets? These hanging questions are always blowing
in the wind.
Thus, I realized how blessed I am. From that day on, I promised to
myself that I would not be like them. I will study hard in order to finish my studies
and find a good job to have a stable life ahead.

LOLONG: WORLD’S LARGEST No. of Words: 230

Ruth R. De Leon

According to the Guinness Book of World record, Lolong , a salt

water crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) from the Philippines holds the title of the
world’s largest crocodile in the captivity. He measures 6.17 m (20 ft 3 in), and
weigh 1,075 kg (2,370 lb) from snout-to-tail and estimated to be at least 50
years old.
Lolong was caught in Bunawan creek in the province of Agusan del
Sur last September 3, 2011. The giant crocodile was hunted over a period of
three weeks. Once it was found, it took around 100 people to bring him onto
land. He became aggressive at several points during the capture, and twice
broke restraining ropes before eventually being properly secured.
Lolong was suspected as killer of the lost fisherman in Bunawan, as well
as the 12 year old girl whose head was found missing. He was also accused
for the missing water buffaloes in the nearby area.
The animal was named after Ernesto "Lolong" Goloran Cañete one of
the veteran crocodile hunters from the Palawan Crocodile and Wildlife
Reservation Center, who led the hunt.
In November 2011, Australian crocodile expert Dr. Adam Britton
of National Geographic sedated and measured Lolong in his enclosure and
confirmed him as the world's largest crocodile ever caught and placed in
captivity.
Lolong died in captivity at around 8 pm on 10 February 2013
from pneumonia and cardiac arrest.
By June 2017, Lolong's remains were moved to the National Museum of
