TECHNOLOGY AND CARE
1.Look at the Screen Shots and read the description of the computerized Health Probe Patient
Information Manager, at: http://www.healthprobe.com/
While doing so, imagine yourself filling in the screens when at the bedside of a client. What steps would
you take to ensure that you enter the data accurately yet make your client feel cared for?
- While doing your data collection you can sit down near at the patient. Gain trust Show respect
and treat each person with compassion and without judgment and to ensure that the data is
accurate you can summarize it in front of the patient and always acknowledge their feelings.
1. Within the clinical setting, notice the various types of technology and computers used by nurses and
other health care professionals. If you can, notice how the clients react to the technology. Does it aid or
impede client care? What level of technological competency is needed by the nurse to ensure that the
client gets the attention they need?
- Nurses use computers to schedule staff, for timekeeping, to order medications or supplies, and
for research and email. In some organizations, nurses use computers for all patient care
documentation, using systems called electronic health records or electronic medical records
- Mastery of basic computer competencies. Nurses need basic computer skills to assist patients.
Comprehension of information literacy. The ability to recognize when information is needed and
to be able to locate, evaluate and use the information as necessary. Also Understanding
information management literacy Information management is the process of collecting,
processing, presenting and communicating data as knowledge or information.
2. Visualize the process of telenursing and telemedicine. List the pros and cons of providing client care
from a distance using technology to connect to your clients.
- Telenursing allows patients to connect with their nurses through mobile devices, computers,
mobile apps, video technology, and remote patient monitoring. Nurses use a variety of tools
when providing care through telenursing. They can send information to their patients through
apps or websites. Telemedicine is defined as the delivery of healthcare services using
telecommunications. It helps doctors evaluate and treat patients without an in-person visit.
Telehealth Pros
a) What is facilitated?
- Audio and video technology can facilitate remote home health monitoring between patients and
caregivers. Often, peripheral devices placed in patients' homes such as thermometers,
sphygmomanometers, and stethoscopes are connected to the telehealth equipment so
telenurses can monitor clinical signs remotely.
b) What is impeded?
- There are barriers for telemedicine: money, regulations, hype, adoption, technology, evidence,
and success. Some of these are shared with health care in general and some are new kinds of
barriers that accompany the transformation of health care by telemedicine.
c) What is missing?
d) Is anything added that is not available in routine health care in an agency or clinic?
3. Reflect on how you (or nurses you see) demonstrate caring for your client as you learn to
use/competently use the following common technologies:
a) Electronic thermometer
- Clean the tip with cold water and soap, then rinse it.
- Turn the thermometer on.
- Put the tip under your tongue, towards the back of your mouth.
- Close your lips around the thermometer.
- Wait until it beeps or flashes.
- Check the temperature on the display.
b) Glucometer
c) IV Pump
- An infusion pump is a medical device that delivers fluids, such as nutrients and medications, into
a patient's body in controlled amounts. They can deliver nutrients or medications, such as
insulin or other hormones, antibiotics, chemotherapy drugs, and pain relievers.
d) PCA Pump
- Analgesic infusion pump often referred to as PCA pump is an electronic micro processing
machine which can be programmed to deliver a prescribed amount of medication on demand,
at specified intervals, by activation pressing of a button.
e) Holter Monitor
- A Holter monitor is a small, wearable device that keeps track of your heart rhythm. Your doctor
may want you to wear a Holter monitor for one to two days. During that time, the device
records all of your heartbeats.
f) EEG monitor
- The EEG is used to evaluate several types of brain disorders. When epilepsy is present, seizure
activity will appear as rapid spiking waves on the EEG. People with lesions of their brain, which
can result from tumors or stroke, may have unusually slow EEG waves, depending on the size
and the location of the lesion.
- A computerized medication monitoring system for alerting and warning of potential adverse
drug reactions is described. The system integrates computerized data on each hospital patient
medications, clinical laboratory, blood gas, ECG, Allergies, diagnosis, etc.
h) Computerized Charting
- The main functions of a chart are to display data and invite further exploration of a topic. Charts
are used in situations where a simple table won't adequately demonstrate important
relationships or patterns between data points.
4. Recalling the slides you viewed in Preparation assignment #1 (Patient Information Manager) list the
behaviors and competencies you would need to use such a system and still show quality caring for your
client. Why is computer literacy an important part of caring and technology?
- safe and quality nursing care, communication, collaboration and teamwork, health education,
legal responsibility, ethico moral responsibility, personal and professional development, quality
improvement, research, management of resources and environment, and record management
- Although nurses do not need a high degree of computer expertise, their performance will be
much more efficient if they have good computer skills. In other words, nurses who operate
computers proficiently can quickly access health care-related information using computers. Also,
Solid level of computer literacy creates a reliable and efficient background for everyday activities
of healthcare professionals, enables the application of further domain-specific training modules
and prepares suitable environments for the introduction and acceptance of new technologies
such as electronic health
1. Reflect on how you can cultivate caring and technological competence in your practice.
2. How do the C.R.N.B.C. Standards of Nursing Practice guide you in your use of technology coupled with
caring behaviors and presence?
- It provides information also give me knowledge and guide me to enhance my skills to use
technology while caring patients and also guide me as a future nurse for what attitude or
behaviors I need to practice.
3. Will you be able to give quality care in the future if you do not develop technological competence?
- Maybe but not like fast as technology can specially nowadays, we are in the middle of the
pandemic and not all patient can accommodate what if in the future we face bigger than that?
We need technology for medicine and healthcare, digital technology could help transform
unsustainable healthcare systems into sustainable ones, equalize the relationship between
medical professionals and patients, provide cheaper, faster and more effective solutions for
diseases.
