Birthday Gift
By: Marites S. Galvez
My sister Jane was 14 and I was 10 years old. For us, occasions like birthdays are
something to be remembered and look forward to.
3
Our Mother’s birthday is fast approaching and so we were planning to give her each a gift
separately. We will surprise her on that day. We have saved enough money from our baon to
buy her a special gift.
Every day was like a quest and a game of secrecy, each of us was thinking and looking
for a unique gift that will make our mother happy. These past few days, we noticed that she
looked haggard and seldom smiled or laugh. We thought that she seemed unhappy maybe
because of the hard work at home. She does all the work because father also works in the
field. She works all day, cooking, cleaning, washing the clothes and ironing them too.
For the next few days we became involved in a competition of which of our gift will be most
appreciated and liked. I bought a silver loop earring for her because I saw that the ones she
wears were already faded. Sister Jane did not want to reveal her gift but she is happy with the
gift that I have for mother.
The day came, we woke up and saw mother washing our uniform because we only have
two sets of uniform. Mother was just handwashing them because we do not have washing
machine.
We greeted her a happy birthday in chorus as we kissed her cheek. Father gave her
flowers and a small box which we thought was a necklace because mother does not own one.
Then I gave her mine, I saw how my mother’s eyes twinkle and glistened with tears. Sister
Jane went upstairs to get her gift. When she came back, she was carrying a pail, a piece of
smooth rectangular wood and a brush. Suddenly, other’s eyes got sad and her tears fell.
When my sister saw that, she ran into her room and cried too because she felt her gift was
not appreciated. Mother felt guilty and so she followed her upstairs.
“Why did you choose those things as presents for me? Didn’t you know that it feels like I
am your maid? They remind me of the hard work that I regularly do”, she asked.
“Mother, you did not let me talk and say my piece first before showing your reaction”, sister
Jane answered.
“I bought them not to remind you of your work, instead, I will make an announcement that
from now on I will be the one to wash our clothes,” she added.
In an instant, mother cried and hugged my sister so tight.
“How insensitive of me, my child, I never thought that what comes from the gift you gave
me is more than what I expected and more precious than any material things”.
“But I don’t think that you can wash the clothes on your own dear, you can help me
instead”, Mother said lovingly.
“Thank you all very much, you made my birthday the most memorable one,” she added.
Our day ended into a sumptuous dinner. Father ordered food from a nearby restaurant to
save our mother from getting tired on her special day. We all had a very nice day because we
made her happy on this day.

What is It
Cause-Effect relationship describes something that happens and why it happens. What
happens is called the effect and why it happens is the cause. In other words, cause is the
reason and effect is the result.
Example: .
Kevin removed his jacket because it was too warm inside the room.
There are three main types of linking words that are used to show cause and effect
relationship: conjunctions, transitions, and prepositions.
1. Conjunctions
The most important conjunctions are because, as, since, and so. “Because”, “as”, and
“since” introduce a cause; “so” introduces an effect. These are used to join two
complete sentences (or independent clauses) together. They are often used like this:
For example:
You can also reverse the order of the sentences with because, as, and since.
For example:
Because it was raining, I stayed at home. (use a comma between the first and second
clauses)
Note that this is not possible with “so”.
5
2. Transitions
The most important transitions are therefore, consequently, and as a result. All of
these introduce an effect. These are used to join two complete sentences (or
independent clauses) together. They are often used like this:
For example:
3. Prepositions
The most important prepositions are due to and because of. Both of these introduce
a cause in the form of a noun phrase. They are often used like this:
For example:
I stayed at home due to the rain.
Or:
Because of the rain, I stayed at home.
The key difference between standard essays and cause and effect essays is that cause and
effect composition addresses topics or problems by outlining the causes and effects, or
reasons and results, of several components of a topic.
Cause and effect essays or paragraphs are generally organized by problems, outcomes, and
possible solutions.

A. Directions: Read the paragraph carefully. Check ☑ all the possible causes from the given
effect.
Mrs. Flores is a grade 6 teacher at Baliwag North Central School. She is well
respected in her chosen field. Parents, colleagues, pupils and almost everyone in the

Farming is a full-time job. Crops need to be tended well, from tilling the land to taking
care of them until they are fully-grown and ready to harvest. Farmers are overworked,
stressed and even depressed when things get rough. The lack of rain sometimes, the
numerous typhoon that hits the country, the insects and floods are the enemies of the
farmers.
5. Farmers are affected with all the calamities that hit their crops.
6. Farming is never an important factor that will affect the economy of the
country.

Independent Assessment 1
Directions: Read the paragraph carefully. Choose the five sentences that show cause and
effect relationship. Write them on your answer sheet.
Headaches
Many people often get headaches. Headaches have several causes. There is a strong
evidence that suggests that diet and environment are possible factors of headaches. Lack of
sleep and rest may result to getting headaches. When a person is hungry he might get
headaches too. Some people get headaches because they are dependent on caffeine. Other
people may be allergic to salt or may have low blood sugar. Still, other people are allergic to
household chemicals including polishes, waxes, bug killers and paints. If they manage to avoid
these, their headaches tend to go away. When a person has recurring headaches, it is best
to see a doctor.

Early Bird
By: Marites S. Galvez
Abby’s cellphone alarm clock rang at 5 o’ clock in the morning so she hurriedly got up from
her bed. It’s the first day of school that’s why she doesn’t want to be late. She went downstairs
to eat her breakfast. She took a bath and went upstairs. Then as she was about to dress up
she saw that her bed was not yet made up so she tidied it up.
Mother laid all her school uniforms on her bed so Abby can dress herself fast. She dressed
up, off she goes and waved her mother good bye. Suddenly she went back, she forgot her
bag! When so looked down at her feet, she also saw that she still wore her slippers instead of
her shoes. She put on her shoes and tighten the shoelaces so that they will not be untied.
Hurriedly, Abby just walked in going to school because she has no extra money to pay her
fare. It seemed like she was going on a race. Punctuality was one of her many good traits. As
expected, she was the first to arrive among her classmates. Last year she received the Early
Bird Award because she was always the first to come in class.
