Lesson Geometric Sequence and Means

REVIEW
The word sequence means an order in which one thing follows another in
succession. The previous lesson focused on arithmetic sequence. Arithmetic
sequence is sequence whose terms are found by adding a constant value (the
common difference) to each previous term. Let’s try to study the example below.

Example 1: Determine whether each sequence is arithmetic. If so, find the common
difference for each of the arithmetic sequences.

A. 2, 5, 8, 11, …
B. 2, -4, 8, -16, …
C. 6, 3, 0, -3, …
D. 1, 3, 9, 27, …

Solution (A): 2, 5, 8, 11, …

Label the terms. 𝑎1 = 2, 𝑎2 = 5, 𝑎3 = 8, 𝑎4 = 11

Find the difference (𝑑 = 𝑎𝑛+1 − 𝑎𝑛 ). 𝑑 = 𝑎2 − 𝑎1 = 5 − 2 = 3
Check that the difference of the 𝑑 = 𝑎3 − 𝑎2 = 8 − 5 = 3
next successive pairs of terms is 3. 𝑑 = 𝑎4 − 𝑎3 = 11 − 8 = 3

There is a common difference of 3. Therefore, this sequence is an arithmetic and each

successive term is found by adding 3 to the previous term.

Solution (B): 2, -4, 8, -16, …

Label the terms. 𝑎1 = 2, 𝑎2 = −4, 𝑎3 = 8, 𝑎4 = −16

Find the difference (𝑑 = 𝑎𝑛+1 − 𝑎𝑛 ). 𝑑 = 𝑎2 − 𝑎1 = −4 − 2 = −6
Check that the difference of the next 𝑑 = 𝑎3 − 𝑎2 = 8 − −4 = 12
successive pairs of terms is -6. 𝑑 = 𝑎4 − 𝑎3 = −16 − 8 = −24

There is no common difference. Therefore, this sequence is not an arithmetic.

5
Solution (C): 6, 3, 0, -3, …

Label the terms. 𝑎1 = 6, 𝑎2 = 3, 𝑎3 = 0, 𝑎4 = −3

Find the difference (𝑑 = 𝑎𝑛+1 − 𝑎𝑛 ). 𝑑 = 𝑎2 − 𝑎1 = 3 − 6 = −3
Check that the difference of the next 𝑑 = 𝑎3 − 𝑎2 = 0 − 3 = −3
successive pairs of terms is -3. 𝑑 = 𝑎4 − 𝑎3 = −3 − 0 = −3

There is a common difference of -3. Therefore, this sequence is an arithmetic and

each successive term is found by adding -3 to the previous term.

Solution (D): 1, 3, 9, 27, …

Label the terms. 𝑎1 = 1, 𝑎2 = 3, 𝑎3 = 9, 𝑎4 = 27

Find the difference (𝑑 = 𝑎𝑛+1 − 𝑎𝑛 ). 𝑑 = 𝑎2 − 𝑎1 = 3 − 1 = 2
Check that the difference of the 𝑑 = 𝑎3 − 𝑎2 = 9 − 3 = 6
next successive pairs of terms is 2. 𝑑 = 𝑎4 − 𝑎3 = 27 − 9 = 18

There is no common difference. Therefore, this sequence is not an arithmetic.

Since A and C of example 1 have a common difference which have a pattern of adding
3 and −3 respectively. What pattern can you deduce for the sequence of B and D?

GEOMETRIC SEQUENCE
In example 1, you can classify the sequences according to whether it’s an
arithmetic or not. A and C are arithmetic sequences since successive terms had a
common difference. In this module, you will learn about another type of sequence:
geometric sequence, where successive terms have common ratio. In other words,
each term is found by multiplying the previous term by the same constant.

The sequences B and D in example 1 are geometric because each successive

term is found by multiplying the previous term by -2 and 3 respectively.

6
Let’s see this!

Solution (B): 2, -4, 8, -16, … Solution (D): 1, 3, 9, 27, …

2 ∙ (−2) = −4 1 ∙ (3) = 3

−4 ∙ (−2) = 8 3 ∙ (3) = 9

8 ∙ (−2) = −16 9 ∙ (3) = 27

The General (𝒏𝒕𝒉 ) Term of a Geometric Sequence
In order to find a formula for the general, 𝑛𝑡ℎ , term of a geometric sequence,
write out the first several terms and look for a pattern.

Let’s see this!

First term, 𝑛 = 1 𝑎1
Second term, 𝑛 = 2 𝑎2 = 𝑎1 ∙ 𝑟
Third term, 𝑛 = 3 𝑎3 = 𝑎2 ∙ 𝑟 = (𝑎1 ∙ 𝑟) ∙ 𝑟 = 𝑎1 ∙ 𝑟 2
Fourth term, 𝑛 = 4 𝑎4 = 𝑎3 ∙ 𝑟 = (𝑎1 ∙ 𝑟 2 ) ∙ 𝑟 = 𝑎1 ∙ 𝑟 3

Therefore, the 𝑛𝑡ℎ term is given by 𝑎𝑛 = 𝑎1 ∙ 𝑟 𝑛−1 .

The 𝑛𝑡ℎ Term of a Geometric Sequence

The 𝑛𝑡ℎ term of a geometric sequence with common ratio 𝑟 is given by
𝑎𝑛 = 𝑎1 ∙ 𝑟 𝑛−1 for 𝑛 ≥ 1.

GEOMETRIC MEAN
Inserting a certain number of terms between two given terms of a geometric
sequence is called geometric means.

2, ___, ___, ___, 32

Identify the number of terms, 1st term and 𝑛 = 5, 𝑎1 = 2 and 𝑎5 = 32

the 5th term.

If 𝑟 = −2, the geometric means are 𝑎2 = −4, 𝑎3 = 8, 𝑎4 = −16. Thus, the sequence is

If 𝑟 = 3, the geometric means are 𝑎2 = 12, 𝑎3 = 36, 𝑎4 = 108, 𝑎5 = 324. Thus, the

6. Insert four (4) terms between 1 and 243 of a geometric sequence.

GENERALIZATION
In this module, geometric sequences was discussed, in which the n th term is
given by 𝑎𝑛 = 𝑎1 ∙ 𝑟 𝑛−1 for 𝑛 ≥ 1. Each successive term is found by multiplying the
previous term by a constant, so that 𝑎𝑛+1 = 𝑟 ∙ 𝑎𝑛 . The constant, 𝑟, is called the
common ratio. Furthermore, inserting a certain number of terms between two given
terms of a geometric sequence is called geometric means.

A question and solution is presented below and some part of it is wrong. You
need to identify the mistake and explain briefly why is it wrong.

Find the missing terms in the geometric sequence.

5, ___, ___, ___, 80, …

Identify the number of terms, 1st term and the 𝑛 = 5, 𝑎1 = 5 and 𝑎5 = 80

5th term.
Substitute 𝑛 = 5, 𝑎1 = 5 and 𝑎5 = 80 into 5 = 80 ∙ (𝑟)5−1
𝑎𝑛 = 𝑎1 ∙ 𝑟 𝑛−1 .

13
Solve for 𝑟. 4 80
𝑟= √ =2

If 𝑟 = 2, therefore 𝑎2 = 10, 𝑎3 = 20, 𝑎4 = 30.
