2.4 XRIO Converter

The Test Object contains the 7SL8x XRIO Converter, which includes setting parameters of the modelled
protection relay. The setting parameters are built as an image of the Digsi5 V07.80 software. In this
chapter, the specifics of the sections Diff Topology and Additional Information\Settings Remote Relay
the are described. General information about the converter structure can be found in the OMICRON PTL
user manual.

2.4.1 Diff Topology

The Diff Topology block contains the parameter Local device is device (DIGSI Addr. 31.5131.101). If
your local relay under test is “1”, choose “1”. If your local relay under test is not “1”, choose “2” (Figure 2).

Figure 2: Diff Topology

2.4.2 Additional Information

Settings Remote Relay
Certain parameters of the remote relay have to be entered in the Additional Information\Settings
Remote Relay (Figure 3). The parameters Threshold Idiff> and Threshold Idiff fast are automatically
calculated according to the settings of the local relay and the current transformer of the remote relay. The
correct parameters are important for end to end tests of the differential protection function.

2.5 Specific Protection Test

In this chapter the specific protection tests, which are not covered by the OMICRON PTT user manual,
are described.

2.5.1 Line Differential Protection

Communication Check
An Annunciation Checker test module is used to guide the tester through the process of checking the Line
Differential protection communications. Please follow the instructions given by the Test Navigator. The
Annunciation Checker test has to be assessed manually.

Line Differential Pickup Test

The Line Differential pickup test has to be performed with active communication. Each relay (local and
remote) has to be tested independently. During the test of one relay it has to be ensured that the remote
end does not measure any current. The pulsed currents are ramped until the differential protection picks
up. The pickup value is assessed.

Line Differential Trip Time Test

The Line Differential Trip Time Test simulates a fault on the line protected with the Line Differential
protection. A relay trip is expected. The trip time is assessed.

Line Differential External Fault

The State Sequencer test module is used to test the stability of the Line Differential function for through
fault conditions. The local and the remote relay are involved in these end to end type tests. To
synchronize the test signals of both ends, CMGPS 588 is required. The corresponding test modules for
relay 1 and relay 2 need to be opened and then run simultaneously on both sides.

A fault outside the protection area located at side 2 followed by a fault outside the protection area located
at side 1 is simulated. Both relays must not send a trip signal during the tests.

Line Differential Operating Characteristic

The Diff Operating Characteristic test module is used to test the operating characteristic of the Line
Differential function. The local and the remote relay are involved in these end to end type tests. To
synchronize the test signals of both ends, CMGPS 588 is required. The corresponding test modules for
relay 1 and relay 2 need to be opened and then run simultaneously on both sides.

Please check and adjust the test points to fit your application. Please make sure, that the same test points
are used in the corresponding test modules for both relays.

3.5 Automatic Reclosing Function

The RST-templates provide tests for a 1-/3-pole automatic reclosing (AR) mode using a protection area of
100% line length. This may be a differential protection function or an overreaching zone of a distance
protection function. The templates have to be adapted, if you are using a different application concerning
mode or additional signals, e.g. a CB ready signal or CB aux. contacts.

Important: The Iterative Closed-Loop simulation method of RelaySimTest is used for testing the AR
function. Further information can be found in the RelaySimTest help.

3.5.1 General Test Case Settings

The following parameters have to be entered in the test case view for the automatic reclosing test cases:

Measurement RST Test Case Setting Relay Parameter

Trip times Set assessment conditions/ Line/21 Distance prot./AR zone 1/Operate
Trip time A, B, C delay 1-phase/multi-ph. (dependent on the
fault type)
Reclaim time Simulation test settings/ Circuit breaker/79 Auto. reclosing/
Pause/Defined pause before General/Reclai. time aft.succ.cyc.
each test step
Dead time(s) Set assessment conditions/ Circuit breaker/79 Auto. reclosing/
Dead time cycle # Cycle #/Dead time aft. 1-/3-pole trip
(dependent on the fault type)

3.5.2 AR with 1 Cycle

The AR function with 1 cycle is tested with faults at 100% line length (resp. on both line ends for end-to-
end tests). The phase-selective trip signals and the close command signal of the relay are measured and
assessed.
In the AR successful test, the line fault extinguishes after a time delay of 100 ms. In the AR unsuccessful
test, the fault remains until the end of the test.

3.5.3 AR with 2 Cycles

The AR function with 2 cycles is tested with faults at 100% line length (resp. on both line ends for end-to-
end tests).. The phase-selective trip signals and the close command signal of the relay are measured and
assessed.
In the AR successful after cycle 1 test, the line fault extinguishes after a time delay of 100 ms. In the AR
successful after cycle 2 test, the line fault has to extinguish during the second interruption. Therefore, the
"Delay since previous event" (see Figure 7) for the line fault 1 inactive event is dependent on the dead
time of the first AR cycle and has to be set manually. In the AR unsuccessful test, the fault remains until
the end of the test.

Example for AR successful after cycle 2 test for 1-pole-fault:

Delay since previous event =
Cycle 1/Dead time aft. 1-pole trip time + 200 ms = 500 ms + 200 ms = 700 ms

Figure 7: Fault settings

3.5.4 AR with Distance Cross-Check

For cross-checking an AR distance zone, the power system has to be extended by a following line. The
tests have to be created manually.

3.6 Teleprotection with Distance Protection

The RST-templates include tests for the teleprotection with distance protection function and the following
modes:
• Permissive Underreach Transfer Trip (PUTT)
• Permissive Overreach Transfer Trip (POTT)
• Blocking Method

The following parameters have to be entered in the test case view for the teleprotection test cases:

Test Case Measurement RST Test Case Setting Relay Parameter

Fault on Trip time relay 1 Set assessment conditions/ <Operate delay of reverse zone>
Busbar 1 Trip time - Relay 1
Trip time relay 2 Set assessment conditions/ Line/21 Distance prot./Z2/
Trip time - Relay 2 Operate delay

Busbar 2 Trip time - Relay 1 Operate delay
Trip time relay 2 Set assessment conditions/ < Operate delay of reverse zone >
Trip time - Relay 2
Fault on Trip time relay 1 Set assessment conditions/ Line/21 Distance prot./Z1(Z1B)/
Line, 0%, Trip time - Relay 1 Operate delay
50%, 100% Trip time relay 2 Set assessment conditions/ Line/85-21 <teleprotection
Trip time - Relay 2 mode>/Operate delay (multi-ph.)

The teleprotection with distance protection function is tested with significant faults at the following
locations:
• Busbar 1
• Busbar 2
• Line, 0%
• Line, 50%
• Line, 100%

The trip signals and the send signal of the relay are measured and assessed according to the expected
relay behavior of the teleprotection mode.

Important: The Iterative Closed-Loop simulation method of RelaySimTest is disabled for testing the
teleprotection function. With Iterative Closed-Loop enabled, please adjust the trip time assessments for
the “Fault on Busbar” test cases according to your application (iterative tripping of relay 1 and relay 2
possible). Further information about Iterative Closed-Loop can be found in the RelaySimTest help.
