Lesson 1.4 Linear Relationships: Honors Precalculus 1.4 Notes

1) Bruce accidentally runs in the wrong direction from his house. After 30 minutes he is 6.25 miles away, determining his speed is 2.5 mph and pace is 12 minutes per mile. 2) A graph would show distance from home on the vertical axis and time on the horizontal axis. Bruce would be 15 miles away after another 15 minutes at the same pace. 3) After realizing his mistake 45 minutes into his run, Bruce turns around. He was then 7.5 miles from home. The time to reach home can be predicted with an equation relating time and distance from home.

Lesson 1.4 Linear Relationships

HW: pg 199: 73-85 odd

Pg 211: 1-19 odd (Don’t do the “discussion” questions)

Bruce is 5 miles from his house when his mom texts him and says he needs to get home ASAP. Being an
ultra-marathoner, he starts his timer and GPS and starts heading home. BUT in the excitement, he
accidentally heads the wrong way! After a ¼ of an hour running, he checks his GPS and sees that he is now
6.25 miles from home.

Determine his speed in miles per hour:_______________________________

Determine his pace in minutes per mile:______________________________

Using the graph, plot his actions. Use the vertical axis to represent________________________ and the horizontal
axis to represent ________________________________.

Assuming he doesn’t realize his mistake, predict where he will be after

running 15 more minutes:

Now, write a relationship that will predict where he will be at any time
(he still doesn’t realize his mistake and is happily running along).

Realizing his mistake 45 minutes into his run, he turns around immediately, resets his watch and GPS, and
heads toward home at his same pace (he’s an ultra-marathoner, remember).

Where is he when he realizes his mistake?

Predict the time it will take for Bruce to reach home.

Write an equation that will allow him to predict how far from home
he will be at any time on his way back:

Some Miscellaneous facts about linear relationships:

Vertical lines have _________________ slope.

function graphically show the rate of change.
