1. Compare perceptions of critical care from the viewpoints of student, nurse, multi-
professional healthcare team, patient, and family. What are the similarities and
difference?
a. Comparing the viewpoints shows that all viewpoints work to improve the health
of the patient, and to also enhance the quality care that is being given to the
patient to not only promote quality care but to help the patient make a faster
recovery. But if there is similarities there are also difference such as for the
patient which is more focus on interpersonal skill rather than technical skills, and
for the nurse, which focuses more on support, comfort and assurance as well as
sharing information regarding the patient to the S.O, for the family perception is
to monitor the patient’s progression of health and whether the patient is getting
the right information and care consistently throughout. For the multi-
professional team, it is perceived to promote and implement palliative care in
which focuses more on specialized medical care for people living with a serious
illness.
2. Provide examples of strategies to improve communication and collaboration among the
multi-professional team members in critical care.
a. For the examples to improve communication and collaboration among multi
professional team, one is the SBAR in which is a tool provided to aid in
facilitating and strengthening communication between nurses and prescribers
throughout the implementation of quality improvement of the patient’s health.
One good example of improving communication and collaboration is simply
training or simulations, to further enhance good professional team skills is
repetition.
3. Debate the pros and cons of hiring new graduates to work in a critical care unit.
a. For the pros for hiring new graduates is that their desire for work and to learn
more, for a newly graduate which should be more inclined to constructive
criticism, and as well as for newly graduates are more willing to undergo
internship or residency. For the cons, this the newly graduate nurse is still in
need to master their assessment and decision-making skills and it should be
done in lesser population of patient which lessen the impact of errors due to
lesser patients.
4. Identify and debate strategies for reducing stress and anxiety of critical care nurses
a. One good strategy to reduce stress and anxiety is to be more active in physical
movement, exercise and diet is one way to mitigate stress and anxiety, as well as
socializing after shift is a great way of reducing stress, also a good change of pace
regarding the work environment is also a way to reduce anxiety for the nurse’s
work ethic, being able to focus more on the change of environment than the
work itself.
5. Envision the critical care unit of the future. Describe the environment and how care
could be delivered.
a. For the critical care unit of the future, one could be the increase usage of
telemedicine, more computerized healthcare providing techniques which can
affect care delivery, by effective usage of this technology not only envisions the
future but as well as proving a more organized and efficient way of taking care of
a patient. Also, when envisioning the future for critical care unit, a change in the
environment can also be an option, for it can reduce stress for the patient and
their S.O, an environment that can improve sleep and rest period, a place where
noise is more negatable and an environment where equipment is more readily
available for the patient. One example as well is the laboratory test as to how
and when, we could see a future where x-rays can be taken not in a x – ray but in
the patient’s room as well
Reflection
One article by Mozhgan S., et al (2021) which was titled “Oncology Nurses' Needs
Respecting Healthy Work Environment in Iran: A Descriptive Exploratory Study” which talked
how unpleasant it is in an oncology nurses’ setting and how limited information is about their
perspective on healthy work environment, it was concluded that a wide range of physical–
structural, mental health, organizational, and sociocultural improvements should be made to
oncology nurses' work environment in order to fulfill their health working environment- related
needs. After reading the article I understood that having a healthy working environment is
different depending on what the environment is. The environment must reach certain
requirement to be had. After that, optimal outcomes and clinical excellence can be achieved.
After analyzing both figure and the article I have determined that even if the change of
environment is different depending on its current environment, once optimal healthy work
environment is reached, a higher quality of care can be given and more efficient way of giving
care to the patient and so on, not only for the patient’s care but for the overall satisfaction of
the nursing team will greatly benefit giving care to the patient due to a more optimal
environment for the nursing team.
I therefore conclude that in both the study that I have seen and the figure that is shown,
having a healthy work environment not only promotes better and efficient patient care, but
also boost many traits needed of a nursing team, having both in its peak condition helps to
provide the best possible care given to patient in any environment it may be. I also concluded
that requirements for optimal healthy work environment is different depending on the setting,
but the outcome will still be the same, it is all to give the best possible care for the patient.
