Complex Engineering Problem

This document outlines a complex engineering problem assignment for a mechanics of materials course. Students are asked to evaluate the cross-sectional dimensions of a beam that satisfy stress conditions, exploring three cross-section types. They must select the most economical section based on weight. Students will complete the problem in groups of up to three, with their report including all analysis, sketches of selected sections, and a comment on the economical section. The assignment will be evaluated using the department rubric and counts as 5% of the total theory marks, with a submission date of February 8, 2021.

Complex Engineering Problem

CE-212 Mechanics of Materials

Statement:
For the following over hanging beam, evaluate the cross-section dimensions of a section that
satisfy the following stress conditions.
1) Maximum flexural stress is limited to 30 MPa
2) Maximum shear stress is limited to 14 MPa
Three cross-sections need to be explored. (Finally select the most economical section)
A) Rectangular cross-section having maximum depth of 450 mm
B) I-shaped section having maximum depth of 500 mm. The thickness of web and flange may
vary from 15 mm to 25 mm.
C) Hollow rectangular section of maximum width of 300 mm. Wall thickness may vary from
20 mm to 30 mm.

5 kN/m 7 kN/m
3 kN-m 2 kN-m

Note: Most economical section will be the one with lightest weight. Use density of steel equal to
7850kg/m3.
Relevant Materials:
1) Lecture notes of Mechanics of Materials (CE-212)
2) Mechanics of Materials by Andrew Pytel and Singer
3) Mechanics of Materials by Beer and Johnson
4) Mechanics of Materials by Zahid Ahmed Siddiqui

Group:
Need to submit that Problem in group, with maximum number of three students in a group.
Report:
Report should include all the analysis and evaluation calculations. Draw neat sketches of selected
cross-sections. Further, comment on the economical section.
Evaluation:
Evaluation will be done as per the standard rubric for complex engineering problem set by the
Department of Civil Engineering.
Weightage:
This assignment will include in theory with a 5% weightage (5 marks) of total marks.
