Introduction
Today’s lesson covers four main sections. We start with a look at what a business needs to consider before setting up a
network. We then look at three different network structures and evaluate them according to their advantages and
disadvantages. The final section of this lesson are two demos explaining an overview of a network architecture and how to
set up a small network using Packet Tracer.
• Cost savings
• Flexibility (with wireless computer networking employees can work remotely)
• Improved security, which is what this course is all about!
If the small business has a hybrid network, it will probably use more than one type of connecting technology or topology
So it may need the following:
• Network adapter
• Switch
• Ethernet cables
• Router
• Wireless access point
• Firewall
ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
• Security - A wired network has a lot • It is costly - it often costs a lot to run network

relativity depends on the type of
ethernet cables that are used in the
network, for example a Cat 5, Cat 5e,
Cat6, Cat 6a, or a Cat 7 to name a
few.
• There is no wireless interference. In a
high-tech environment there are a
lot of radio signals being transmitted
in the air from network devices like
extenders and repeaters. A wired
environment is not affected by these
radio wave interferences.
Wireless network
The devices in a wireless network are all connected to the internet without the use of network cables as in a wired
network. Wireless network uses access point to amplify network signals to all the areas where the network connection is
needed.
ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
• It brings convenience to the user in • It often requires a higher design specification

• It is easily scalable, for example, the
wireless signals can be easily
amplified to new areas with an
extender when needed.
Hybrid network
A hybrid network is mostly used by businesses with a larger number of employees, where there is a combination of
wireless and wired networks to form a hybrid system or network. Routers are connected to switches with ethernet cables
and the switches are connected to access points to reach areas where direct cabling cannot reach in the building. All
routers have a default gateway to the ISP.
ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
• It is a combination of wired and • It often requires a lot of planning and time to

where required.
Conclusion
Small businesses need a network to be able to share resources with one another and communicate with their potential
and current customers. We have looked at the factors to consider and benefits of computer networking.
We discussed how businesses have the option of implementing a wired, wireless, or a hybrid network and this usually
varies on the needs of the business. We evaluated each of those three network types and their respective advantages and
disadvantages.
