RMK 03 - RMK 3-Sti: IT Infrastructure and Emerging Technologies - Information Systems

IT infrastructure has evolved over 5 stages from mainframe computers to current cloud and mobile computing. Infrastructure changes are driven by developments in processing power, storage, and networking. There are 7 key infrastructure components including hardware, software, data management, and networking. Current hardware trends include mobile/wearable devices, BYOD, virtualization, cloud computing, and edge computing. Software trends involve open source, web services, and outsourced cloud software. Managing infrastructure involves addressing changes, governance, and strategic investment based on total cost of ownership.

5.1. What is Infrastructure, what are the stages and what are the triggers?

5.1.1. Definition of Information Technology Infrastructure

IT infrastructure is a shared technology resource that provides a platform for an

enterprise with specific information system applications. IT infrastructure includes
investmenthardware, software, and services such as consulting, education, and
training held companywide or across business units within the company that are
budgeted for by management and consist of both human and technical capabilities.

5.1.2. Information Technology Infrastructure Evolution

Today, IT infrastructure in organizations is the result of more than 50 years of

evolution in computing platforms. There are five stages in this evolution and each
represents a different configuration of computing power and infrastructure elements.
The five eras are mainframe computing and minicomputers, personal computers,
client/server networks, enterprise computing, and cloud and mobile computing.

5.1.3. Technology Driver for Infrastructure Evolution

IT infrastructure changes are the result of developments in computer

processing, memory chips, storage devices, telecommunications and networking
hardware and software, and software design that have increased computing
power exponentially while reducing costs exponentially. Some of the most
important developments:

Moore's Law and Microprocessing Power -- explain the exponential

increase in processing power and the exponential decrease in the cost of
computer technology.
The Law of Great Digital Deviance -- explains the exponential decline in data
storage costs.
Metcalfe Law and Network Economics -- Explaining that the increasing use
of computers indicates that the value of a network to the members of that
network increases exponentially.

5.2. Infrastructure Components

There are seven infrastructure components that are very important in supporting information
technology systems, including:

1. Computer hardware platform

2. Computer software platform

3. Enterprise software applications

4. Data management and storage

5. Network/telecommunications platforms

6. Internet platforms

7. System integration consulting and services

5.3. Current Hardware Platform Trends (Contemporary)

5.3.1. Mobile Digital Platform

Smartphones and tablets are becoming the primary means of accessing the Internet and
are increasingly being used for business computing as well as for consumer applications.
Wearable computing device(Wearable computing devices) is currently the latest addition to
mobile digital platforms, such as smartwatches, smart glasses, etc.

5.3.2. Information Technology Consumerization and BYOD

BYOD is one aspect of consumer IT, where new information technologies that first
appeared in the consumer market spread to business organizations. Consumerization of IT
includes not only mobile personal devices but also the use of software services for
businesses that come from the consumer market as well, such as Google and Yahoo
search, Gmail, Google Maps, Dropbox, and even Facebook and Twitter. The
consumerization of IT is forcing businesses, especially large corporations, to rethink the
way they acquire and manage information technology equipment and services.

5.3.3. Quantum Computing

Quantum computing uses the principles of quantum physics to represent data

and perform operations on this data.

5.3.4. Virtualization

Virtualization is the process of presenting a set of computing resources (such

as computing capabilities or data storage) so that they can be accessed in a way
that is not limited by physical configuration or geographic location. Virtualization
allows one physical resource or multiple physical resources.

5.3.5. Cloud Computing

Cloud computing is a computing model in which computer processing, storage,

software, and other services are provided as a collection of shared virtual resources
over a network, primarily the Internet. Cloud computing consists of three types of
services, namely:

Cloud infrastructure as a service -- Customers use processing, storage,

network, and other computing resources from cloud service providers to run
their information systems.
Cloud platform as a service -- Customers use infrastructure and
programming tools supported by cloud service providers to develop their
own applications.
Software as a service -- The customer uses software hosted by the vendor on
the vendor's cloud infrastructure and delivered as a service over the network.

5.3.6. Edge Computing
Edge computing is a method for optimizing a cloud computing system by performing
some data processing on a set of servers connected at the edge of the network, near the
data source.

5.3.7. Green Computing

Green computing, or green IT, refers to practices and technologies for planning,
manufacturing, using, and disposing of computers, servers, and associated devices such as
monitors, printers, storage devices, and network and communication systems to minimize
their impact on the environment.

5.3.8. High Performance and Power Saving Processor

Another way to reduce power requirements and hardware deployment is to use

more efficient and power-efficient processors. Contemporary microprocessors now
feature multiple processor cores on a single chip. A multi-core processor is an
integrated circuit to which two or more processor cores have been installed for
increased performance, reduced power consumption, and more efficient processing of
multiple tasks simultaneously.

5.4. Contemporary Software Platform Trends

There are four main themes in the evolution of contemporary software platforms:

• Linux and open source software

• Java, HTML and HTML5

• Web services and service-oriented architecture

• Outsourcing of cloud software and services

5.5. IT Infrastructure Management Problems and Solutions

Key infrastructure challenges include dealing with infrastructure changes,

agreeing on infrastructure management and governance, and investing in
infrastructure wisely. Solutions to these problems include using a competitive
forces model to determine how much to spend on IT infrastructure and where
strategic investments in infrastructure should be made, as well as calculating the
total cost of ownership of information technology assets. The total cost of
ownership of technology resources is not just the cost of hardware and software,
but also the cost of upgrading, maintaining, technical assistance, and training
hardware and software.
