Module 3 PRINCIPLES OF COUNSELING

of a situation in which practitioners of counseling work together to assist individuals, groups, or communities involved in

What is Principle?
A principle is a proposition or value that is a guide for behavior or evaluation. In law, it is a rule that has to be or
usually is to be followed, or can be desirably followed, or is an inevitable consequence of something, such as the laws
observed in nature or the way that a system is constructed (Wikipedia) It serves as the foundation for a system of belief
or behavior or for a chain of reasoning. It is morally correct behavior and attitudes.
In counseling, its practitioners are guided by the Basic Principles of Counseling that serve as their reference and basis of
theory actions, behavior and in decision making.
Counselor must be genuinely engaged in the therapeutic relationship, have unconditional positive regard, feel
empathy, and communicate these attitudes. Counseling is a process between a client and therapist to explore
difficulties, learn to see things clearly, and facilitate positive change.
1. Principles of Learning – the presence of the learning elements in the entire process are accepted and recognized.
2. Principles of Acceptance – the counselors show positive regards and accept the client irrespective of who she/he is.
The client should be given due regards= to his/her rights.
3. Principles of Permissiveness- developing optimism through professional relationship allow freedom of choice and
behavior.
4. Principle of Respect for the Individual - This is an attitude, which portrays the belief that every person is a worthy
being that is competent to decide what he or she really wants, has the potential for growth, and has the abilities to
achieve what he or she really wants from life.
5. Principle of Thinking with the Individual – It is the role of the counselor to put him/herself in the shoes of the
counselee in order to analyze his/her thoughts,
Counselors should enter the helping process with a sincere respect for their clients, an open and genuine attitude, and
intention of helping their clients to empower themselves and take responsibility for their own lives.
Counseling is handled by professionals - Counseling has made progress toward recognition as a profession at a rate
comparable with that of professionalization efforts in other mental health disciplines, such as psychology
Activity 1: Based on the Principles of Counseling, describe a counselor (pls refer to the 5 Principle of Counseling)
Based on the principles of counseling, counselors should be known how to put her/himself to the position of the client
so she/he can analyze her/his thoughts, can portray anyone’s thoughts so she/he can achieve what she/he wants, and
counselors should be a trustworthy person.
Activity 2: Roanne is a Registered Guidance Counselor of a public school. She is handling 300 Senior High School
students. One of her clients submitted herself for a counseling session. How should Roxanne handle the counseling
taking into consideration the Principles of Counseling? Choose 2 or more principles. Use separate tablet paper, to be
attached here on this module.
Activity 3: In your own opinion, what is the most important principle of a Counselor? Why this principle? What aspect
of the principle influences you? Please explain and defend your answer. Use separate tablet paper, to be attached
here on this module.
Assume that you are a counseling professional, write your own Principles of Counseling. Use first person in stating
your principle. (You based your answer on the 5 principle, just choose one )
Principles of Learning 1. The counselor acknowledges the worthiness of being that is capable of making decisions on her
own.
Principles of Permissiveness 3. Positivism is promoted that allows freedom of choice and behavior.
