Control-System Engineering (Based On VDB R170C)

The document discusses requirements for technical specifications for distributed control systems and programmable logic controllers. It outlines what should be included in the specifications such as interface definitions, I/O requirements, and process control needs. It emphasizes creating clear, structured specifications according to standards like VGB R170C. The specifications should provide input for control engineering and support the project phases from engineering to commissioning.

Techn. content of a specification:

• requirements based on the contract obligations (e.g. typ of DCS/PLC)
• add. requirements based on the process (e.g. special protections 2/3)
• interface definitions (e.g. limits of supply)

• amount I/O (necessary to define the hard-ware scope/supply

• basic process requests, amount of open/closed loop controls
• definition of alarm and visualisation requirements
• explicit inputs for process – control engineering

FABRITIUS ENERGY CONSULTING

Requirements based on VGB R170C:

1) Clear structure and breakdown

2) Function focused, in-depended of the used DCS/PLS

3) Reasonable economical effort for documentation

4) Usable for engineering, commissioning and operation

5) explicit input for process-control engineering and

operation philosophy

Hierarchical
Structure:
FABRITIUS ENERGY CONSULTING

Schedule/Phasen:

P1 P2 P3 P4 P5
(part of DCS/PLS supplier)

P1 => basic process design and I&C&E engineering

P2 => basic hardware-engineering
P3 => software-engineering and factory acceptance test
P4 => site commissioning (operational handover client)
P5 => final documentation/Record issue
FABRITIUS ENERGY CONSULTING

Final documents after each phase:

P1 => basic process design and I&C engineering

• P&ID_Rev.0
• system description
• I/O or signal-list
• Drive Group list
• Specification for DCS/PLC supplier

P2 => basic hardware-engineering (hardware freeze)

• P&ID_Rev.A
• system description
• final I/O list or signal-list and instrument list
• Process-logic diagramm (based on VGB R170C)

P3 => software-engineering and factory acceptance test

P4 => site commissioning (operational hand-over client)

P5 => Final documentation/Record issue

FABRITIUS ENERGY CONSULTING

Input documents for FUP engineering:

1) P&ID incl. a legend of P&ID

2) I/O - List, valve – list, Signal – list for subsystems

3) System description
4) FUP guideline
5) Abbreviation list
FABRITIUS ENERGY CONSULTING

Advantage of using FUPs:

1) Fup provides a better process-understanding than just a

description (if process-focused!!)
2) supports internal communication and process-understanding

3) clear guideline for DCS/PLC supplier

4) commissioning and operation support / needs to be

“recorded after comm.” => “lessons learned”

5) document used for “claim-negotiations”

FABRITIUS ENERGY CONSULTING

Different ways to match the VGB R170C requirements:

used tools are based on the requirements of:
⇒ frequence of need to draw FUP
⇒ requested or available interfaces to existing DBs
⇒ budget of the company and available peripheries
⇒ personal preferences

Recommended are tools with a comfortable drawing – surface

e.g. based on ACAD

Special requirements: ex-protection based on ATEX or NFPA
