GE 11 - Pacing Activity: Objectives

This document outlines procedures for determining an individual's pace factor through a pacing activity. Students are instructed to walk 30 meters and count their steps over 5 trials to calculate an average. They then determine their pace factor by dividing the distance by their average number of steps. Next, students walk from their home to a nearby establishment over 500 meters, count steps, and use their pace factor to estimate the distance. They compare this estimated distance to a map measurement and compute relative precision. Finally, students submit a report on the fieldwork including results, photos, and location/timing details.

GE 11 - Pacing Activity

Objectives:
1. To be able to determine individual pace factor.
2. To be able to quickly estimate distances by means of pacing method.

Instruments:
Measuring Tape and Markers

Procedure:
1. Establish a 30 meter distance using a measuring tape.
2.

Walk casually from one end of the line

to the other end taking note of the
number of steps that you make. Try to
estimate up to 1/10th of a step using the
heel or toe as basis.

3. Repeat walking until you complete five (5) trials. Compute the mean of these five trials.
4. Determine pace factor by dividing the 30 meter distance over the mean number of
paces or steps for the five trials. The quotient is the pace factor (4 decimals) with unit of
meter/pace. The table for the field activity data is shown below.

Table1. Pace Factor Determination

LINE TAPED TRIALS NUMBER OF AVERAGE OF PACE FACTOR
DISTANCE PACES PACES
1-2 1
2-1 2
1-2 30 meters 3
2-1 4
1-2 5

5. Determine the location of the nearest Jollibee or McDonald store or any

nationally recognized establishment from your house. Walk casually from your
house to that establishment, taking note of the number of steps that you make.
Distance must not be less than half kilometer or 500 meters. Try to estimate up
to 1/10th of a step. Calculate the distance you walked by multiplying total
number of paces by the pace factor.

6. Make a sketch of the route that you traversed with GoogleEarth or Google Map
as background.
7. Compute the relative precision of the pacing method by comparing the distance
estimated by pacing and the route distance determined from GoogleEarth or
Google Maps. Relative Precision

(RP) = [∑Map Distance (MP) – ∑Paced Distance (PD)]/∑Map Distance (MP).

A relative precision of 1/100 is achievable using pacing method. You may repeat
the pacing procedure to attain this number. Show all necessary computations.
The table indicating discrepancy and relative precision is shown in Table 2 below.

8. Write an individual report of this fieldwork in A4 size format. Present properly

the required results of the followed procedures, brief discussion of the results
and a conclusion.
9. Include a description of the location, weather, date and time when fieldwork was
conducted. Present at least two (2) individual photos while doing this activity as
evidence of your hard work.
10. Expected submission of report is on or before 5:00 PM of 8 May 2021. Submit at
[email protected].
