CHAPTER 10 RESPIRATION IN ORGANISMS

DEFINITIONS
1. Respiration: The process of taking in oxygen into the cells, using it for energy
release and then eliminating waste products like carbon dioxide and water.

2. Aerobic respiration: Respiration which occurs in the presence of oxygen.

3. Anaerobic respiration: Respiration which takes place in the absence of


oxygen.

4. Larynx: Sound producing organ; it is the uppermost part of trachea.

5. Pharynx: Common passage that opens both into the food pipe and the wind
pipe.

6. Glottis: Opening of the pharynx into the trachea.

7. Epiglottis: Flap like structure in the glottis that prevents the entry of food into
the trachea.

8. Diaphragm: A muscular sheet forming the floor of chest cavity.

9. Trachea: Wind pipe that allows air to pass into lungs.

1. Raman’s younger brother took part in his school’s Annual Sports Day Programme. He
won the ‘Best Athlete Award’ but when he reached home, there was severe pain in
his legs. Raman gave him hot water treatment and massage that eased his brother’s

a) How can hot water treatment and massage relieve pain?
b) What would have caused him so much pain in legs?
