Philosophy 124: Logic and Critical Thinking

Professor Dawn Gale

Graded Assignment #25: Additional Practice Recognizing and Evaluating Inductive Arguments

For each of the arguments found below, complete the following tasks:

a. Determine whether the argument is an inductive generalization, analogical argument, or causal argument.
b. If it is an inductive generalization, then identify the sample, target, and feature.
c. If it is an analogical argument then identify the sample analogue, target analogue, and feature.
d. If it is a causal argument then identify the precipitating event, the resulting event, & the method if applicable.
e. Evaluate the inductive force of the argument and identify any fallacies that occur. Explain your answers.

**Note: You might want to write the argument in standard argument form and/or diagram it before completing the tasks
above as this might help you further analyze and evaluate the argument and you should be able to do so on the exam.
(Some of these problems were drawn from the textbook, Critical Thinking: A User’s Manual, 2nd edition by Debra Jackson
and Paul Newberry).

1. You can expect to see most states lifting mask mandates in the coming weeks. This is because eight states already
lifted their mask mandates. These states report little to no increase in residents testing positive for Covid-19.
2. I lost my voice over the weekend. Since I feel fine, but had three choir performances over the weekend, it seems
likely that the large amount of singing caused me to lose my voice.
3. The number of severe weather events in coastal areas has increased in each of the last three years, and nothing
seems to suggest that this trend will change. Thus, it is likely that the number of severe weather events will keep increasing.
4. The number of students studying interior design has increased each of the last three years. During this three-year
period, there have been more networks similar to HGTV offering shows about home renovation and design. Thus, it is clear
that the increase in home shows on television has led to in an increase in interior design majors.
5. The 2019 Kansas City Chiefs football team had the best record in the NFL and the 2020 Kansas City Chiefs also
had the best record in the NFL. Both teams also went to the Superbowl. Since the 2021 KC Chiefs football team is a lot like
the 2019 and 2020 teams, it is likely the 2021 KC Chiefs will also have the best record in the NFL and go to the Superbowl.
6. Several contemporary artists showing work at the Nerman museum use recycled materials in their art. Therefore,
we can expect most contemporary artists displaying work in the United States use recycled materials in their art.
7. JCCC is like the University of Kansas. Since KU offers graduate courses in philosophy, I can conclude that JCCC
offers graduate courses in philosophy.
8. I compared the cost of six different PCs, and each cost 20% more at The Discount Computer Store than at
Electronics-R-Us. Since Macs are a lot like PCs, I bet their Mac prices are higher, too.
9. Most people nationwide would be pleased if their son or daughter became a registered nurse. Over 75% of
respondents in a poll of 5,000 people nationwide said they would be pleased if their child became a registered nurse.
10. I run the mile almost 10 seconds faster than my teammate. Since I do weight training every day and she doesn’t,
that is probably the reason I’m faster than she is.
11. My dogs all started scratching yesterday morning. Their itching must be caused by fleas, since it’s the only thing I
can think of that would cause them all to itch so badly.
12. I have visited five small towns in southern Chile, and every one of them has had an old Spanish cathedral. It
appears likely that the majority of small towns in southern Chile have old Spanish cathedrals.
13. Most of the small towns in Kansas area have reported that their populations have decreased since the last census.
Since the land has become drier and farming more difficult over the last decade, it’s likely that people are leaving the area
since they are no longer able to make ends meet.
14. A catfish has gills, and a trout has gills. Consequently, catfish are like trout. Now, catfish are able to live only a short
while out of water. So trout can probably live only a short while out of water.
15. Chimpanzees are highly intelligent, social, and able to use rudimentary tools. Thus, chimpanzees are like mandrills
because they, too, are highly intelligent, social, tool-using animals. Because mandrills are capable of learning a simple form
of sign language, chimpanzees can probably learn a simple form of sign language, too.
