ABSTRACT
The purpose of construction of bank building which is proposed to locate at

Sanitorium, Sengipatti is to serve the surrounding people to facilitate banking

transection such as money transfer, debit, credit, loan (education, farmer),

mortgages. The building is planned as per the guidelines and norms given by

AUTHORITATIVE OF MUNICIPAL CORPORATION. The building consists of

ATM, Manager Hall, UPS room, Waiting hall, Staff room, File room, Separate

Toilet and Strong room.

The plan of the building is done using AUTO CAD and the same is designed

for all the load combination such as dead load, live load with relevant use of Indian

Standard codes IS 456 – 2000, IS 875- 1987 (part II) and IS 1569 – 2003 (strong

room). The building is designed as a framed structure such as slab, beam column

and footing are designed using Limit State Method of Design. The quantities of

material are estimated and the cost of building is arrived as per the rates given by

PWD Data book.

1.INTRODUCTION
1.1GENEREAL:

BANK BUILDING:
Bank building which is proposed to construct at sanadorium sengipatti,
Thanjavur with a total area of 5000 sq.ft. The building is designed as a RCC framed
structure consisting of slab, beam and column built monolithically and provided with
strong room which is reinforced concrete wall.
Bank building consists, Manager room, Staff room, File room, UPS room,
Strong room, Separate toilets, Meeting hall, Waiting hall, ATM, various counters.
The strong room is planned and designed as per guidelines given by reserve bank of
India and norms specified by IS15369-2003. The RCC walls built as cast in-situ
construction. The strong room is provided with additional safety features. As the
working area is large T beam is provided to distributed load evenly.

1.2 OBJECTIVES AND SCOPE:

The main objective of plan, Design and Estimation of bank building is to carry
out the comprehensive design of structural element such as,
1. The selection of the appropriate structural forms & its sizes and laying out
the locations and arrangements of structural elements such as slab,
columns, and beams.
2. To obtain the conceptual design of T beams
3. To acquire the knowledge about the reinforced concrete walls and its
relevant codal provision.
4. To determine the required reinforcement, both longitudinal and transverse.
5. Detailing of reinforcement such as development lengths, hooks, and bends.

1.3 METHOD OF DESIGN:

All structural members such as footing, beam, column and slabs are designed
by Limit state method.
CONCEPTS OF LIMIT STATE METHOD:
Based on limit state concept, the structure shall be designed to withstand
safely all loads liable to act on its throughout its life; it shall also satisfy the
serviceability requirements, such as limitations on deflections and cracking. The
acceptable limit for the safety and serviceability requirements before the failure
occur is called limit state method.
The aim of design is to achieve acceptable probabilities that the structure will
not become unfit for the use for which it is intended, that as it is will not reach a limit
state method.
DESIGN LOAD(WU):
The design load (wu) is determined by multiplying the characteristic load (w),
by the appropriate partial safety factor (wu) =1.5w

 Lintel beam
 Sunshade
 Isolated footing
2.DATA COLLECTION, LOAD AND LAYOUT
2.1 DATA:
The design data as follows:
Live load: 3KN/m2
Strong room live load: 4 KN/m2
Floor finish: 0.5 KN/m2
Location: Sanatorium, Sengipatti, Thanjavur.
Depth of foundation: 900mm
Type of soil: Gravel soil
Allowable bearing capacity: 200KN/m2
Plinth level: 230mm
Walls: 230mm
Safe bearing capacity of soil: 200KN/m2

2.2 LOADS CONSIDERED

2.2.1 DEAD LOADS:

The dead load comprises of the weights of wall, partitions floor finishes, false
ceiling, false floor and the other permanent constructions in the buildings. The dead
loads may be calculated from the dimensions of the various members and their unit
weights. The unit weights of plain concrete and reinforced concrete made with sand
and gravel or crushed natural stone aggregate may be taken as 24KN/m3 and
25KN/m3 respectively.

2.2.2 LIVE LOADS:

Imposed load is produced by the intended use or occupancy of a building including

the weight of movable partitions, distributed and concentrated loads, load due to
impact and vibration and dust loads
Imposed loads do not include loads due to wind, seismic activity, snow and load
imposed due to temperature changes to which the structure will be subject to creep
and shrinkage of the structure the different settlements to which the structure may
undergo

effective depth = 300 - 40 - 8 = 252mm
Step 2 Load calculation
wall load = 3 x 0.23 x 18 = 12.42 KN/m
Factored load = 18.63 KN/m
Step 3 Moment calculation
Effective span = 3886 + 252 = 4116mm
Moment , Mu = (wl²/ 8) = 39.456 KNm
𝑀u limit = 0.138 ƒck bd ² = 40.31KNm > Mu
hence we need to design singly reinforcement beam
Step 4 Reinforcement calculation
M = 39.45KNm ; R = (M/bd²) = 2.7

fck  4.6 R 
Pt = 50 x 1  1   = 0.92%
fy  fck 

Ast = (Pt bd/100) = 535.23mm²

No .of .bars = ( Ast/ast ) = 2.65 ≈ 3
provide 16mm 𝜑 bars 3 nos
Step 5 Shear Reinforcement
Shear force = ( w x l /2) = 38.34 KN , 𝜏v = 0.66 N/mm²
𝜏c = 0.60 N/mm²

𝜏v > 𝜏c < 𝜏c max

Hence, it requires shear reinforcement
shear force = Vu – (𝜏c bd )
Vus = 3.56KN
spacing , Sv = (0.87 ƒy Asv d )/ Vus = 2569mm
minimum spacing , 0.75 d = 189mm
provide 2 legged 8mmɸ bars , at 180mm c/c
Step : 6 check for deflection
(L/d) act = ( L /d) basic x Kt x Kc x Kf
Pt = 1.04% ; L/d= (3886/252) = 15.4
Kc = 1.2 ; Kt = 1.5
(L/d)max = 20x1.2x1.5 = 36.8
(L/d) max > (L/d) actual
Hence deflection control is satisfied

Result :
Total depth = 300 mm & breadth = 230 mm
No of bars = 3 (bottom) & dia bars = 16 mm
Dia of stirrups = 8 mm & 2 legged
Spacing = 180 mm
3.3 DESIGN OF COLUMN(Axial load)
Step 1 Load calculation
Total load = ( Axial load + self weight of column + load from wall )
= 160 + 6.48 + 72.39
= 238.87 KN
Factor Load = 358.3 KN
Floor height = 4m
Step 2 Slenderness ratio
λ = (l eff )/ D = (4000x0.5)/230 = 10.65< 12
Hence, It is a short column
Step 3 Eccentricity calculation

e min =   
L D 400 x0.5 230 
   = 11.6mm<20mm
 500 30   100 3 

0.05D = 11.65 ≈ 11.6mm

Let us assume as Axial loaded column
Step 4 Gross area required
Assume 1% of steel , Asc = 1% Ag
P = 0.4 ƒck Ag + (0.67 ƒy – 0.4 ƒck ) Asc
358.3x10ᶟ = 0.4 x 20 x Ag + ( 0.67x415 - 0.4x20 ) 0.01 Ag
= 10.7Ag
Ag = 33484.41mm²
Provide, Ag = 230x230 = 52900mm²
Size of column = 230 mmx 230mm
Step 5 Design of longitudinal reinforcement
P = 0.4 ƒck Ag + (0.67 ƒy – 0.4 ƒck ) Asc
358.3x10ᶟ = 0.4 x 20 x 52900 + ( 0.67x415 - 0.4x20 ) Asc
Asc = 240.32mm²
minimum , Ast = 0.8% Ag
= 423.2 mm ²
no .of . bars = 4 nos
provide , 4 no of bars of 12mm ɸ bar

Step 6 Lateral Reinforcement

diameter , ɸ ≥ ɸmax / 12 = 12/4 = 3mm

6mm
D = 230mm
spacing , St ≤ 16 ɸ = 16x12 = 192 mm
300mm

Provide 6mm ɸ bars at 190mm c/c

Result :
Size of column = 230 mm x 230 mm
Dia of bars = 12 mm & nominal cover = 40 mm
Dia of Lateral ties = 6 mm & Spacing = 190 mm
3.4 DESIGN OF FOOTING
Step 1 Design data
Load from column = 358.3 KN
Assume 10% of load for self weight of footing + back fill
= 35.83 KN
Total load = 394.13 KN
Safe bearing capacity of soil = 200KN /m ²
Step 2 Size of footing
Footing area = ( Load / SBC) = ( /200) = 1.97m²
provide square footing of size 1.5m x1.5m
upward soil pressure = 394.13/2.25 = 175.17 KN / m²
Step 3 Depth of footing
Moment, M = 175.17x 2 x 0.885²/ 2 = 137.2KNm
M = Mlim = 0.138 ƒck b d²
b = 1500 mm , ƒck = 20 Mpa , M = 137.2 KNm
d = 182mm
D = ( 182 + 50 + 6) x 1.3 = 400 mm
Step 4 Depth for punching shear
For punching shear consideration,
punching load = column load – reaction on area
= 394.13 – 6.77
=387.3 KN
Assume τc = 0.28 MPa ( for pt = 0.15 %)
Equating punching shear resistance to the punching load,
4x230xDx1.8 = 387.3x10ᶟ
D = 233.8mm < D provided
hence safe
D = 400 mm , cover = 50 mm and 12 mm dia bars
Effective depth = 400 – 50 – 6 = 344 mm
( Mu / d²b ) = 0.77
Pt = 0.22%
Ast = 1170.4 mm²
Spacing = (ast/Ast) = 96mm ≈ 90mm
provide 12mm ɸ bars 90mm c/c
Step 4 Check for one way shear
overall depth at critical section ,
effective depth = 344 mm
shear force for critical section,Vu = 175.17x 1.5 x 0.344
= 90.38 KN
width of footing at top at this critical section
b’ = b + 2d = 230 + ( 2 x 344 ) = 918mm
Nominal shear ,
𝜏v = ( Vu / b d ) = ( 90.38x 10ᶟ / 918 x 344 )
𝜏v = 0.28 N/mm²
For Pt = 0.24% ,
𝜏c = 0.36 N/mm²
𝜏v < 𝜏c
hence safe for one way shear
Result :
Size of footing = 1.5 m x 1.5 m
Dia of bars = 12 mm
Spacing = 90 mm
Nominal cover at bottom = 50 mm
Nominal cover at side = 100 mm
3.5 DESIGN OF LINTEL BEAM

Step 1 given data

ƒck = 20 N/mm²

ƒy = 415 N/mm²

Q = 2.76

L = 3.886m

Step 2 Depth calculation

Assume size of lintel is 230*150mm

use 12mm dia bar with 20mm nominal cover

effective depth = 150-20-(12/2)

= 125mm

height masonry above the opening = 1.1m

height masonry above the lintel =1.1-0.15

= 0.95m
STEP 3 Load calculation
Weight of wall = 18 x 0.23 x 0.95
= 3.93kN/m
self weight of beam = 0.23 x 0.15 x 25
= 0.86 kN/m
Total = 4.8 kN/m
Factored load = 7.18 kN/m
Bending moment(M) = WL²/8
= 13.55kNm
Step 4 Effective depth calculation
MU = Qbd2
13.55X106 = 2.76X230Xd2
d = 146 < dprovided (125mm)
Hence provide D = 200mm
Effective depth ,d = 200 - 20 – (12/2) = 174mm
Mu lim = 2.76 x 230 x 174 = 19.2KNm
Hence this section is under reinforced section

Step 5 : Area of reinforcement

M = 13.5KNm ; R = (M/bd² ) = 1.94

fck  4.6 R 
Pt = 50 x 1  1   = 0.61%
fy  fck 

Ast = 244.12mm2
Min Ast = 0.12% bD
=55.2 mm2
Let provide 12mm ɸ bars
no of bars = (Ast /ast ) = 2.15 ≈ 3
provide 3 no of 12mm ɸ bars
Step 6 : Check for shear
VU = W x l
= 27.9KN
Nominal shear stress τv = (Vu/ bd) = 0.69 N/mm²
design shear strength τc
% of steel = (Ast / bd)x 100
= 0.84%
τc = 0.29N/mm2
τv > τ c
Hence, we it need shear reinforcement

Step 7: Shear reinforcement

shear force = Vu – (𝜏c bd )
Vus = 16.29KN
spacing , Sv = (0.87 ƒy Asv d )/ Vus = 387.87mm
minimum span , 0.75 d = 130.4mm
provide 2 legged 8mmɸ bars , at 130mm c/c
Result :
Depth = 200 mm & breadth = 230 mm
Dia of bars = 12 mm & No of bars = 3
Dia of stirrups = 8 mm (2 legged) & spacing 130 mm
3.6 DESIGN OF SUNSHADE
Step 1 Given data:
From IS 875 2002- part II,
Live Load = 1KN/m
Assume ,Total thickness of sunshade = 100mm
Use 12 mm dia bars,20 mm nominal cover
Effective depth = 100 - 20 – 6 = 74 mm
Step 2 Load calculation
Dead load of sunshade = 1x1.8x0.1x2 = 4.5KN/m
Weight of finishing water proofin = 0.5KN/m
total load = 0.5+1+4.5 = 5.25 KN/m
factored load = 5.25x1.5 = 9KN/m
Step 3 Moment calculation:
Mu = ( wl² /2)
= 9 x 1.2²/2
= 6.48KNm

Step 4 Depth calculation:

M = Mu lim = 0.138 ƒck bd²
d = 48.45 mm < d provided
Hence Safe
Step 5 Calculation the area of steel
M = 6.48KNm ; R = (M/bd² ) = 1.18

fck  4.6 R 
Pt = 50 x 1  1   = 0.35%
fy  fck 

Ast = 261mm2
Min Ast = 0.12% bD
= 120 mm2
Spacing = Ast / ast = 433 mm

Minimum spacing,
i) 3d = 3x74 = 222mm
ii) 300mm
provide 12mm dia bars 220mm c/c

Step 6 : Check for shear

VU = Wl
= 9KN
Nominal shear stress τv = (Vu/ bd) = 0.12N/mm²
design shear strength
τc = 0.53 N/mm2
τv < τ c , hence safe
Step 7 : Distribution reinforcement

Astmin = 0.12% of gross area

= 120 mm²
Diameter of bar = 8 mm,
Spacing = (ast / Ast) x 1000 = 418 mm
Provide 8 mm bars @ 300 mm C/C
Result :
Dia of bars = 12 mm
Spacing = 220 mm
4.SPECIFICATION FOR RCC STRONG ROOM
(B-CLASS STRONG ROOM)

1. THE MINIMUM REINFORCEMENT AS ADVISED BY RBI ARE GIVEN

BELOW

Walls:
12 mm dia mild steel/tor steel @ 6" c/c both ways and on the both faces of the
wall (a formation of reinforcement matt of about 6"x6") on either face of the
wall to be obtained.

FLOOR
Same as in the case of walls but only on one face.

CEILING
Same as in the case of walls.

Further where reinforcement is proposed on two faces of a RCC member, it

shall be staggered in such a manner that any view taken at right angles to the
matt formation would show reinforcement at every (3") c/c in elevation (in
respect of walls) and in plan (in respect of ceiling slab). The above
reinforcement are only the minimum and depending on the structural
requirements, the structural consultants for the work, should design and detail
out actual reinforcements required but these shall not be less than what are
specified above.
