7. PhD students have the right to request the suspension of the course for a period not exceeding one
year for all cases provided for by current regulations such as maternity, serious illness and civil service.

of scholarship holders, the termination of the scholarship for the suspension period. The entire
duration of the PhD Course cannot be reduced due to the aforementioned suspension. Therefore, it
will be extended for a period corresponding to the interruption.

8. In the case of maternity, attendance of the PhD Course is obligatorily suspended from two months
preceding the presumed date of birth and for the following three months, or from the month
preceding the presumed date of birth and for the following four months, if authorised by a specialist
doctor from the National Health Service and the competent doctor.

9. It is the responsibility of the PhD Course Coordinator to promptly notify the competent office of the
interruption of the PhD student’s activity for the consequent administrative measures.

10. PhD students, as an integral part of the training project, subject to authorisation from the Faculty
Board and without any increase in the scholarship, can carry out tutoring activities for students of the
degree and master’s degree courses and, in any case, within the maximum limit of 40 hours for each
academic year, supplementary teaching activities.
The performance of the above activities must be indicated in the appropriate registers.

2020 Call: H2020-MSCA-ITN-EID-2018
Topic: MSCA-ITN-EID-2018 Type of action: MSCA-ITN-EID
Project Full Title: Quantitative detection of bacterial endotoxin by novel nanotechnological approaches
Project Acronym: ENDONANO
Project number: 812661

ENDONANO is a consortium formed by 4 partners and 2 partner organizations (NATIONAL RESEARCH

COUNCIL, PARIS-LODRON-UNIVERSITAT SALZBURG, FUNDACIO INSTITUT CATALA DE NANOCIENCIA I
NANOTECNOLOGIA, DIAGNOSTICUM GYARTO ES FORGALMAZO ZARTKORUEN MUKODO
RESZVENYTARSASAG, MILTENYI BIOTEC BV & CO KG, BLUSENSE DIAGNOSTICS APS, ALTA S.r.l.u., APPLIED
NANOPARTICLES).
The consortium aims to train a total of 4 PhD students, who will be formed in a programme through
active participation in the scientific life of the participating laboratories, in scientific and technical
courses, and an exchange plan between the consortium’s research groups.

OUTLINE OF THE SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMME

ENDONANO (Quantitative detection of bacterial endotoxin through new nanotechnological approaches)
aims to address regulatory and safety issues such as the impartial quantitative detection of bacterial
endotoxin in medical products, drug development and toxicological studies. Current tests used to detect
bacterial endotoxin (LAL assays) are only reliable under limited conditions and subject to interference at
different levels. Therefore, they cannot be applied to all products and substances. ENDONANO will
leverage new concepts based on the ability of metal nanoparticles to adsorb endotoxins, and new
detection methods, based on molecular probes, to develop new trials to quantitatively detect endotoxin
in complex matrices under a wide range of conditions. ENDONANO’s scientific and technological
objectives include 1. investigate the ability of endotoxin to specifically induce inflammatory reactions in
human primary immune cells; 2. develop new methods based on the capture of endotoxins by metal
nanoparticles in complex matrices (biological fluids, emulsions, gels, etc.); 3. design and implement signal
generation and detection methods for quantitative measurement of endotoxins; 4. plan prototype
analyses to be developed and validated for commercial purposes.
ENDONANO will train 4 PhD students in a global training program that will include research training,
technical, scientific and transferable skills courses, active participation in public scientific events and
intense cross-sectoral networking. The ENDONANO consortium comprises three academic institutions
with strong experience in inflammation, advanced biosensors and maximum expertise in nanotechnology
and the use of nanoparticles to modulate bacterial functions, two EMS experts in the development and
marketing of diagnostic detection tests, a biotechnology company specialising in technology with
magnetic microspheres and two participating organisations (EMS). All of them have a proven experience
in higher education and training,
ENDONANO will train 4 talented ESRs in the field of “Medical engineering and technology” and “immuno-
nanosafety” towards a career in industry or academia through a highly interdisciplinary and cross-
sectoral research training program aimed at inspiring them to exploit the ENDONANO path as a treasure
to design new assays for the determination of bacterial endotoxin.
The training programme is based on:

27
1) experimental activities in the laboratories of the consortium members;
2) theoretical and practical specialisation courses;
3) courses on knowledge/skills complementary to scientific ones, such as scientific communication,
project management, ethics, intellectual property and entrepreneurship;
4) the exposure of students to industrial and/or academic research.
The PhD positions selected within the ENDONANO project are mainly aimed at foreign students or at
Italian students who have resided or worked abroad for at least 24 months in the last 3 years, according
to the mobility rules provided for by the Horizon 2020-Marie Sklodowska Curie Action ITN program.
As part of the ENDONANO project, there is 1 position for the National Research Council (Institute of
Biochemistry and Cell Biology, Naples, Italy) to be formed for PhD students.
With a letter of intent, the CNR (Institute of Biochemistry and Cell Biology) undertakes to
include the University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli as a partner of the ENDONANO project for the
training in the PhD Course in Biomolecular Sciences of the fellow recruited by the CNR itself”:
The financial cover will be provided directly by these institutions from European funds as beneficiaries.
