Socio-economic status is defined as the position of an individual on

a social-economic scale that measures factors such as education,
income, type of occupation, place of residence, and,
in some populations, heritage and religion

HOW CAN WE IDENTIFY OUR SOCIOECONOMIC STATUS?

 Upper Class – Elite

 Upper Middle Class - The upper-middle class refers to people within the middle
class that have high educational attainment, high salaries, and high status jobs
with high cost of living.
 Lower Middle Class - Individuals in the lower-middle class tend to hold low status
professional or white collar jobs, such as school teacher, nurse, or paralegal.
The lower-middle class is among the largest social classes, rivaled only by the
working class, and it is thought to be growing.
 Working Class- The working class consists of individuals and households with low
educational attainment, low status occupations, and below average incomes.
 Poor -

Collective behavior can be

distinguished from group behavior,
and it is also distinct from deviant
(different) and conforming (compliant)
actions.

Collective behavior can be observed in

four types of groupings of people: the
crowd, the mass, the public, and
social movements, although other
phenomena, such as fads and
rumors, are also considered to be
forms of collective behavior.

Common Phrases: Anu ba ang uso? Pwed ba makiuso kasi USO kasi yan eh,
Ay! Mkapangasawa n nga rin ksi yung kapibahay nga naming
18 yrs old pa lng nag asawa na eh.
Just in: chismis… Uy alam mo ba??? Ikaw: talaga? Yaaka kaya pala…
Uso: Uy punta tayo dun sa bagong amusement/food park balita ko madaming
kainan at choices ng MILKTEA na paborito natin.. Tara!

Studying collective behavior improves our understanding of how to organize social

movements to initiate social change.

There are two main reasons for studying collective behavior. First, to reduce the
damage caused by events such as natural disasters (or PANDEMIC such as
COVID-19) and riots (Political) by understanding how people behave in these
situations; second, it improves our understanding of how to organize social
movements in order to initiate social change.

c. Abstraction and Generalization

In the previous readings, we discussed about identifying our personal views

and opinions including our preferences in many facets of our society, It is
then understood that we, as human beings we are entitled of our own
choices and many options that we pick. It absolutely can make ourselves
feel better soon as these become our comfort at some point.

However, along the way as we go on with our lives, we come across with
situations, scenes, untoward circumstances that we less likely to expect and
anticipate. This may mean, we have to make some adjustments especially in
dealing with people who come from different cultures and upbringing.
Saying “Maam and Sir” to address a person in the Philippines may mean
respect, but in the US it may mean an insult instead of calling a person by
their first name or Mr. Smith or Ms. Jones. Filipinos may say “please fall in
line” which may mean literally falling into where you are standing at the
moment”, marrying somebody (same sex) would be fine in the western
countries but is condemned in our country as it defies our religion and
morale as a Catholic country or getting pregnant out of wedlock is a curse-
able act.

These are just few of a thousand of norms, values, ethics that we are trying
to understand and analyze at times. We may wonder why are things
happening in this cruel world, why am I not being valued, loved or hated. In
studying the content of our discussion and if we just take a look of the
essential parts of our society in recognizing the underlying issues and
events, we can clearly say and understand that we are all part of the
equation. Where people interact, connect, love each other, hate each other,
reconcile and REPEAT… The question now is…ARE YOU PART OF THE
SOLUTION OR NOT?

Being who you are and being how you want to be may have a lot of
determinants. Is it your childhood and the environment you grew up with?
Is it your parents or the people around you who influence for the better or
for the worst version of yourself? In studying Sociology, Anthropology and
Political Science, we will have a better if not a perfect understanding why
things happen, why people disconnect because of a heated argument,
because of different opinions and point of views because of the learning
experiences acquired from the significant people who influence your
dispositions, choices and decisions.

A gender preference may affect one’s decision and choice however, this may
not always affect who will you be in the future. Successful or not, human
beings face different fates and status in life. Rich or poor, ugly or pretty, on
different religions or beliefs, professional or just a simple vendor on the
street. What is important is how we view life as great and that you are being
valued.
d. Application (Apply what you have learned)
