University of Botswana Faculty of Engineering and Technology Department of Mechanical Engineering CCB231 - Sample Questions - Solutions

The document contains sample questions and solutions related to a binary eutectic system of lead (Pb) and tin (Sn). [1] It includes questions that ask the learner to: identify phases that form when cooling an alloy of 70% Pb and 30% Sn to 250°C; determine the weight percentages of phases; and calculate weights of phases formed by a eutectic reaction below 183°C. [2] It also contains questions about the microstructure that forms just below the eutectic temperature of 183°C. [3]

Question 1

One kilogram of alloy of 70 wt% Pb – 30 wt% Sn is slowly cooled from 300oC See
Figure 2 below for the Pb – Sn system. Calculate

(a) What phases form when the alloy is cooled to 250 oC? [2]
(b) Determine the weight percent of the phases that form at 250oC. [4]
(c) The weight in kilograms of alpha, (α), and beta, (β), formed by the eutectic
reaction just below the eutectic temperature ((183oC). [5]
(d) Show schematically in a clearly labeled diagram the microstructure that forms
just below the eutectic temperature ((183oC). [4]

The figure below shows a binary eutectic system of Sn-Pb.

(a) Below TE, name the type of structure (in terms of phases present) that forms at
i. Co = 61.9 wt% Sn [1 mark]
ii. Co < 61.9 wt% Sn, and [1 mark]
iii. Co > 61.9 wt% Sn. [1 mark]
(b) For a 40 wt%Sn-60wt% Pb alloy at TE (just below), what phase(s) is (are)
present? What are their relative amounts? [6 marks]
(c) Show schematically in a clearly labeled diagram the microstructure that forms just
below the eutectic temperature (183 oC) [6 marks]
