Important information

Proper use
The machine has been designed and built for
domestic use. It should only be used to prepare
coffee and to heat milk and water. Use for any other
purpose will be deemed improper. JURA Elektroap-
parate AG cannot accept any responsibility for the
consequences of improper use.

Before using the machine always carefully read and

comply with all these instructions. Keep this man-
ual close to the IMPRESSA and, if appropriate, pass
it on to the next user.

For your safety Please read and note carefully the following impor-
tant safety information.
By doing this, you can avoid the life-threatening
danger of electric shock:
ZZ Never use a machine which has been dam-
aged or with a defective power cable.
ZZ For information on what to do in case of dam-
age, for example if there is a smell of burning,
unplug the machine immediately from the
mains supply and contact the JURA service
centre.
ZZ If the power cable for this machine is dam-
aged, it must be repaired either directly by
JURA or by a JURA approved service centre.
ZZ Make sure that the IMPRESSA and the power
cable are not located close to hot surfaces.
ZZ Be careful to ensure that the power cable does
not get caught and does not rub against sharp
edges.
ZZ Never open and repair the machine yourself.
Do not modify the machine in any way that is
not described in the IMPRESSA Manual. The
6
Important information

machine contains live parts. If opened, there is

a danger of serious injury. Repairs may only be
carried out by JURA approved service centres,
using original spare parts and accessories.

There is a risk of scalds or burns on the spouts or

on the nozzle:
ZZ Place the machine out of the reach of children.
ZZ Do not touch any hot parts. Use the handles
provided.
ZZ Be careful to ensure that the appropriate noz-
zle is installed and clean. The nozzle or parts of
the nozzle might come off if the parts are not
assembled correctly or a blockage occurs.

A defective machine is not safe and could cause

injury or fire. To avoid damage and any associated
risk of injury or fire:
ZZ Never allow the power cable to loosely hang
down. The power cable can be tripped over or
damaged.
ZZ Protect your IMPRESSA from environmental
influences such as rain, frost and direct sun-
light.
ZZ Do not put the IMPRESSA, cable or connec-
tions in water.
ZZ Do not put the IMPRESSA or any individual
parts in the dishwasher.
ZZ Switch your IMPRESSA off with the On/Off but-
ton before cleaning it. Always wipe your
IMPRESSA with a damp cloth rather than a wet
one, and protect it from prolonged water
splash.

7
Important information

ZZ Only connect the machine to a power supply

in accordance with the information on the rat-
ing plate. The rating plate is located on the
underside of your IMPRESSA. Further technical
data is given in Chapter 10 ‘Technical Data’.
ZZ Use only original JURA care products. Use of
accessories that are not explicitly recom-
mended by JURA could damage the IMPRESSA.
ZZ Do not use any coffee beans treated with addi-
tives or caramelised coffee beans.
ZZ Always fill the water tank with cold, fresh mains
water.
ZZ If you are absent for a prolonged period of
time, turn the machine off.
ZZ Children may not clean or service the machine
unless supervised by a responsible person.
ZZ Do not allow children to play with the machine.
ZZ Keep children under the age of 8 away from
the machine, or supervise them constantly.
ZZ Children aged 8 and over may only operate
the machine without supervision if they have
been instructed in how to use it safely. Chil-
dren must be able to recognise and under-
stand the potential dangers arising from incor-
rect use.

People, including children, who

ZZ do not have the physical, sensory or mental
capabilities to use the machine safely or
ZZ are inexperienced or lack knowledge in how to
use the machine safely
must be supervised by a responsible person when
using it, or must be instructed in how to use it cor-
rectly.

2 Preparing and using your IMPRESSA for the first time

Filter rinsing stops automatically after approx. 500 ml.

HEATING appears on the display, then READY is dis-
played. The filter is now activated.

Determining water EE However, if you are using the CLARIS filter cartridge and have
hardness and adjusting activated it, you will not be able to adjust the water hard-
ness.

The harder the water is, the more frequently the IMPRESSA needs to
be descaled. It is therefore important to adjust the water hardness.

The water hardness can be adjusted on a continuous scale between

1° dH and 30° dH. This can also be deactivated, which means that
the IMPRESSA will not let you know when it has to be descaled.

You can find out what the water hardness is by using the Aquadur®
test strip supplied as standard.
TT Hold the test strip briefly (for one second) under flowing
water. Shake off the water.
TT Wait for about one minute.
TT You will then be able to read the degree of water hardness
from the discolouration of the Aquadur® test strip and the
description on the packaging.
You can now adjust the water hardness.

2 Preparing and using your IMPRESSA for the first time

Adjusting the grinder You can adjust the grinder continuously to suit the roast of your
coffee.

CAUTION If you adjust the fineness of grind when the grinder is not operating,
the grinding wheel could be damaged.
TT Only adjust the fineness of grind when the grinder is run-
ning.

The fineness of grind setting is correct if the coffee flows regularly

from the coffee spout. A fine, thick crema is also formed.
Our recommendations:
ZZ Select a fine setting for a light roast.
UU If the fineness of grind setting is too fine, the coffee only
drips from the coffee spout.

ZZ Select a coarse setting for a darker roast.

UU If the fineness of grind is too coarse the coffee flows too
quickly from the coffee spout.

Example: To change the fineness of grind during coffee preparation,

proceed as follows:
TT Open the cover of the bean container.
TT Remove the aroma preservation cover.
TT Place a cup under the coffee spout.
o T Press the Coffee button.
The grinder starts and 1 COFFEE is displayed. After this,

4 Preparation at the touch of a button

4 Preparation at the touch of a button

In this chapter you will find out how to prepare coffee and milk spe-
cialities and hot water without making further settings.

Chapter 3, ‘Familiarising yourself with the control options’, will teach

you how to adjust the settings to your personal preferences. Alter-
natively, you can use Chapter 5, ‘Permanent settings in program-
ming mode’.

EE You can interrupt the machine at any time while a coffee or

milk speciality or hot water is being prepared. To do this, press
any button.
EE During preparation, you can change the set amount by turn-
ing the Rotary Switch.

@@ You can also try out the preparation of coffee specialities

online. Visit the Knowledge Builder at www.jura.com.

paring coffee and steam. After preparing several cappuccinos
within a short period of time, it is possible that the coffee only
flows irregularly from the right-hand coffee spout. In this case
allow your IMPRESSA a short break before making the next
cappuccino.

Pre-ground coffee You can choose a second coffee variety, for example decaffeinated
coffee, with the filler funnel for preground coffee.

EE Never add more than two level measuring spoons of pre-

ground coffee.
EE Use pre-ground coffee which is not ground too finely. Very
fine coffee can block up the system so that the coffee only
comes out in drips.
EE If you did not fill the machine with a sufficient amount of pre-
ground coffee, NOT ENOUGH PRE-GROUND is displayed
and the IMPRESSA stops operation.
