Data Communication Assignment
Data Communication Assignment
1. Television Channel are 6MHZ wide. Calculate how many bits/sec can be sent if four-
level digital signals are used. Assume a noiseless channel. [3 marks]
Solution
Using the Nyquist theorem, we can sample 12 million times/sec. Four–level signals provide 2
bits per sample, for a total data rate of 24 Mbps.
Maximum data rate = 2 * H * log2V bits/sec.
= 2 *6MHz *log2
4 bits/sec
2 = 2 *6MHz * log 2 bits/sec = 2 * 2 * 6 MHz*bits/sec
=24 Mbps
2.
a) Show how the given stream of eight bits 11000001 would be transmitted at base-band
using:
i. NZR-I
ii. HDB3
iii. Manchester coding
Use a graph paper and blue ballpoint to sketch and take a clear photo of he drawings and
paste on the word document to be submitted.
[6 marks]
b) Highlight on the disadvantages of Manchester coding as compared to NRZ-I and
HDB3. [4 marks]
It needs more bandwidth than other encodings
Manchester-encoded signal requires that more bits be transmitted than those in the original
signal.
To send one information bit, two logic states have to be sent, thus the frequency of the outgoing
signal must be twice as large as the number of incoming information bits per second.
synchronization is lost due to a lack of transmissions
