LINEAR MEASUREMENT
(LENGTH)
LINEAR MEASURES are used to
measure line segments(distances).
This is used to measure the Length.
The inch is the smallest commonly
used linear unit in the English system.
For longer distances the foot, yard and
mile are used.
ENGLISH LINEAR MEASUREMENTS
12 inches (in) = 1 foot (ft)
36 inches (in) = 1 yard (yd)
3 feet (ft) = 1 yard (yd)
5280 feet (ft) = 1 mile (mi)
1760 yards (yd) = 1 mile (mi)
CONVERTING LINEAR MEASUREMENT
• To convert from a larger unit to a smaller unit,
determine how many of the smaller unit are in the
larger unit and then multiply.
• To convert a smaller unit to a larger unit,
determine how many of the smaller unit are in the
larger unit and then just divide.
CONVERTING LINEAR MEASUREMENT
a) 8 yd to ft
Answer: 8 yd = 24 ft
SOLUTION
b) 108 in to ft
Answer: 108 in = 9 ft
Problem Solving
Therefore, Rica is taller since Rica’s height is 48 inches while her sister’s
height is 42 inches.
Problem Solving
Rica is 4 ft tall, while her sister is 42 in . Who is taller?
Therefore, Rica is taller since Rica’s height is 4 ft while her sister’s height
is 3.5 ft.
The meter is the basic unit of length in the
Metric or SI system. The meters is divided
into decimeters, centimeters and
millimeter. For longer distances the
decameter, hectometer, and kilometer are
used.
METRIC LINEAR MEASUREMENTS
1000 millimeters (mm) = 1 meter (m)
100 centimeters (cm) = 1 meter (m)
10 decimeters (dm) = 1 meter (m)
10 meters (m) = 1 decameter (dam)
100 meters (m) = 1 hectometer (hm)
1000 meters (m) = 1 kilometer (km)
Write the units per mark.
Let’s try
1) 3.45 km = ______dm
3.45 km = 34 500 dm
Let’s try
2)36.72 cm = _____m
36. 72 cm = 0.3672 m
Problem Solving
Mary buys a reel of thread for sewing. There are 10 m of thread
on the reel. She uses 210 cm. How much is left on the reel in
centimeters?
Solution: Convert 10 m to cm.
