Math 7 Q1 Second Week

This document provides information about linear measurement in both the English and metric systems. It defines linear measures as those used to measure line segments or distances. In the English system, the inch is the smallest unit, while feet, yards, and miles are used for longer distances. Conversion factors are provided between inches, feet, yards, and miles. The metric system is also introduced, with the meter as the basic unit divided into decimeters, centimeters and millimeters for smaller units and decameters, hectometers, and kilometers for longer distances. Example conversion problems are worked through between units in both systems.

LINEAR MEASUREMENT
(LENGTH)
LINEAR MEASURES are used to
measure line segments(distances).
This is used to measure the Length.
The inch is the smallest commonly
used linear unit in the English system.
For longer distances the foot, yard and
mile are used.
ENGLISH LINEAR MEASUREMENTS
12 inches (in) = 1 foot (ft)
36 inches (in) = 1 yard (yd)
3 feet (ft) = 1 yard (yd)
5280 feet (ft) = 1 mile (mi)
1760 yards (yd) = 1 mile (mi)
CONVERTING LINEAR MEASUREMENT
• To convert from a larger unit to a smaller unit,
determine how many of the smaller unit are in the
larger unit and then multiply.
• To convert a smaller unit to a larger unit,
determine how many of the smaller unit are in the
larger unit and then just divide.
CONVERTING LINEAR MEASUREMENT

EXAMPLE: Convert the following

a) 8 yd to ft
b)108 in to ft
CONVERSION FOR ENGLISH LINEAR
MEASUREMENTS
12 inches (in) = 1 foot (ft)
36 inches (in) = 1 yard (yd)
3 feet (ft) = 1 yard (yd)
5280 feet (ft) = 1 mile (mi)
1760 yards (yd) = 1 mile (mi)
SOLUTION

a) 8 yd to ft

8 yd = __ft 1.There are 3 ft in 1 yd.

8×3=24 2. Multiply since yard is larger
than a foot.

Answer: 8 yd = 24 ft
SOLUTION

b) 108 in to ft

108 in = __ ft 1.There are 12 inches in 1 ft.

108÷12=9 2. Divide because an inch is
smaller than a foot.

Answer: 108 in = 9 ft
Problem Solving

According to the Guinness Book of World Records , the longest

carpet is 3.32 mi long. How long is this red carpet in yards?

Solution: Convert 3.32 mi to yards.

3.32 mi = __ yd
3.32 × 1760 = 5, 843.2 yd

Therefore, the longest red carpet in the world is 5 843.2 yd.

Problem Solving
Rica is 4 ft tall, while her sister is 42 in . Who is taller?

Solution: We will convert either Rica’s height or her sister’s height.

Convert Rica’s height, 4 ft to in.
4 ft = __ in
4 × 12 = 48 in

Therefore, Rica is taller since Rica’s height is 48 inches while her sister’s
height is 42 inches.
Problem Solving
Rica is 4 ft tall, while her sister is 42 in . Who is taller?

Solution: We will convert either Rica’s height or her sister’s height.

Convert her sister’s height, 42 in to ft.
42 in = __ ft
42 ÷ 12 = 3.5 ft

Therefore, Rica is taller since Rica’s height is 4 ft while her sister’s height
is 3.5 ft.
The meter is the basic unit of length in the
Metric or SI system. The meters is divided
into decimeters, centimeters and
millimeter. For longer distances the
decameter, hectometer, and kilometer are
used.
METRIC LINEAR MEASUREMENTS
1000 millimeters (mm) = 1 meter (m)
100 centimeters (cm) = 1 meter (m)
10 decimeters (dm) = 1 meter (m)
10 meters (m) = 1 decameter (dam)
100 meters (m) = 1 hectometer (hm)
1000 meters (m) = 1 kilometer (km)
Write the units per mark.
Let’s try

1) 3.45 km = ______dm

Four jumps to the right.

3.45 km = 34 500 dm
Let’s try

2)36.72 cm = _____m

Two jumps to the left.

36. 72 cm = 0.3672 m
Problem Solving
Mary buys a reel of thread for sewing. There are 10 m of thread
on the reel. She uses 210 cm. How much is left on the reel in
centimeters?
Solution: Convert 10 m to cm.

Two jumps to the right

10 m = 1000 cm
1000 cm – 210 cm = 790 cm
Therefore, there are 790 cm of thread left in the reel.
Problem Solving
How many meters high will a stack of 83 dictionaries be, if each
dictionary measures 20 cm?
Solution:
83 × 20 = 1660 𝑐𝑚
Convert 1660 cm to m.

two jumps to the left

1660 cm = 16.60 m
Therefore, the height of the stack of dictionaries is 16.60 m.
