I. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Introduction

Aloe barbadensis miller or commonly called as Aloe Vera is one of the oldest
mentioned plants on record due to its medicinal properties and health benefits. It is a
favorite herb of many nations of the world. Many ancient works including the Bible refer
to the use of Aloe Vera. The Bible mentions removing Christ for the cross and wrapping
his body in aloes and myrrh. Aloe vera is often called the “miracle plant” or the “nature
healer”. The name “aloe” is derived from the Arabic word “alloeh” or Hebrew word
“halal”, meaning bitter shiny substance, vera in Latin mean real. Due to its cactus like
feel, aloe is often mistakenly called a “dessert cactin Chinese culture, aloe Vera has been
an important ingredient in medical treatments. The treatment book Shi Shen described
aloe Vera as the “method of harmony” thus; it played a major role in the everyday life of
the Chinese.(Mehta,I.,History of Aloe Vera-A Magical Plant.,p22.,2017).
Aloe Vera is famous for its healing properties. It is historically used for curing
different ailment. It is believed that the first note of aloe Vera is found on the Sumerian
clay tablet that date back to 2100 B.C. But according Gertrude Baldwin on her book
entitled ‘The Benefits of the Use of Aloe Vera in Herbal Preparation’, states that the first
record of Aloe Vera use comes from the Egyptians and named it as the “plant of
immortality.
The magical plant is not only known for its medicinal properties but also used as
beauty regimen of women even before. A journal with a title Pharmacognosy &
Phytochemistry that was published in the year 2014 includes a research conducted by
Manvitha, Karkala and Bidya Busan that there are many stories about the use of aloe vera
as beauty care treatment: the Egyptian Queen Neferti known as the most beautiful
woman who ever lived and Queen Cleopatra VII used it as part of their regular beauty
regimes. Furthermore, the ancient Nile valley civilization of Kemet used aloe for beauty
care and embalming.
The Arab people discovered a way of separating the inner gel and the sap form
the outer rind. With their bare feet they crushed the leaves then they put the pulp into the

goatskin bags. The bags were then set in the sun to dry and the aloe would become a
powder. Arabs called aloe vera the “desert Lily”. (Baldwin.G.,Aloe Vera: The Benefits of
the Use of Aloe Vera in Herpbal Preparations.)
On the other hand, the Aloe Vera is prepared as drink to some people just like the
Japanese people who greatly values the plant, they called it the “royal plant”, its juice is
consumed as an elixir and samurai used if for embrofication .(Mehta,I.,History of Aloe
Vera-A Magical Plant.,p22.,2017).
Today, it is grown commercially in different parts of the world to meet the great
demand for aloe vera gel, juice, cosmetics, food and alternative medicine. In Japan, Aloe
Vera is commonly used as an ingredient in commercially available yogurt. In Korea,
China and USA, Aloe Vera is now popular cold juice drink. In India it’s often prepared
with curry which is taken along with bread.
The plant is grown in warm tropical areas and cannot survive freezing
temperature. Farmers in India regularly face problems like lack of rain, low ground water
level, soil degradation; therefore, the cultivation of Aloe Vera would be beneficial as it
requires minimum usage of water. According to the market demand, many processing
units established in the country for cultivation of Aloe Vera is expending day by day,
thus, it provides quick and regular income.

Amazing Health Benefits of Unripe Mango

Considered the ‘king of the fruits’, mangoes are loved by people of all age
groups. Apart from being tasty, mangoes also offer a number of health benefits. A recent
study shows that an unripe mango yields as much Vitamin C as 35 apples, 18 bananas,
nine lemons and three oranges. Native to Southeast Asia and India, the mango is the most
widely consumed fresh fruit in the world.

diseases.

The 8 Health Benefits of Raw Honey

According to new research, if you can switch out your intake of refined sugar and use
pure raw honey instead, the health benefits can be enormous.

It’s a pure, unfiltered and unpasteurized sweetener made by bees from the nectar of

flowers. Most of the honey consumed today is processed honey that’s been heated
and filtered since it was gathered from the hive. Unlike processed honey, raw honey
does not get robbed of its incredible nutritional value and health powers. It can help
with everything from low energy to sleep problems to seasonal allergies. Switching
to raw honey may even help weight-loss efforts when compared to diets containing
sugar or high fructose corn syrup.

1. Healthy Weight Management

Research studies have linked honey consumption with weight loss. A San Diego
State University study found that replacing sugar with honey can actually help
prevent packing on extra pounds and also lower blood sugar. The results also suggest
that in comparison to sugar, honey may lower serum triglycerides.

2. Counters Pollen Allergies

Raw honey contains bee pollen, which is known to ward off infections,
provide natural allergy relief and boost overall immunity. Honey’s ability to prevent
allergies is based on a concept called immunotherapy. How so? The bees in your

SPUP GRADUATE SCHOOL PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT D.Alejandrino

St. Paul University Philippines Tuguegarao City, Cagayan 3500

neighborhood go from flower to flower collecting pollen that causes you to suffer,
but when you consume local raw honey, you also consume that same offending local
pollen. After some time, an allergy sufferer may become less sensitive to this pollen
that previously caused problems and experience less seasonal allergy symptoms.
Many seasonal allergy sufferers have found local, raw honey to be helpful because it
desensitizes them to the fauna triggering their allergic reaction.

3. Natural Energy Source

Raw honey contains natural sugars (80 percent), water (18 percent), and minerals,
vitamins, pollen and protein (2 percent). It’s not surprising that honey has been called
“the perfect running fuel.” It provides an easily absorbed supply of energy in the
form of liver glycogen, making it ideal for energetic morning starts and as a pre- and
post-exercise energy source.

4. Antioxidant Powerhouse

Studies have shown that a daily dose of raw honey raises levels of health-
promoting antioxidants in the body. Antioxidants help block free radicals in the body
that cause disease. It also boosts the immune system, acting as a preventative against
any number of diseases. Honey contains polyphenols, which are powerful
antioxidants that have been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer.

One study fed 25 subjects about four tablespoons of honey per day for 29 days in
addition to their regular diets. When blood samples were taken at the start and end of
the study, researchers found a clear, direct link between honey consumption and an
increased level of disease-fighting polyphenolsin the blood.

5. Sleep Promoter

Raw honey promotes restorative sleep in two ways. By consuming honey before

bedtime, it restocks the liver’s glycogen supply and prevents the brain from

10
St. Paul University Philippines Tuguegarao City, Cagayan 3500

triggering a crisis search for fuel, which can wake you up. Secondly, eating raw
honey fosters the release of melatonin in the brain by creating a small spike in insulin
levels, which stimulates the release of tryptophan in the brain. Tryptophan converts
to serotonin, which is then converted to melatonin.

6. Wound and Ulcer Healer

Honey-infused bandages are known to aid healing. Peter Charles Molan at the
University of Waikato, New Zealand, has found in multiple studies that honey is a
natural antibacterial with wound-healing effects. He also found that honey reacts with
the body’s fluids to make hydrogen peroxide, creating an inhospitable environment
for bacteria.

7. Diabetes Aid

Consumption of raw honey can reduce the risk of developing diabetes and help aid
medication used to treat diabetes. The combination of raw honey and cinnamon can
be especially beneficial to healthy blood sugar management, as well as many other
health concerns like gingivitis and acne.

8. Natural Cough Syrup

Raw honey has been shown to be as effective in treating coughs as over-the-counter
commercial cough syrups. Increasing scientific evidence shows that a single dose of
honey can reduce mucus secretion and coughs. In one study, honey was just as
effective as diphenhydramine and dextromethorphan, common ingredients found in
over-the counter cough medicines. (17)

For a cough, a half teaspoon to two teaspoons of honey at bedtime is a studied and

recommended dosage for anyone over the age of one.

describe how prices vary as a result of the equilibrium between product availability at
each price (supply) and the desires of those with purchasing power at each price
(demand). Considering these concepts are imperative in understanding the market
economy in which many resource allocation decisions are made.
In order for me to look in to the demand and supply factor of Aloe Mangoe.

VII. NUTRITIONAL INFORMATION OF ALOE VERA

Anatomy of Aloe Vera

The plant has triangular, fleshy leaves with serrated edges, yellow tubular flowers and
fruits that contain numerous seeds. Each leaf is composed of three layers: 1) An inner
clear gel that contains 99% water and rest is made of glucomannans, amino acids, lipids,
sterols and vitamins. 2) The middle layer of latex which is the bitter yellow sap and
contains anthraquinones and glycosides. 3) The outer thick layer of 15–20 cells called as
rind which has protective function and synthesizes carbohydrates and proteins. Inside the
rind are vascular bundles responsible for transportation of substances such as water
(xylem) and starch (phloem).

Active components with its properties: Aloe vera contains 75 potentially active

constituents: vitamins, enzymes, minerals, sugars, lignin, saponins, salicylic acids and
amino acids.4
1. Vitamins: It contains vitamins A (beta-carotene), C and E, which are
antioxidants. It also contains vitamin B12, folic acid, and choline. Antioxidant
neutralizes free radicals.
2. Enzymes: It contains 8 enzymes: aliiase, alkaline phosphatase, amylase,
bradykinase, carboxypeptidase, catalase, cellulase, lipase, and peroxidase.
Bradykinase helps to reduce excessive inflammation when applied to the skin
topically, while others help in the breakdown of sugars and fats.
3. Minerals: It provides calcium, chromium, copper, selenium, magnesium,
manganese, potassium, sodium and zinc. They are essential for the proper
functioning of various enzyme systems in different metabolic pathways and few
are antioxidants.
4. Sugars: It provides monosaccharides (glucose and fructose) and polysaccharides:
(glucomannans/polymannose). These are derived from the mucilage layer of the
plant and are known as mucopolysaccharides. The most prominent
monosaccharide is mannose-6-phosphate, and the most common polysaccharides
are called glucomannans [beta-(1,4)-acetylated mannan]. Acemannan, a
prominent glucomannan has also been found. Recently, a glycoprotein with
antiallergic properties, called alprogen and novel anti-inflammatory compound,
C-glucosyl chromone, has been isolated from Aloe vera gel.7,8
5. Anthraquinones: It provides 12 anthraquinones, which are phenolic compounds
traditionally known as laxatives. Aloin and emodin act as analgesics,
antibacterials and antivirals.
6. Fatty acids: It provides 4 plant steroids; cholesterol, campesterol, β-sisosterol and
lupeol. All these have anti-inflammatory action and lupeol also possesses
antiseptic and analgesic properties.
7. Hormones: Auxins and gibberellins that help in wound healing and have anti-
inflammatory action.
8. Others: It provides 20 of the 22 human required amino acids and 7 of the 8
essential amino acids. It also contains salicylic acid that possesses anti-
inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Lignin, an inert substance, when
included in topical preparations, enhances penetrative effect of the other
ingredients into the skin. Saponins that are the soapy substances form about 3%
of the gel and have cleansing and antiseptic properties.
