BBA (IT) Assignment Answer Sheet

The document contains answers to 5 questions. Question 1 provides probabilities for drawing balls from two bags. Question 4 provides a short note on the Poisson distribution, describing it as a model for randomly occurring events and defining its probability mass function. Question 5 provides a short note on ANOVA, explaining that it splits variability in a data set into systematic and random factors, and that it allows comparing more than two groups to determine relationships between them.

Q1. "One bag contains 4 white and 2 black balls. Another bag contains 3
white and 5 black balls. If one ball is drawn from each bag, find the
probability that-
i. Both are white
ii. Both are black
iii. One is white and one is black."

Ans.
i. P(Both are white) = 4/6 x 3/8 = ¼
The probability of drawing 2 white balls is 1/4

ii. P(Both are black) = 2/6 x 5/8 = 5/24

The probability of drawing 2 black balls is 5/24

iii. P(one ball is white and one ball is black) = P(black ball from bag 1 and
white ball from bag 2 or white ball from bag 1 and black ball from bag 2)

= (2/6 x 3/8) + (4/6 x 5/8)

= 26/48
= 13/24

Hence, the probability of one ball being white and the other being black is
13/24.

Q4. Write a short note on Poisson Distribution.

Ans. The Poisson Process is the model we use for describing randomly
occurring events and by itself, isn’t that useful. We need the Poisson
Distribution to do interesting things like finding the probability of a number of
events in a time period or finding the probability of waiting some time until the
next event.

The Poisson Distribution probability mass function gives the probability of
observing k events in a time period given the length of the period and the
average events per time:

Poisson distribution for probability of k events in time period.

This is a little convoluted, and events/time * time period is usually simplified
into a single parameter, λ, lambda, the rate parameter. With this substitution, the
Poisson Distribution probability function now has one parameter:

Poisson distribution probability of k events in an interval.

Lambda can be thought of as the expected number of events in the interval.

Q.5 Write a short note on ANOVA.

Ans. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) is an analysis tool used in statistics that

splits an observed aggregate variability found inside a data set into two parts:
systematic factors and random factors. The systematic factors have a statistical
influence on the given data set, while the random factors do not. Analysts use
the ANOVA test to determine the influence that independent variables have on
the dependent variable in a regression study.
The t- and z-test methods developed in the 20th century were used for statistical
analysis until 1918, when Ronald Fisher created the analysis of variance
method.12 ANOVA is also called the Fisher analysis of variance, and it is the
extension of the t- and z-tests. The term became well-known in 1925, after
appearing in Fisher's book, "Statistical Methods for Research Workers."3 It was
employed in experimental psychology and later expanded to subjects that were
more complex.

The formula for ANOVA is,

F= MST/MSE

Where,

F=ANOVA coefficient
MST=Mean sum of squares due to treatment
MSE=Mean sum of squares due to error

What Does the Analysis of Variance Reveal?

The ANOVA test is the initial step in analysing factors that affect a given data
set. Once the test is finished, an analyst performs additional testing on the
methodical factors that measurably contribute to the data set's inconsistency.
The analyst utilizes the ANOVA test results in an f-test to generate additional
data that aligns with the proposed regression models.
The ANOVA test allows a comparison of more than two groups at the same
time to determine whether a relationship exists between them. The result of the
ANOVA formula, the F statistic (also called the F-ratio), allows for the analysis
of multiple groups of data to determine the variability between samples and
within samples.
