Looking Back
In the previous lessons, you learned how to cope with stress and how to use the
power of the mind in making and planning for a healthy life. We discussed about
understanding the left and right brain functions; explored the mind-mapping techniques
and how to develop our brain. Let’s consider the following questions:
1. What is the dominant side of the brain?
2. Is mind mapping important? Why or why not?
3. What can you do to get smarter?
3
Brief Introduction
In this chapter, we will look at the concept of mental health and well-being, and why
this is important, particularly to the adolescent. “Mental health is a state of well-being in
which an individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses
of life, can work productively, and is able to make a contribution to his or her
community” (WHO- April 13,2020).
Mental Health. It’s the way your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors affect your
life. Good mental health leads to positive self-image and in-turn, satisfying relationships
with friends and others.
Activity 1:
Instruction:
1. Choose an advertisement that promotes beauty product or health care.
2. Decide which advertisement that you will critique.
3. “Decode” the ad as they proceed through the worksheet by giving its
definition.
4. Present your worksheet and submit in the google classroom or thru the
messenger.
Instructor Note:
There is no formal answer key to accompany the “definition” sheet- the intent is for
you to arrive at your own understanding of the techniques and impact of media
messages, what motivates the advertising industry and its effect on the body image.
4
Activity 2:
Activity 3:
“I keep fighting voices in my mind that say I’m not enough. Every single lie that tells
me I will never measure up. Am I more than just the sum of every high and every low?
Remind me once again just who I am, because I need to know… You say I am loved
when I can’t feel a thing. You say I am strong when I think I am weak. And You say I
am held when I am falling short. And when I don’t belong, You say I am Yours. And I
believe, what You say of me”.

Processing Questions:
Remember
➢ Mental health is the way your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors affect your life.
➢ All media images and messages are constructions. They are NOT reflections of
reality.
➢ Self-esteem is all about how much you feel you are worth – and how much you
feel other people value you.
➢ Body Image is how you view your physical self- including whether you feel you
are attractive and whether others like your looks.
5
➢ There are three that influences a person’s self-esteem: puberty and
development, media images and outside influences, families and school.
➢ People with Anorexia have a real fear of weight gain and a distorted view of their
body size and shape. Many teens with anorexia restrict their food intake by
dieting, fasting, or excessive exercise.
➢ With Bulimia, people might binge eat (eat to excess) and then try to compensate
in extreme ways, such as making themselves throw up or exercising all the time,
to prevent weight gain.
➢ Suicide is a leading cause of death among young people ages 15-24. At least
90% of those who die by suicide have mental illness. If a friend mentions
thoughts of suicide or self-harm, you NEED to tell an adult.
➢ There are disorders that are associated with stress, anxiety and depression.
These are; ADHD, Anxiety Panic disorder, Autism spectrum, Bipolar, Depression,
PTSD, and Schizophrenia.
➢ ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is pretty common and can make
it hard to focus and sit still. ADHD according to American Psychiatric Association
(APA) is one of the most common mental disorders affecting children.
➢ Anxiety (Panic Disorder) Have you ever been really nervous? A Panic disorder
can happen anywhere, any time. You may feel terrified and overwhelmed, even
though you’re not in danger.
6
➢ Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that’s
triggered by a terrifying event either experiencing or witnessing it and symptoms
may include flashback nightmares and severe anxiety. Seeking mental health
professional can help together with the support of friends and family.
➢ Schizophrenia can make the brain think it sees or hears things that don’t exist.
They may start to think that people are trying to control them or read their minds.
Treatment can be through medication and therapy together with the support of
family and friends.
➢ There are five popular steps to improve mental health and well-being: connect,
be active, keep learning, be generous and take notice.
➢ Here are some strategies for supporting someone with mental health concerns:
1. Encourage the person to seek help and support from an adult.
2.Spend time with the person, listen to his/her concerns
3.Be hopeful; help them feel like their life will get better.
4.Stand by them. Invite your friend to things that you are busy with.
5. Learn as much as you can about mental illness so that you will understand
what is going on in them.
6.If you are a close friend or family member of someone with a mental health
problem, make sure that you get help as well.
7.Put the person’s life before your friendship. If the person mentions thoughts of
suicide, don’t keep it a secret, even if the person has asked you to.
➢ Healthy eating nourishes the body, including the brain, and supports mental
health. Healthy eating may lower risk of mental illness.
➢ Most teens need 8-10 hours of sleep every night. Problems may arise from not
being fully rested like irritability, difficulty in concentration, behavior problems,
prone to accident and depression.
7
3. Turn off electronic devices in the bedroom like TV’s, computers, cellphones,
and tablets.
4. Avoid stimulating activities like exercise, computer games and talking on the
phone 30 minutes prior to bedtime. Reading can help you fall asleep.
6. You may visit a doctor if you are having a sleep problem in spite of trying the
above tips.
