1. illustrate a subset, universal set, null set, cardinality of set;
2. give an example of a subset, universal set, null set, cardinality of set; and
3. show enthusiasm in performing any assigned task

“4 PICS 1 WORD”
Instructions: The teacher will group the students into three and each group will describe the set of
picture in one word that will be presented in front by using the scramble letters beside the pictures
in 15 seconds and write it on the board being provided by the teacher. The score will depend on
the spinning wheel the leader of the group will spin after they got the correct answer.

ANNOTATION: This activity has integration to the subject TLE-Cookery


specifically in the kitchen where kitchen utensils were arranged by set.
B. Lesson Proper
a. ACTIVITY
The same group in the motivation, each group will receive a topic and they will
discuss it in a group collaboratively. Afterwards, they will be going to present it in front
of their classmates.

b. ANALYSIS
Instruction: Let the students answer the following questions.
1. What can you infer from the given activity?
2. Who among of you know already the purpose of the set?
3. What do you think is the connection of set in our daily lives?

UNIVERSAL SET
The universal set U is the set that contains all objects under consideration.
Examples:
1. Set U contains the set of whole numbers.
U= {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, …}

2. Set U contains the set of all letters of the English Alphabet.


U = {a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h, i, j, k, l, m, n, o, p, q, r, s, t, u, v, w, x, y, z}

SUBSETS
Given any two sets A and B, if every element in A is also an element in B, then A is a subset of B.
The symbol “A ⊆ B” is read A is a subset of B.

*Note: Every set is a subset of itself and empty set is also a subset of every set.
Example:
1. O = {red, blue, yellow}

The possible subsets of O are;

CARDINALITY OF SETS
The cardinal number of set A, denoted by n(A), is the number of elements in set A. Thus, in A =
{1,3,5,7}, n(A) = 4 because set A contains 4 elements.

Example:
Find the cardinality of the following sets.
Examples:
1. Set D is the set of vowels in English alphabet.
Solution: D = {𝑎,𝑒,𝑖,𝑜,𝑢}
Answer: n(D) = 5

2. Set R is the set of letters in the word “difficulty”.


Solution: R = {𝑑, 𝑖, 𝑓, 𝑐, 𝑢, 𝑙, 𝑡, 𝑦}
Answer: n(R) = 8
NULL SET
A set with no element is an empty set or null set. The symbol for empty set is { } or ∅.
Examples:
1. Set I is the set of months with 35 days.
T = {} or T = ∅

2. Set E is the set of crying trees.


E = {} or E = ∅

ANNOTATION: This topic has integration to the subject SCIENCE, where we used
elements specifically the Periodic Table in Chemistry.

d. APPLICATION (Oral and Written activity)


Instructions: The teacher will group the students by two’s and one member will answer
the question of the teacher or provide what is being ask and the other will write it on the
board for checking.

1. Set M is the set of Odd number between 1-10.


2. Set B is the set of Even number from 1-5.
3. Set C is the set of Negative integers from 1-10.
4. Set D is the set of counting number between 1 and 2.
5. If set H is the set of Even number from 1-10. What is the cardinality of set H?

specifically in ARALING PANLIPUNAN where we found different regions in the
Philippines; and ENGLISH where we used commas and braces; ARTS and SCIENCE
where we study colors and combination of colors.
