Module 1 – Nature of Teaching and Teacher Roles

Lesson I. What is Teaching?
1. Teaching as a Profession

 LEARNING ACTIVITY 1
1. By the use of graphic organizer, present the elements of a profession.
2. Why does a profession like teaching require long years of initial professional education
and continuing professional development after that long, arduous initial professional
education?
 Teaching is a continuous profession, and one of the reasons for this is that it
focuses on education. Education is developmental learning is dynamic. Teaching
requires a long year of initial professional education and continuing professional
development for aspiring teachers to acquire a piece of adequate knowledge and
skills.

3. By way of an acrostic, explain the elements of a profession.

Professionals begin their careers by completing a four-year course that fulfils the first
P
criteria, Initial Professional Education.
Regulatory bodies like Commission on Higher Education (CHED) ensure that programs
R offered by leading universities are highly accredited and meet international accreditation
standards.
O One of the most vital in the teaching profession and other professions is licensing.
From a 4-year course, teachers undergo a series of tests, culminate in becoming a
professional teacher. For professional development, teachers need to undergo schooling
F
for additional education because it helps to assure a minimum competency throughout
their career.
E Every professional should be a part of such organizations to
S simplify as a member of the community and
study a specific profession, the interests of persons involved in that field, and the public
S
interest. They are the Professional Societies.
In the code of ethics, teachers must fulfil to protect the rights of all students. Although, it is
I not an essential part of a teacher's training and certification. It is also necessary for the
teaching profession to complete the final component of the professional, which is
Organizational Certification is a response to the reality that individual competence is not
O sufficient to guarantee adequate levels of professional service organizations.
Characteristics can have much influence on an individual.
Not only be certified as individuals but so should their companies, as it allows them to
N
demonstrate their dedication to excellence in all aspects of their work.

4. Here is a line from Bernard Shaw’s play: Man, and Superman: “Those who can, do;
those who can’t, teach.”

People who are able to do something well can do that thing for a living, while people who
are not able to do anything that well make a living by teaching. Having learned the elements of
a profession, do you agree with Bernard Shaw? Explain your answer.
 No, I disagree with Bernard Shaw's line from Man and Superman. If you love
what you do, it does not matter what you do for a living. That specific sharp
shows someone who disliked the teacher(s) and believes she is brilliant in
expressing this. Those who can, do; those who can do it all, teach, I choose
to rephrase that statement.

2. Teaching as a Vocation and Mission

 LEARNING ACTIVITY 2
1. Read this letter given by a private school principal to his teachers on the first day of a
new school year. It may make your humanizing mission in teaching crystal clear.

Dear Teacher:
I am a survivor of a concentration camp.
My eyes saw what no man should witness:

- Gas chambers built by learned engineers.

- Children poisoned by educated physicians.
- Infants killed by trained nurses.
- Women and babies shot and burned by high school and college graduates.

So, I am suspicious of education.

My request is: Help your students become human.
Your efforts must never produce learned monsters,
Skilled psychopaths, and *Eichmann’s.

Reading, writing, arithmetic are important only if

They are to make our children more human.

Explain your mission as a professional teacher by helping children become more human.

2. Watch “Discovering Your Life’s True Calling – Lou Sabrina Ongkiko at YouTube. Based on
the video that you just watched, what is our life’s true calling? How can you apply that in
your calling to teach?

Lesson II. The Roles of a Teacher

A. As a Person
1. Teachers Have Different Talents and Skills

 LEARNING ACTIVITY 1
Critical Questions: Reflect and write your answer to the following questions.

1. What are the personal characteristics of an ideal teacher?

 An ideal teacher for me has a love for his students and has a passion
for teaching. He is an optimistic person, has a fair judgement, is
compassionate to the students, and must be credible in discipline and
class management skills. Being a good role model for all students,
whatever he teaches, is one of the most significant contributions that
he can give to society.

2. What talents and skills do you have that can be shared or used when you
become a full-fledged teacher?
 I have a good sense of humor, enjoy listening to music, and love to
cook. I can use my skills or abilities to stay more connected and
updated with my students, especially the younger generations. Also,
being a motivator because as a teacher, you are the one who helps
students encourage themselves to study and be responsible. As well
as to mold not just their intellect but also their character.

3. Think of a teacher whom you consider to be talented and skillful in his/her

teaching.
 I remember a great teacher of mine when I was a junior high school
student. She initiates lively discussions with the entire class. She's a
talented individual who has really inspired and motivated me. She
influences me to learn more about science and math. She brags a lot
about her accomplishments. That, however, does not seem awful to
me. It motivated me to work harder simply to be like her.

2. Teachers Have Different Needs

 LEARNING ACTIVITY 2
Republic of the Philippines
PANGASINAN STATE UNIVERSITY
Lingayen, Pangasinan
College of Education
Teacher Education Specialization Courses
1st Semester, S.Y. 2020-2021

Critical Questions: Reflect and write your answer to the following questions.

1. What other needs of teachers can you identify?

 A teacher, in my opinion, need a secure atmosphere with enough
facilities. Teachers must also pursue their own professional
development, and they must be assisted by supportive, efficient, and
efficient school leadership. The outcome will contribute to a connection
in students will discover that their instructor has genuine interests in
teaching. It will also reassure students that they understand the course
content, which is evident in exam outcomes.

2. As future teachers, what do you think is the best way that the government can do
to meet the needs of teachers?
 The government could also assist in developing parenting programs to
help bridge the gap between schools, educators, parents, and
students. Give the necessities that the teacher requires to educate or
to survive during this epidemic. After all, school districts already
provide social and economic services (counselling, social assistance,
medical referrals, and so on), so why not include this component early
on.

3. Do you believe that teachers are treated unfairly compared to other professions?
Why?
 No, since the law is designed to apply equally to everyone. Every
profession has its own set of standards and privileges. Teachers face
more attention than law enforcement or politicians since the law is
designed to apply equally to everyone. Teachers are frequently
required to purchase their own teaching materials and continuing
education courses with little financial gain. All professions have
different challenges, and I believe teachers are compensated well.

3. Teachers Have Individual Rights

 LEARNING ACTIVITY 3
Critical Questions: Reflect and write your answer to the following questions.

1. Examine the Bill of Rights in Article III of the 1987 Philippine Constitution. Do you
think all teachers are enjoying their rights as citizen?
 Yes, I think teachers are exercising their rights as citizens, but there is
no assurance that this is the case for all of them. Some are in
unfortunate circumstances in which they assert their rights due to a
variety of conditions. The legislation is equitable to all people, and
teachers get government benefits such as a 13th-month salary,
pensions, etc.

2. What is your opinion about teachers joining anti-government rallies?

 For me, there is nothing wrong with teachers attending and
participating in anti-government demonstrations. Protests against the
government are social indicators of a functioning democracy. They are
means of connecting with the people and informing them about the
general state of the society, particularly at the grassroots level. Protest
activities are also one of many ways to inspire teachers to become
human rights advocates.

3. How do we encourage teaches to become human rights advocates in their

communities?
Republic of the Philippines
PANGASINAN STATE UNIVERSITY

1st Semester, S.Y. 2020-2021

 Everyone has the liberty to teach anything they choose unless they are
being compensated by teaching only certain subjects. The problem
with government-paid educators is that if they explain the origins and
meaning of inalienable rights, they rapidly find themselves discussing
the purpose of government. Persuade them and show them that a
teacher is an advocate for it, that teacher will make a significant
difference.

B. The Teacher as a Professional

 LEARNING ACTIVITY 1
Critical Questions: Reflect and write your answer to the following questions.

1. Looking at the triumphs and failures of teachers today, do you think that teaching
is still the noblest profession? Explain your answer.
 Examining the successes and failings of today's instructors. I still believe
that teaching is the noblest job. Because no doctors, nurses, or engineers
will be available. If there isn't a teacher, there won't be any architects or
many other professionals. There is no professional without an instructor. A
teacher is, without a doubt, a stepping stone to achievement.

2. What are the things that should be improved in the professional life of teachers?
 A teacher's success is determined by the achievement of their students.
Always keep high expectations for your students. Make it a point to
believe in their ability to achieve and to push them to their limits. Even if
they fail, encourage them to try again and work harder. This approach will
aid you in enticing individuals out of their comfort zones. So that they can
pursue success knowing that you will be there to catch them if they fall.

3. Interview a model professional teacher in your school. What made him/her an

outstanding professional?
 I've prepared lessons in advance, with clear objectives that students can
see. By the time the students come, I'll be in the classroom and ready to
teach. I've considered every aspect of the lesson; I'm organized and cater
to their pupils' various learning needs.
-Michelle S. Dizon, LPT

C. The Teacher as a Community Leader and Social Advocate

 LEARNING ACTIVITY 1
Critical Questions: Reflect and write your answer to the following questions.

1. How can we engage teachers to be good community leaders?

 Teachers' initiative and leadership abilities provide students with diverse
academic and social possibilities in the classroom. Not every teacher can
be a good leader. For those individuals to excel, they must give the
chance to explore and express themselves. Simply standing out as the
teacher's voice at school board meetings will help them establish your
status as a leader.

2. What forms of advocacies should a teachers participate in the community?

 Have advocacy that will promote respect, understanding, love and peace.
By exhibiting and respect for one another and treating everyone fairly, we
may serve as excellent role models for our students. Creating rules and
procedures that encourage active participation in school and community

life. As well as opportunities for students to participate in school decision-

making could help us set a positive example for our students.

3. Can you identify teachers who are good community leaders and advocates? Set
an interview with them. What are the things they do to serve in the community?
 Awareness programs generally are. They visit a neighborhood and
provide school materials to youngsters and offer meals to malnourished
children. A teacher traded goods her plants for the bond paper so she
could create modules for her students.
 Teachers I spoke with participate in charitable activities and help their
students to give back to their communities. For example, they participated
in Backpack Buddies and discreetly distributed food. They do, however,
work together as a team. While helping at a local elementary school, they
saw different activities.
-Michelle S. Dizon, LPT

D. The Teacher as a Model of Good Character

 LEARNING ACTIVITY 1
Critical Questions: Reflect and write your answer to the following questions.

1. What are the problems and issues related to teacher character and behavior that
you are aware of?
 Classroom favoritism is viewed as fundamentally unfair and adds to the
inequalities that affect student success and failure. Such bias can affect a
teacher's reputation. Students who are not given preferential treatment are
more prone to acquire unfavorable views about the educator. Teaching is
not an easy career to quit; it necessitates a depth of compassion that is
often unpleasant.

2. What are the factors that influence the values system and character of teachers
today?
 Several factors influence classroom learning, including teacher
communication expectations, socioeconomic situations, and school
regulations those governing attendance and discipline. First is their
religion which has a significant impact on the educators. Affects their value
system and personalities. Also, their educational background and culture.

3. Who among your former teachers have greatly influenced you to become a
teacher?
 Ma’am Michelle Dizon is one of the teachers that has had the most
influence on my life. She is concerned about the well-being of her students
and always gives appropriate advice. Many of us consider her a second
mother, and I appreciate everything she does for us.

E. The Teacher as an Expert

 LEARNING ACTIVITY 1
Critical Questions: Reflect and write your answer to the following questions.

1. How can we help develop expert teachers?

 Expert teachers make a conscious effort to ensure that their teaching
intentions match the learning objectives for their learners. Listening to
students solve issues might indicate more about their understanding than
a quiz or exam scores. Expert teachers are conscious of what they are
Republic of the Philippines
PANGASINAN STATE UNIVERSITY

College of Education
Teacher Education Specialization Courses
1st Semester, S.Y. 2020-2021

doing; they monitor and adapt their teaching behaviors to bring out the
best in their students.

2. What are the factors that have contributed to the mediocrity of teaching
profession in the Philippines?
 These factors include general mediocrity, the incapacity to teach students
from different cultural and language backgrounds, and uncaring and
substandard faculty. Low academic standards, particularly for low-income
and minority learners, a community that does not demand educational
excellence from its schools. Also, a demoralizing and weakening effect on
the school's immune system to maintain its viability as a great equalizer.

3. Identify and expert teacher. Set an interview with him or her. What made him/her
as an expert teacher? What lessons can be learned from his or her life as an
expert teacher?
 Teaching is all about offering a consistent service while also being able to
adapt to changing circumstances. I strive to develop a positive relationship
with the people in my school. Take some time after each lesson to write
down your highs and lows so you can perform better in class the next
time. Finally, it's critical to rely on your colleagues.
 I work hard to build great relationships with the students in my classroom.
My curriculum is differentiated, and I am a strong advocate for my
students. I collaborate with my course team to build our curriculum.
Working hard and diligently is the most essential life lesson you can
acquire. Teaching is all about providing reliable service while also
adapting to changing conditions. It is vital to be flexible in all situations. It
is also critical to consider things. After each lesson, take some time to jot
down your highs and lows so you can do better in class the next time.
Finally, you must rely on your coworkers.
-Michelle S. Dizon, LPT

Lesson III. Challenges in Teaching

1. Multicultural Classrooms

 LEARNING ACTIVITY 1
Critical Questions: Reflect and write your answer to the following questions.

1. How do we encourage teachers to develop culturally relevant and responsive

curriculum For their learners?
 Teaching English Language Learners (ELLs) to read, write, and talk in
their native language helps them retain their culture while also bridging
language barriers. Examine your classroom setting for opportunities to
include cultural assets into what you're teaching. You must first get to
know a student's culture before you can tap into it - this is the foundation
to culturally responsive teaching.

2. How can teachers incorporate cultural literacy in classroom pedagogy and in

the content of their course?
 Teachers can encourage students to identify places and communities
where they feel like cultural insiders and then help them make in-person
or online relationships with these communities. Teachers can include
cultural literacy by providing students with activities that allow
communicating their personal experiences with the lessons, whether
orally or in writing. Teachers will learn about his, her students' cultural
backgrounds as a result, which will serve as a guide for picking the
appropriate course content for the class.

3. What is your idea of the implementation of Mother Tongue-based Multilingual

Education?
 MTB-MLE (Mother Tongue Based-Multilingual Education) has created a
role in the educational field as a practical and efficient method. It offers a
fair foundation for training future generations to be more adaptable, if
productive, participants in a globalized and international world. It was
also beneficial for students attempting to flourish in a foreign language,
such as Filipino students enrolled in English courses.

4. How do we promote equity and social justice in our school?

 Setting standards that will encourage participation and openness is an
essential element of achieving equality and diversity. Make it clear how
your class will be respectful to one another and exchange ideas,
opinions, and beliefs. Teach students how to disagree politely. Clarify
how students will interact with one another and share their thoughts.

2. Learner-centered Teaching

 LEARNING ACTIVITY 1
Critical Questions: Reflect and write your answer to the following questions.

1. How can learner-centered education be applied in instructional planning?

 Learner-centered education is a teaching technique in which teachers
and students collaborate to include two parties in the instructional and
learning processes. This course will teach you all the strategies, ideas,
and resources you'll need to adapt your classroom into a learner-
centered environment. You may get all of the techniques, insights, and
instruments you need to transform your classroom into one that focuses
on the student.

2. What are examples of learner-centered instructional strategies?

 Learner-centered instructional strategies include inquiry-based, project-
based, and problem-based learning. Students can use choice boards to
pick activities such as Jigsaw/Stations/Centers, to practice a skill or
indicate understanding. Flipped classrooms, Problem-based Learning,
and Problem-Based Learning are employing relevant. Also, real-life
scenarios teach students abilities skills that they may apply even after
they graduate.

3. What are examples of constructivist teaching strategies and approaches?

 Constructivist teaching is a form of Inquiry-based learning (IBL) that
allows pupils to ask their own questions and seek answers through
research and direct observation. It is a type of cooperative learning in
which students work together to solve problems. Allow pupils to teach
each other in pairs, such as in the Problem-based Learning (PBL) or
Question-and-Analysis (Q&A) classes.

3. Multi-grade Classes

 LEARNING ACTIVITY 1
Critical Questions: Reflect and write your answer to the following questions.

1. How can the community support teachers assigned to handle multigrade

classes in their respective areas?
 The educational authorities should focus on altering teachers' attitudes
about multi-grade teaching and rural schools. Providing them with the
Republic of the Philippines
PANGASINAN STATE UNIVERSITY

College of Education
Teacher Education Specialization Courses
1st Semester, S.Y. 2020-2021

resources and assistance they need to overcome any challenges. Due to

declining school enrollment, particularly in rural regions, the demand for
class combining is increasing. Simultaneously, to achieve fairness,
students must acquire information, skills, and attitudes suitable to their
age group as students.

2. What are the instructional strategies that can be effective in multigrade classes?
 According to the study's findings, classroom management, collaborative
learning, differentiated instruction, linking teaching to real-life
circumstances, incorporating technology in teaching and instructor
flexibility are among the multi-grade instructors' classroom techniques. In
multi-grade teaching, the instructor can use techniques, such as direct
observation, peer group student mentorship, lesson-oriented teaching,
group learning, and the supervisory method. A single teacher may be
required to handle two, three, or five classes at once.

3. If you were assigned to teach in a multigrade class, how will you plan to
address the needs of your students?
 Prioritize students over special needs. Before start any class, engage
students' attention, model the Behaviour you want them to display, and
utilize low-profile intervention. When referring to a disease that affects
persons with special needs, do not use the term "sickness. Avoid using
colloquialisms and emphasize talents rather than limitations.

4. ICT Integration

 LEARNING ACTIVITY 1
Critical Questions: Reflect and write your answer to the following questions.

1. How can teachers encourage students to use ICT responsibly?

2. Do you believe that computers can soon replace traditional schools?

3. What are the best practices of ICT integration in teaching and learning that you
know?

5. Brain-based Education

 LEARNING ACTIVITY 1
Critical Questions: Reflect and write your answer to the following questions.

1. What are teaching strategies that can be used in implementing brain-based

education principles?

2. How can teachers organize instruction for brain-based education?
