The Pinpeat term is derived from the combination of two musical instruments including
Pin (harp) and Vadja (Kong called Kongpeat).

The Pinpeat is a Cambodian musical ensemble or an orchestra that usually accompanies

ceremonial music of the royal courts and temples. Music is always part of their court dances,
masked plays, shadow plays, and religious ceremonies.

Arak was music for religious and healing purposes, dating to "animist spiritual beliefs" of ancient

Cambodia. Traditionally it was used to "drive out illness," and used flute, drum, tro, chapei and kse
diev.

Music of Indonesia
An archipelago of over seventeen
thousand islands, Indonesia has
developed a rich and diverse musical
culture influenced by the various
ethnic and religious groups which
have settled there. The first track,
“Ile-Ile”, is a striking Bata (non-
Muslim Indonesian from Sumatra)

Music of Myanmar

Saung Gauk The Music of Myanmar (or

Burma) has similarities with many other
musical traditions in the region, including
Chinese music and Thai music, probably
because its longest land border is shared
with China. Saung-gauk is an arched harp
with a long neck carved from a tree root,
from which 13 silk strings would have
extended from tuning pegs to the body.

The top of the body is covered with animal hide, pierced in four places. It is painted black
and gilt and decorated with stylised flower heads inlaid with mica, as well as a stylised bodhi
tree leaf at the ends of the string bar.

acculturated music), popular and contemporary art music. Classical and folk music emerged
during the pre-colonial period and exists in the foprm of vocal, dance and theatrical music such as
Nobat, Mak Yong, Mak Inang, Dikir Barat, Ulek mayang and Menora. The syncretic music
developed during the post-Portuguese period(16th century) and contains elements from both local
music and foreign elements of Arabian, Persian, Indian, Chinese and Western musica; and
theatrical sources. Among genres of this music are Zapin, Ghazal, Dondang Sayang, Mata-
kantiga, Joget, Jikey, Boria and Bangsawan.

6
Malay music spans from music for various theatrical forms such as wayang kulit,
bangsawan and dance dramas as well as story-telling, to folk songs and music of dances,
royal ceremonies, martial arts (Silat), life cycle events, and religious occasions. Many forms
of traditional Malay music and performing arts appear to have originated in the Kelantan-
Pattani region with influence from India, China, Thailand and Indonesia. The music is based
around percussion instruments, the most important of which is the gendang (drum).

Some examples of musical ensembles and types of performances in

Malaysia

This is a gong-based musical ensemble commonly

used in funerals and weddings in East Malaysia.

in groups and often in a competitive manner usually
with percussion instrumental accompaniment or
sometimes without instruments at all.

C. Readings:

The Southeast Asian subregions particularly, Cambodia, , Indonesia, , Malaysia,

and Myanmar accommodate hundreds of ethnic groups. Thousands of different styles of
music are present as a result of regional groups speaking many different languages all
over the subregion of Asia. Regionalism is usually accepted and celebrated, however, it
is sometimes suppressed by the people, even though countries from southeast Asia are
trying to construct national cultures. Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, and Christianity are
the paramount faiths in Southeast Asia. Throughout history to the present time,
instrumental and vocal music has been centralized and focused on the religious life of
subregional Asia. Urbanization has helped to assimilate musical and religious practices.
Although modernization has put a significant threat on the distinctive regional music
traditions, most countries in the region have maintained their own unique style and
nature of music that encapsulates various periods of development in music, culture, and
belief.

D. Examples:

Mohori of Cambodia

This another form of traditional music was to entertain the courts of Cambodian and
usually played by a woman. This music made for noblemen, focusing on themes and
moods to “delight their souls”.

PART I. ARTS
A. Introduction:

In this lesson, you will learn about the elements and principles of arts and crafts inspired by the
cultures of Southeast Asia and let you discover its contribution to the history of the world of arts. It was
developed to help you appreciate the artifacts and art objects in terms of their utilization and their distinct
use of art elements and principles.
B. Discussions
Indonesia
Batik is an Indonesian-Malay word, believed to be related to the Malay word titik, which means
“point”, “dot”, or “drop”. The “drop” action refers to the process of dyeing the fabric by making use of
resist technique: covering areas of cloth with a dye-
resistant substance (usually hot wax) to prevent them from
absorbing colors.
There are two categories of batik designs:
1. Geometric design
2. Free form design
The tradition of batik making, specifically made in
Figure 1-https://www.silverkris.com/history-indonesian-batik/
the island of Java, is best known in Indonesia. With diverse
patterns influenced by many cultures, Indonesian batik has a long history of acculturation. When it comes to
pattern, technique, and the quality of workmanship, Indonesian batik is the most developed one.
Batik pattern in Java can be divided into three main elements:
1. klowongan or the main decorative motif
2. isen-isen
3. decorative motif as filler
Indonesian batik patterns are usually symbolic. Infants are carried in batik slings decorated with symbols
designed to bring the child luck, and certain batik designs are reserved for brides and bridegrooms, as well as
their families.
Malaysia
The most common motifs of Malaysian batik are
leaves and flowers. Designs that show animals are rare
because Islam norms forbid animal images as decoration,
except the butterfly theme.
The Malaysian batik also is known for its geometrical
designs like spirals. The patterns are larger and simpler. To
Figure 2-https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q
be able to put more vibrant colors, more brush painting is applied. The colors tend to be lighter and more
vibrant than deep colored Javanese batik.
In Malaysia, the states of Kelantan and Terengganu are considered the cradle where batik first
flourished, reaching even Singapore’s shores. There are two main types of batik that are produced there:
1. Hand painted – the artist uses the canting, a small copper container with one or more different-sized
pipes.
2. Block printed – is done by welding together strips of metal to form a metal block. The metal block
is then dipped into molten wax and pressed against the fabric to make a pattern.
Thailand
Thai silk is produced from the cocoons of Thai
silkworms. It is mainly produced in Khorat which is the center of
the silk industry in Thailand. Thai weavers from this region raise
the caterpillars on a steady diet of mulberry leaves. Today, it is
considered to be one of the finest arts in the world, a product of
a unique manufacturing process and bearing unique patterns and Figure 3-https://www.diethelmtravel.com/wpcontent

colors.
Cambodia
Silk weaving in Cambodia dates to as early as the first century since textiles were used for trading.
Modern textiles have traces of motifs imitating clothing details on ancient stone sculptures.
There are two main types of Cambodian weaving:
1. Ikat technique (Khmer term: chongkiet) – to create
patterns, weavers tie and dye portions of weft yarn before
weaving begins.

Figure 4- https://www.indonesia-travel.com/cdn/wordpress

2. Uneven twill – it yields single or two-color fabrics,

which are produced by weaving three threads so that the
color of one thread dominates on one side of the fabric,
while the two others determine the color on the reverse
side.

Figure 5-https://i.pinimg.com/originals/58/ea/14/
Cotton textiles have also played a significant role in Cambodian culture.
Krama, the traditional check scarves worn almost universally by Cambodians,
is made of cotton.

Laos
According to Lao tradition, stories were weaved in the intricate dense
patterns and motifs of textiles. Most diverse of these stories are the ones woven
into a Sihn – the Lao women’s ankle-long skirt patterns are unique to each skirt.

Figure 6-http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files
Vietnam
Golden thread silks were born in Vietnam. Many of
our Vietnamese fabrics originated from Ha Dong, the center
of weaving and sericulture (silkworm production), old
jacquard looms are still used. Some popular Vietnamese
fabric ranges are:
1. Shantung taffeta – is slightly thinner and less

irregular. Often used for bridal gowns.
2. Bengaline weave – is a great looking, thick grained
taffeta. It is durable plain weave fabric that is characterized by widthwise cords formed by using fine
warp yarns and course weft yarns.
3. Ebony satin – all-natural lustrous silk hand-woven in southern Vietnam and naturally dyed using
ebony fruit pods. It was revitalized by the designer Vo Viet Chung.
Brunei
Brunei’s traditional textile is also called batik but it is uniquely different from Indonesia, Malaysia, and
Singapore. Its designs have their national flower simpur, sumboi-sumboi (pitcher plant) and Brunei’s
traditional design of air mule. These are the techniques used in Brunei’s batik: airbrushing, cracking, bubble,
rainbow, sprinkle, geometry, and marble. These can be applied on fabrics such as cotton, chiffon, linen, and
brocade.
Batik can be done in four ways:
1. Hand-drawn 3. Using metal block
2. Screen printing 4. Digital printing

Elements and Principles of Arts and Crafts in Southeast Asia
Elements of art are stylistic features that are included within an art piece to help the artist
communicate. The seven most common elements include line, shape, texture, form, space, color and value,
with the additions of mark making and materiality.
The art of Indochina and the East Indies called Southeast Asian Art includes: Thailand, Cambodia,
Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia and Vietnam. The Philippines is sometimes included as being on the
far reaches of Eastern Southeast Asia.
The cultures of Southeast Asia are marked and influenced by several outside factors.
On the one hand they are historically overshadowed by the great empires of nearby India and China,
and on the other, they have been colonized and suppressed by a variety of different nations, all of different
cultures and languages. This gives Southeast Asia, on one hand, a background of shared influences, and on
another, entirely differing influences.
How are the elements of arts used in Southeast Asian countries?
In Thailand, scriptures of the Buddha have smooth oval faces expressing the spiritual nature of the
Buddha. They based the look of the Buddha on Pali texts that directed that he has “skin so smooth that dust
cannot stick to it”, “legs like a deer”, hands like lotuses about to bloom”, “head like an egg”, and many other
dictates.
The Vietnam Dong Son drums cast in bronze with details of geometric patterns and narratives of the
lives and conquests of the culture.
Contemporary Indochina and the East Indies colorful and detailed designs in batik (a dye painted
fabric). They have the geometric design of Indonesian fabric and the floral design of Singapore.

PART I. HEALTH

A. Introduction:
In this module, you will learn that sexuality is a natural part of the life of a human being. It is
about being a man or a woman. Most important aspects are masculine and feminine identification.
Sexuality involves the name given at birth, the toys played with, the garments worn, the buddies
played with and the roles and responsibilities included at home. It provides a sense of self-worth
when sexual understanding is learned.

B. Discussions:
Sexuality - it refers to people’s sexual interest in and attraction to others, as well as their capacity
to have erotic experiences and responses. It is experienced and expressed in thoughts, fantasies, desires,
beliefs, attitudes, values, behaviors, practices, roles and relationships. Sexuality is influenced by the
interaction of biological, psychological, social, economic, political, cultural, legal, historical, religious
and spiritual factors. (WHO, 2006a, updated 2010). Is an essential part of what we do and who we are.
It is the way in which we experience and express ourselves as human beings. It is the entire expression
of an individual’s self-concept. Sexuality involves the physical, mental, social, emotional and ethical
aspects of one’s personality.
Sexuality is a natural and healthy part of life. It is everything about being a male or female. It’s the
most important aspect in masculine or feminine identification. It involves the name given at birth, the
toys played with, the garments worn, the buddies played with, the roles and responsibilities at home.
Sexuality provides a sense of self-worth when sexual understanding is positive.

Gender and Human Sexuality

Gender - is a social concept on how men and women should think, feel, and act. It refers to
femininity or masculinity of a person’s role and behavior as defined by society. It is a term that refers
to social or cultural distinctions associated with being male, female, or intersex. It does not exist
naturally because it was generally regarded as a social construct where the concept is created by
cultural and societal norms.
Human sexuality - is the quality of being male or female. It is the way in which we experience
and express ourselves as sexual beings. (Department of Education,2013)

The following are the key terms related to gender and sexuality:
Sex- is the biological basis of being a male or female. It refers to physiological differences found
among male, female and various intersex bodies on the basis of their reproductive organs and
functions. It has two characteristics;
1. Primary Sex Characteristics – those related to the reproductive system

1
2. Secondary Sex Characteristics- those that are not directly related to the reproductive system,
such as breasts and facial hair.
Gender- It is a term that refers to social or cultural distinctions associated with being male, female,
or intersex. It does not exist naturally because it was generally regarded as a social construct where the
concept is created by cultural and societal norms. It is a social view on how men and ladies should
think, feel, and act. It refers to femininity or masculinity of an individual’s role and behavior.
Gender Equality - grants man and woman equal enjoyment of human rights.
Gender Role - refers to certain roles, characteristics, and expectations of how a person should feel,
think, and act as influenced by parents, peers, and society.
A gender symbol is a way of representing a particular gender identity through unique symbol.

Male Female Female Male

Sexuality - is a basic part of what we do and who we are; it is the way in which we experience and
express ourselves as sexual beings. It is the entire expression of an individual’s self-concept.
According to Greenberg, Bruess and Oswalt (2017), sexuality means many things: feelings about
ourselves, roles we play in the society, and reproduction. It is not limited to how we believe sexually.
It is the total of our physical, emotional and spiritual responses, thoughts and feelings. Sexuality is
more about who we are than about what we do.
Human sexuality is a natural part of life and its concept are learned. There are three
dimensions of human sexuality; biological, psychological and socio-cultural. The interactive
relationship of these dimensions describes individual’s total sexuality.

Three Dimensions of Human Sexuality

There are three dimensions of human sexuality according to Greenberg, Bruess and Oswalt
(2017) in their book Exploring the Dimensions of Human Sexuality and these are the following:
• Biological Dimension involves our physical appearance, especially the development of
physical sexual characteristics; our responses to sexual stimulation; our ability to reproduce or
control fertility; and our growth and development in general.
• Psychological Dimension involves our sense of being and a learned aspect of sexuality. It is
our attitudes and feelings towards ourselves and other people.
• Socio-cultural Dimension is the sum of the cultural and social influences that affect our
thoughts and actions. Sexual identities and experiences are acquired from, influenced and

2
modified by an ever-changing social environment. People acquire and assemble meanings, skills
and values from the people around them.

C. Readings:

Sexuality as an Important Component of One’s Personality

According to the American Psychological Association, personality refers to individual differences
in characteristic patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving. It is how the various parts of a person come
together as a whole. Human Sexuality is part of our overall personality. It is something that is natural and
biological that develops into personality when growing up.

https://bit.ly/3fGuN06

Sexuality is an important component of one’s personality because it helps a person define and
determine who he/she is that can affect his/her future choices and life decisions. It is vital to have a
positive outlook of yourself. Focus on your strengths and improve your weaknesses. If you fully
understand and accept yourself, you will know what you must do to stay healthy.
