Zoos in The Modern World
Zoos are popular places for people to visit and learn about different animals,
birds and reptiles from all around the world and were created to bring wildlife
closer to us. But zoos can have both, advantages and disadvantages:
One of the biggest advantages is that it can be an educational activity you
can enjoy with your family or friends. They give us an insight of all different
species and their behavior. Most zoos usually have information describing the
animal, their history and interesting facts about them. Also, learning about animals
helps create awareness about their endangerment in the wild.
Another advantage is conservation. Zoos are helping animal population by
breeding captive species so they never go extinct. They also ensure the animals are
safe and get all the nutrition necessary for them to live a long and healthy life and
they are in no danger of being killed by other animals or hunters. Some examples
of endangered animals are: Giant Pandas, Tigers, Orangutans and Asian Elephants.
On the other hand, zoos have disadvantages too. Firstly, the animals are held
in captivity and live in an unnatural habitat. While some zoos take really good care
of them, some keep animals in very bad conditions just to make profit.
Another major problem is that animals are deprived from developing their
survival skills. Many of the wild animals in zoos are unable to survive if they are
released because they may have lost their ability to hunt and fight for food.
In my opinion, I believe that, in the modern world, zoos are helpful and
beneficial for educational purposes and for protecting endangered species, but they
should provide the best conditions and safety for the animals living there.
Finally, I don’t consider putting animals in cages to be the best solution for
protecting them from extinction.
