Products in this manual are referred to by their trade names. In most, if not all
cases, these designations are claimed as trademarks or registered trademarks of
their respective companies.

Warning
This equipment generates, uses, and can radiate radio frequency energy, and if
not installed and used in accordance with the instructions in this manual, it may
cause interference to radio communication. This equipment has been tested and
found to comply with the limits of a Class A computing device pursuant to
Subpart J of part 15 of FCC rules, which are designed to provide reasonable
protection against such interference when operated in a commercial
environment. Operation of this equipment in a residential area is likely to cause
interference. In which case, the user at his/her own expense will be required to
take whatever measures may be required to correct the interference.
The plotter must be earthed (grounded) via a three-wire power cable to a
dual-pole grounded power outlet with a maximum 16 Amp protection. Your
electrical installation must comply with the standards defined by the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC standard 950) and with the
current national standards.
If your plotter is connected to an “IT” power system (in which the neutral is
NOT considered to be at ground potential) the plotter must be protected by a
bi-pole circuit breaker which will cut both the active and neutral lines, in the
event of an electrical problem.
Ensure that the power outlet is close to the plotter and that the area around the
plotter is unobstructed, to allow access to the power switch.

Finding a location

General considerations
■ choose a stable, clean environment
- temperature between 5 - 35° C
- relative humidity between 10% - 90% RH non-condensing
- away from direct sunlight
- no rapid temperature or humidity changes

■ allow sufficient space around the front and back of the plotter to allow easy
operator access and unrestricted media travel during plotting
■ avoid placing the plotter directly in the path of a fan or vent as a high air flow
interferes with the ink flow of the inkjet cartridge
■ keep cables out of the media path

Using the pedestal

Place the pedestal on an even, stable floor surface

Transporting the plotter

Keep the box and packing materials the plotter is delivered in so that you can
repack the plotter to transport it safely.

Note: See chapter 9, ‘Routine upkeep’for instructions on transporting the plotter.

mode is selected, the roll led on the control panel is on.

Using roll media and automatic cut

When you are using roll mode you can set the 5200 plotter to automatically cut
off finished plots from the roll.

Auto cut on In this mode, the plotter can work unattended with roll media. The
plotter automatically cuts off the finished plot and loads a length of media for
the next plot. The cut plots are collected in the collection basket.

Auto cut off In this mode, the plotter prints a dotted line to mark the end of
each plot and then loads the next length of media and prints the next plot. The
plots can later be separated along the cut line whenever convenient.

Media types
The Océ 5200 inkjet plotters use roll and cut sheet media. The following Océ
media has been thoroughly tested by Océ to give you the best results from your
5200 inkjet plotter.

Standard paper is an inexpensive media suitable for a number of

applications. It is especially recommended for check plots and line drawings.
2
Premium grade paper 90 g/m is a coated paper recommended for solid fills
and presentation drawings. It provides excellent contrast and vivid colors.
2
Premium grade paper 120 g/m is a heavyweight coated paper that is
particularly recommended for presentation drawings and mapping purposes. It
provides excellent stability and handles well.
2
Tracing paper 90 g/m gives high contrast and excellent Diazo copies. It is,
however, dimensionally unstable and therefore not recommended for
archiving. It is recommended for monochrome and color line drawings. For
plots containing a lot of solid fills, we recommend using matt film.

Single matt film is a durable, translucent, polyester film which has one side
covered with a special inkjet coating. It offers good dimensional stability and
Diazo copying capability. Matt polyester film is recommended for final
drawings, for archiving, for presentation, for color line drawings and for
monochrome area fills.

Double matt film has the same qualities and recommendations as single matt
film but also has a special inkjet coating on the front and a drafting layer on the
back.

Clear film is a polyester film recommended for GIS and overlay applications.

White glossy film is a polyester film with a white glossy surface. It is suitable
for posters and point of purchase displays.

Other media
Other media is available in the Océ range. However, certain media, in
particular in the Display range, cannot be used with the automatic cutter on the

5200 plotters. Contact your Océ Supplies service for full details on the range
of media available and its suitability for the 5200 plotters.

Note: We do not recommend archiving color plots for very long periods due to
the dye-base ink used in the cartridges.

Storing and handling recommendations
Temperature & Humidity Changes in humidity cause paper media to expand or
contract due to the amount of moisture in the air. Media stored in one
environment and then moved to another may cause problems when plotting
because the media did not have time to adjust to the new environment.

Take the following precautions to avoid problems:

■ store the media near the plotter if possible

■ take media out of the packaging and allow it to adjust to the same
environment as the plotter for a minimum of two days
■ air conditioning or humidity control is highly recommended if you have a
high humidity level
■ use film media if dimensional stability is very important

Heat & Light All media are sensitive to extreme heat and ultraviolet light and
therefore should not be exposed to strong sunlight. Store away from light in a
dark room or cupboard.

Dirt & Fingerprints The plot quality of media, and especially film media, is
degraded by perspiration, fingerprints and dirt. If necessary, wear cotton
gloves to manipulate the rolls or sheets.

Media and Cartridges 55

Cartridges
The 5200 plotter uses four Océ disposable inkjet cartridges. Cartridges are
available in four colors: black, cyan, magenta and yellow. See page 153 for the
order numbers of the cartridges or contact your local Océ supplies
representative.

Changing from color to monochrome printing

You can use the 5200 as a monochrome or color printer by changing the color
mode on the plotter control panel.
Printing color plots. To print color plots, install a set of four cartridges, black,
cyan, magenta and yellow, in the appropriate positions and set the Color Mode
on the plotter control panel to Full Color. To print out color drawings, the
plotter uses all four color cartridges.
Printing monochrome plots. To print monochrome plots, install a set of four
cartridges, black, cyan, magenta and yellow, in the appropriate positions and
set the Color Mode on the plotter control panel to Monochrome. To print out
monochrome drawings, the plotter uses ink from the black cartridge only.
For high speed monochrome plotting, you
can replace the cyan cartridge with a
second black cartridge and store the cyan
cartridge in the cartridge storage box.
You can only change the cartridge
combination type installed on the plotter
when the plotter is idle (i.e. when the
plotter is not printing and the cartridge
carriage is in the purge station).
Note: If you change the cartridge
combination in the middle of printing out
a plot or when there is a plot waiting in the
buffer, the plotter will display the message
CARTRIDGE ERROR and will not continue
until you install the same cartridge type
combination the plotter was already
using.

Monitoring ink levels
The Océ 5200 measures the amount of ink left in each of the cartridges
installed on the plotter before starting a new plot and displays the following
messages on the control panel display:
INK LOW informs you that the cartridge will need changing soon. When this
message is displayed, the error led on the control panel flashes and a buzzer
sounds.
OUT OF INK informs you that the cartridge is empty. The plotter will not print
until the empty cartridge has been replaced.

Media saver
Media Saver has two options, Autoposition and Nesting.
Note: Media Saver can only be used with roll media. When Cut Sheet mode is
selected, the Media Saver menu is hidden.
Media saver can only be used with vector files.

Nesting
Nesting arranges small drawings (A3, A4 for example) side by side across the
media to optimize the usage of roll media. Plots coming from the computer are
stored in wait files on the plotter according to their size. For example, if MEDIA
FORMAT is set to ISO there are three separate wait files: one for A4 format
drawings, one for A3 format drawings and one for A2 format drawings. When
a wait file is full, the drawings are printed across the full width of the media.
The number of drawings that can be added to a wait file depends on:
■ the MEDIA FORMAT selected (ISO, ANSI, ARCHITECT)
■ the width of the roll of media loaded on the plotter
■ the size of the drawing
■ the orientation of the drawing
Note: The A4 and A3 wait files may be merged to plot two A4 and one A3 plots
together.
If the plot is larger than A2 it will not be stored in a wait file, but will be plotted
normally. If plots are not ISO, ANSI or ARCHITECT standard sizes, the next
larger format will be used.

This printout shows the range of colors the Océ 5200 can print. It consists of
256 color rectangles numbered 0 to 255. Use this printout to choose the colors
you wish to set the pens to.

If the pen color of a pen number is set to 55, for example, all lines printed with
this pen number will be printed with the same color as the palette’s rectangle
with the number 55.

■ If HP-GL/2 pen priority is set to SETUP, the color palette is printed with the
colors which have been set for each pen. Use this printout if you want to
know how the plotter pens have been configured.

Chapter 7
Plot data formats

The 5200 inkjet plotters recognize and interpret plot files in the
following formats:
BGL, VDF, HP-GL, HP-GL/2, HP-RTL, CalComp 906/907/951,
CALS, TIFF and PostScript (option).
This chapter addresses users with a good technical knowledge in plotter
operation.

81
Automatic language sensing
Automatic language sensing enables the plotter to switch between different
formats when you are working in a multi-format environment, where different
plotter drivers are being used.

The plotter automatically recognizes the host data language and uses the 5200
plotter parameters necessary for that plot data.

When using automatic language sensing, you must take the following points
into consideration:

■ every plot data file must terminate with an end of plot instruction.
■ if you use HP-GL data format, all HP-GL instructions which modify the
protocol (set handshake, etc.) must not to be used when Automatic mode is
selected.

If your plot is not recognized correctly, send it again after making sure you
have selected the appropriate data format on the control panel or in a remote
configuration file.

Selecting HP-GL or HP-GL/2 command set
■ When HP-GL data format mode is selected (in manual or automatic mode)
the standard HP-GL command set is activated.
■ The BP command is mandatory, to switch the format interpretation from
HP-GL to HP-GL/2 mode. Without this command, the plot results will be
unpredictable. You may use the following to correctly initialize an HP-GL/2 file:

a.ESC%-1BBPIN;..... or,

b.BPIN;.....

■ You can select HP-GL/2 format from the control panel under SELECT
FORMAT.
■ You can use a Remote Configuration File command to select HP-GL/2
format, which gives the cleanest start-up on HP-GL/2.
■ The PG command is mandatory to properly close the HP-GL/2 file. Without
this command, the plot results will be unpredictable and the plotter may hang if
the next incoming file is also HP-GL/2. You may use the following to correctly
close an HP-GL/2 file:

a.PUSP0PG;or,

b.PUSP0PGRP;(This will plot one additional copy of the file.)

HP-RTL comments
HP-RTL is a subset of HP-GL/2. Hence, all HP-RTL plot data files must start
with ESC%-1BBPIN; or BPIN;

To use HP-RTL, SELECT FORMAT should be set to AUTO or HP-GL/2 on

the plotter control panel, or HP-GL/2 must be selected via a remote
configuration file.

HP-RTL plot data files must close with ESC%0B; PG; which will switch the
plotter back to HP-GL/2 format mode. Without this command, the plot results
will be unpredictable and the plotter may hang.

End of plot time-out
A plot file normally ends with an instruction which tells the plotter that the file
is finished. However, some plot data files written for earlier plotters do not
have an end of plot instruction. In this case, the plot is considered to be
“finished” when the plotter receives no more graphic commands with a delay
allowed for slower computers or complex plot data calculation.

The PLOT TIME-OUT sets the delay (in seconds) after which the plot is
considered finished if the plotter receives no more graphic commands.

Accuracy or smooth area fills?
When using an inkjet plotter, you have to make a compromise. You can either
have smooth area fills or accurately drawn vector lengths. The plotter cannot
do both at the same time because the parameter used to control X alignment
and X accuracy is the same one.
However, the 5200 allows you to calibrate your plotter for both optimal
accuracy (X accuracy) and area fill appearance (X alignment) and save both
settings. You can then choose which factor you wish the plotter to take into
consideration depending on the type of drawings you intend to print.

▼ X accuracy or X alignment
1 Make the adjustments following the instructions in Setting the X alignment
value on page 113 and Setting X accuracy on page 113.
2 Set the band align priority according to the type of drawing you wish to print:

If you want to print image type drawings, set priority to X align. If you want to
print CAD type drawings (architectural, engineering) with accurately drawn
vectors, set priority to X accuracy.
3 Press ENTER.

Note: Plotter accuracy is affected by the type of media used. If you use a
different type of media, you need to redo the X ACCURACY setting.

X alignment
This adjustment is used to reduce the white space or overlap which appears
between the horizontal bands printed by the inkjet cartridge. This effect is
visible when plotting area fills. Adjusting the X alignment value improves the
quality of image type drawings.

▼ Adjusting the X alignment
1 Print out the test plot.
The X alignment patterns are numbered -4 to +4. Study the patterns using a
magnifying glass if necessary.
Choose the best pattern (least white space or overlap), note the number and go
to step 2.

3 Press the down arrow key once and use the right and left arrow keys to scroll
to the number you noted. Press ENTER.

The value is stored by the plotter but is only taken into account when band
alignment priority is set to X align.

X accuracy
This option is used to ensure that when a 50 cm vector parallel to the X axis is
requested by the host computer, the length drawn on the page is really 50 cm
long. X accuracy is important when printing CAD type drawings.

▼ Adjusting X accuracy
1 Print out the test plot.
The test plot includes a square border.
2 Measure the right side of the plotted square carefully. Note the length.
This is the X value.
3 Calculate the adjustment to make.
If the X value is greater than 500 mm, you will enter a negative value on the
control panel. If the X value is smaller than 500 mm, you will enter a positive
value on the control panel.
For example, if the right side of the square measures 500.5 mm, you need to
enter a value of -5 on the control panel. You can enter values from -25 to +25
in increments of 1.
4 Scroll to X ACCURACY ADJ. Enter the value you calculated. Press ENTER.

Input buffer
This option enables you to set different memory sizes for the input buffer. The
plotter only has so much memory and the conversion of vector data to raster
data requires a large amount of memory. The memory for the input buffer is
taken away from the plot data processing memory of the plotter.

■ A small buffer allows more free memory for processing a larger number of
vectors.
■ A large buffer allows faster data transfer from the host to free up the host

computer.
Files in the input buffer will be processed and plotted in the same order as they
arrived.

Rendering
Rendering determines how the plotter organizes the pattern of dots on the page
to form shades of gray or colors. There are two options:

Cloud uses a random dot pattern. In this mode you can print with 256 shades
of gray. Cloud is recommended when you are printing drawings with area fills.

Scattered uses a regular, ordered dot pattern. It produces 256 shades of gray.
Scattered is recommended for vector drawings.

Troubleshooting 131
Poor plot quality solutions

White streaks
Problem unwanted white streaks appear at regular intervals in area fills
Cause these white lines may be caused by a mismatch between adjacent
passes of the cartridge heads
Solution adjust the X alignment value ((see page 112))
Cause blocked nozzles on the print heads
Solution clean the cartridge heads to make sure all the nozzles are
functioning correctly ((see page 122))

Ink smearing
Problem ink is smeared on the media
Cause this is caused by the print head contacting the media usually
because the media wrinkles or bubbles during plotting
Solutions allow absorbent media (paper) time to adjust to the same
environment as the plotter before plotting ((see page 55))
use film media
set the print head height to a higher level ((see page 134)).

Parts of plot missing

Problem parts of a drawing are missing
Cause can be due to dirt or buildup of paper residue
Solutions clean the cartridge print heads ((see page 122))
replace the inkjet cartridges
Solutions replot on a different piece of media and ensure that you are using
recommended supplies

132 User’s Manual

Image quality
Problem fuzzy line elements, ragged edges on area fills and poor letter
definition
Cause plotter environment e.g. a fan or exhaust vent causing high air
flow across the plotter
Solutions ensure plotter is in a stable, recommended environment
check plotter calibration - (see page 110)
check that the media type is correctly set on the control panel

Warped media after plotting

Problem media is warped or wavy after plotting, noticeably in places with
dense area fill
Cause media has absorbed a large quantity of ink
Solutions allow enough time for the ink to dry before handling the plot;
most of the warping will disappear when the ink is dry
use film media

Smudging
Problem the printed area is smudged or smeared
Cause components of the inkjet formula can be smeared due to a
reaction with the body oils or perspiration
Solutions allow plots to dry before touching; wear cotton gloves when
handling plots

Troubleshooting 133
Checking cartridge quality
There are three cartridge quality adjustments.

Adjusting the cartridge height

When using certain types of paper media with certain types of drawing, the
media rises up from the platen and comes into contact with the cartridge head.
This is particularly apparent when printing drawings with large area fills and
is due to the absorption of the ink by the paper, causing the paper to crinkle. To
avoid this happening, you can adjust the gap between the cartridge head and
the platen using the cartridge adjustment lever.

1 Press the Cartridge key on the plotter control panel.

The cartridge carriage moves out of the purge station.
2 Open the dust cover.
The cartridge height adjustment lever is located on the cartridge carriage as
shown below.

Adjusting the cartridge height

134 User’s Manual

There are three positions:
Right position This is the normal gap between the platen and the head. Set the
lever to this position when printing line drawings (CAD applications).
Center position. This position slightly increases the gap between the platen
and the head. Set the lever to this position when plotting drawings which
contain polygon fills and graphics (mixed CAD and image).
Left position. This position provides the maximum gap between the platen and
the head. Set the lever to this position when plotting on thick media and when
plotting images.
If the cartridge height lever is not correctly set, plot quality may be affected.
3 Push the lever to the required position. Make sure that it snaps firmly into
place.
4 Lower the dust cover.
5 Press the Cartridge key .
The cartridge height adjustment is complete.

Troubleshooting 135
Adjusting the cartridge angle
Cartridges may differ slightly from batch to batch so that when they are
positioned on the cartridge carriage the angle in relation to the media is not the
same. Since the angle of the cartridge affects how vertical lines are printed, the
Océ 5200 plotter allows you to adjust the cartridge angle for each of the
cartridges installed on the plotter. The adjustment is made on the basis of the
slant test plot.

▼ Procedure checklist
The following list is a summary of the steps to carry out in order to adjust the
cartridge angle. Each step is then described in detail.

1 Print out the Slant Test plot.

2 Examine the quality of the vertical lines printed on the plot for each of the
cartridges installed on the plotter.
3 If necessary, adjust the appropriate angle knob for each cartridge installed on
the plotter.
4 Print out the Slant Test plot again and check the quality.
5 If you are not satisfied with the line quality, make a second angle adjustment.
6 Carry out the manual cartridge registration adjustment procedure described in
‘Adjusting cartridge registration’ on page 140.

▼ Printing out the slant test plot

1 Make sure that media and cartridges are installed on the plotter and that it is
ready to plot.
2 Go to Slant Test on the plotter control panel menu.

The Slant Test plot is printed out as shown in (see figure 44 on page 138).

The slant test plot consists of a group of five vertical lines printed by each of
the cartridges installed on the plotter. If you have installed four color
cartridges, the slant test will have five black lines printed by the black
cartridge, five lines printed by the cyan cartridge and so on.

You can carry out the procedure as many times as necessary until you are
satisfied with the quality of the vertical lines printed by the each of the
cartridges installed on the plotter.

Note: Each time you open the cartridge open/close knob, the angle adjustment
settings for each cartridge are set back to 1 (neutral). We recommend that,
before installing a new cartridge, you note down the settings for each angle
adjustment knob so that you can reset them after installing the new cartridge.

Troubleshooting 139
Adjusting cartridge registration
When you install a new set of cartridges, the Océ 5200 plotter carries out an
automatic adjustment procedure to make sure that the dots laid down by the
different inkjet cartridges are correctly aligned. You can also carry out a
manual adjustment procedure if you require very high quality reproduction.

<BAND ALIGN> ... <MANUAL ADJUST>

3 Press the Enter key. The plotter prints out the manual adjustment plot.

The colors printed on the manual adjustment plot differ according to the colors
of the cartridges installed on the plotter, for example if you have a black, a
cyan, a magenta and a yellow cartridge installed or two black cartridges, one
magenta cartridge and one yellow cartridge.

The manual adjustment plot is made up of fourteen lines of plotted patterns.

Each line consists of nine numbered patterns. Each pattern is made up of a set
of 16 vertical lines or 16 horizontal lines. For each pattern, there are eight lines
printed by the black cartridge installed in socket K and then eight lines printed
by a second cartridge. The reference cartridge is the black cartridge installed
in the K socket. The best pattern is the one where the lines of different colors
are placed most accurately on top of one another. Ideally, there should only
appear to be eight lines in the pattern.

Checksum A method of checking if a block of transmitted data is

correct. The checksum character is attached to a block of
data.

Compression Reduces the file size of raster images by encoding the

data.

CTS Clear to send. Serial interface command signal.

Default settings The settings made in the factory.

Dithering A method of simulating on digital devices the halftone

dots used in traditional printing. On black and white
devices, dithering produces simulated grayscale; on color
devices it provides varying degrees of color intensity.

dpi Dots per inch.

Dump configuration A printout of the current plotter configuration parameters.

146 Océ 5200 User’s Manual

Framing The parity and stop bits necessary for communication over
the serial port.

Grit drum The part of the plotter which moves the media during
plotting.

Handshake An RS-232C communication protocol used to control data

flow between a host computer and a plotter.

Hardware control CTS An RS-232C protocol that uses a positive or negative

voltage applied to a hardwire line (usually CTS) to start or
stop data flow.

Host The source of data sent to the plotter, usually a computer.

Inter character delay A time delay set between each character sent from the
plotter to the host to allow slower computers time to
process one character before receiving the next one.

ISO International Standards Organization which sets standards

for engineering drawings.

HP-GL Hewlett-Packard graphic language, a vector format

designed by Hewlett-Packard.

HP-RTL Hewlett-Packard raster transfer language, a raster format

designed by Hewlett-Packard.

Ink cartridge Supplies the ink to the plotter.

Media Material, such as paper and film, used by the plotter to

create drawing images.

Media sensor An optical sensor on the plotter that detects the presence
of media.

Menu access Access to the plotter control panel menu can be limited to
selected users by passwords. Three access levels are
available.

Origin The 0,0 point of the plot.

Output resolution The number of dots per inch (dpi) that the output device,
such as a plotter, produces.

P1 A scaling point that generally specifies the location of a

plot’s lower left corner when using HP-GL format.

P2 A scaling point that generally specifies the location of a

plot’s upper right corner when using HP-GL format.

147
Parallel port An interface designed to accept a complete byte of
information, including control characters, at the same
time. The parallel port on the 5200 is the Centronics port.

Parity An error checking scheme; parity may be even (even

number of ONE bits), odd (odd number of ONE bits) or
none.

Pixel Short for picture element. A pixel is one dot of a bitmap.

Platen A surface for holding and guiding media while plotting.

Plot A drawing produced by the plotter.

Priming A process which prepares the inkjet cartridge for printing.

Print head The print head on the inkjet cartridge contains very small
nozzles which fire droplets of ink onto media to produce a
plot.

Purge station A place on the plotter where the inkjet cartridge carriage
is stored when not in use and where the cartridge head is
cleaned and primed.

Purging A process which cleans the inkjet cartridge head.

Raster file Also called image or bitmap. A picture composed of

individual dots. Raster images have large data files,
compared to vector files.

Rasterize To break down an image into individual scan lines. Nearly

all modern graphics monitors and printers are raster-based
devices.

RCF A Remote Control Format file has a file header which

contains commands to modify the plot attributes such as
scale factor, pen definitions, number of copies, etc.

Resolution The number of dots per inch (dpi) that the output device,
such as a plotter, produces.

Serial port An interface designed to accept data one bit at a time. For
serial data transmission, the transmission protocol, i.e.
baud rate, byte length, stop bits, parity, etc., must be
defined before communications can be established so that
the plotter can recognize the data it receives from the host.

148 Océ 5200 User’s Manual

Smudging Distorting or smearing of the imaged area due to handling.
Caused by a reaction between the inkjet ink and the body
oils of the person handling the plot.

Step size Aligns the plotter and the application input resolution.

Expanding the plotter memory
The Océ 5200 plotters are delivered with 16 megabytes of memory - RAM -
installed. This memory can be extended to 80 megabytes by installing RAM
extension modules available from Océ. Modules are available in 16 and 32
megabyte modules.

You can have one of the following combinations installed on the plotter:

Memory size SLOT 0 SLOT 1 SLOT 2

16 Mbytes 16 Mbytes
32 Mbytes 16 Mbytes 16 Mbytes
48 Mbytes 16 Mbytes 16 Mbytes 16 Mbytes
48 Mbytes 16 Mbytes 32 Mbytes
64 Mbytes 16 Mbytes 16 Mbytes 32 Mbytes
64 Mbytes 16 Mbytes 32 Mbytes 16 Mbyte
80 Mbytes 16 Mbytes 32 Mbytes 32 Mbytes

The modules can be ordered from Océ and should be installed by suitably
qualified persons. See page 153 for the order numbers.

The larger the plotter memory, the quicker the data can be processed on the
plotter, and the quicker your computer can be freed for other tasks. The
memory you need depends on the type of drawings you plot.

157
Handshake protocols

Serial protocols
Two types of computer-to-plotter handshaking (and their variants) are
available on the 5200 plotters:
■ Hardwire

■ XON/XOFF

According to the selected emulation, handshake protocols can be set either

through the software or the control panel.

When invoking a handshake protocol manually, the plotter offers you the
following character transmission handshaking selection:
■ CTS2 for hardwire handshaking

■ XON4 for XON/OFF software handshaking

Your host or software documentation should tell you which handshaking is

needed.

XON4: The plotter sends XON when its buffer has enough room to receive
character data. It sends an XOFF character to the computer when its buffer is
almost full, indicating that the computer should stop sending characters.

CTS2 Whenever the plotter’s buffer has enough room to accept characters, it
activates the CTS signal. It then deactivates the signal when its buffer is full.

Note: Hardwire (Hardware) handshaking is enabled using the HP-GL ESC.P3

instruction. Xon/Xoff handshaking is enabled via the software using the
ESC.P1 HP-GL instruction.

Centronics protocol
Centronics uses hardwire handshaking. The computer sends a STROBE signal
to move each byte of data into the plotter, at which time the plotter signals
BUSY. When the transfer is complete, the plotter sends ACKNOWLEDGE to
the computer and another cycle can begin.

158 Océ 5200 User’s Manual

Serial port configuration
The RS-232C serial port is located at the back of the plotter. It is a mini DIN 8
pin female connector (For plotter in DCE - Data Communications Equipment).
However it accepts DTE (Data Terminal Equipment) signals when DTE is
selected under the PORT submenu of the Connections Menu.

The following diagrams describe the serial port pin assignment on the 5200.

Plotter pin number Signal direction Name of the signal

EPA ENERGY STAR®
Océ-Technologies B.V. has joined the ENERGY STAR® Program of the United
States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The purpose of the EENERGY
STAR® Program is to promote the manufacturing and marketing of
energy-efficient equipment in order to reduce combustion-related pollution.

As an ENERGY STAR® Partner, Océ-Technologies B.V. has determined that this

copier meets the ENERGY STAR® guidelines for energy efficiency.

The EPA ENERGY STAR®® Criteria for copiers have the following features:

auto-off The use of the auto-off feature offers economic and environmental
benefits. The copier is shipped with the auto-off default time set to ✖ minutes,
which means that the copier automatically switches itself off ✖ minutes after
the last copy is made1. The auto-off default time can be adjusted by the key
operator to between ✖ and ✖ minutes. We recommend that you determine the
appropriate default time for your work pattern by changing the setting in
increments of ✖ minutes and testing each setting for at least a week. Only if an
auto-off default time of ✖ minutes still causes you considerable inconvenience,
due to your particular usage pattern, should you request the Océ service
technician to disable the auto-off feature.

low-power mode In the low-power mode, the power consumption of certain

functions is automatically reduced to save energy. The copier enters low power
mode ✖ minutes after the last copy is made1.. This default time can be adjusted
by the key operator to between ✖ and ✖ minutes. The low power mode
recovery time is less than ✖ seconds, after which copying can be resumed.

automatic duplex mode Using both sides of paper reduces paper costs,
national energy consumption and the amount of paper in the waste disposal
process. You are encouraged to duplex (make double-sided copies) as often as
feasible or to choose double-sided copying as the default setting.

Safety information 177

recycled paper The use of recycled paper also benefits the environment. This
copier is designed to use recycled copier paper. Product literature about
recommended types of recycled copier paper can be obtained from your local
Océ organization, or from Océ Headquarters (Océ-TechnologiesB.V.) in
Venlo, the Netherlands.
1Forpower consumption data: see the Product Safety Data Sheet in this
appendix.

ENERGY STAR® is a U.S. registered mark.
